Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County KSTS → Shelter Cove 0Q5
In the end, I had to hurry a bit as the runway in Shelter Cove isn’t lit, and daylight was running out.

I used SteamVR with ALVR here on Bazzite linux but WiVRn with the latest XR-izer (edit: literally the most recent commit) finally plays the core set of games I like to play right now and it has passthrough capability by default so I can have my WayVR windows floating in real space. PLUS, almost biggest deal, is it runs like a dream. I maxed out my settings, resolution and FPS and MSFS2024 looks and feels GORGEOUS.
(I know all those things might sound made up but they're not lol)
One tip if on Fedora/Arch or similar is to install via the package manager for now because right now the flatpak has an outdated Mesa version included that causes graphical issues.

Sacramento Executive KSAC → Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County KSTS
The Beechcraft King Air 350i that ships with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is broken. This was my first and last flight with this particular aircraft.
I had to skip several steps in the startup checklist because there are simply no instruments to monitor the engines.
Also missing: the ability to add departure, arrival, and approach procedures to the flight plan.
So, it ended up being mostly a VFR flight, which, fortunately, worked out fine thanks to the excellent weather.
The King Air 350i in MSFS 2020 is the significantly better version.
This leg’s highlights? San Francisco’s skyline, the Bay’s iconic bridges, the rugged beauty of Point Reyes, and a breathtaking sunset.

it's so fucking cool that i found a helicopter for microsoft flight sim 2024 that is both compatible with VR stick control (so i can fly with 100% realistic body position) and has a livery for our local TV helicopter (that got sold off, sadly). seemingly small, tedious things to the developer like making a bunch of liveries of real-life helicopters can be a huge thing for users like me.
my dad was in TV and he knew the guy who flew this helicopter really well, and was always amazed at his skill. he would have enjoyed this at least as much as I do.
helicopter is CowanSim 206L3. it seems basically all of CowanSim's helicopters are fully VR capable. happy to give out recommendations, i bought all of cowansim's helicopters lol - they were on sale on the official marketplace as of yesterday.

i've been messing with a little script someone else wrote that creates a virtual xbox 360 controller where the X and Y joystick are controlled by a mouse. i modified it so you can control both virtual sticks with 2 different mice and left and right click of the first mouse also map to A and B. it handles relative values from devices as well as absolute values (such as what DualShock controllers use). it's been awesome on #microslop flight sim 2020, i use my smartwatch to control the collective and throttles in a natural way and a PS4 controller attached to a board which is itself taped to a big bowl to control rudder/tail rotor.
i ordered some actual flight pedals but it's good i still worked on this after ordering because the seller on ali might be doing something fucky, they told me the pedal isn't made anymore and to cancel the order. i'm not gonna do anything and see what happens.
repo if interested: https://github.com/tyzbit/msfs_mouse_yoke
(this code is not high quality, nor is it really intended to be right now)

VR controllers in microsoft flight simulator 2020 are rough (most helicopters do not support them, moving knobs and dials often require non-intuitive movements*). i like helicopters so i have been working on some way to control the collective (a stick that moves kind of like an emergency brake). i've looked at controllers, microcontrollers, tons of software, all of it with downsides like taking up physical space, cost, possible incompatibility with bazzite
well i remembered yesterday i have WearMouse, an app for smartwatches to pair to devices and control a mouse and it's incredible. i mapped the Y axis of the mouse to the collective and moving my arm translates to almost exact movements of the collective. i say almost because in typical microsoft flight sim fashion, there's a forced deadzone and movement is limited to one speed (so whipping my arm up barely moves the collective).
luckily a kind person made https://github.com/matiaspedelhez/msfs_mouse_yoke which directly translates mouse movements to a virtual gamepad axis (which feature more functionality for tweaks in microsoft flight sim) and now it's perfect.
before, i had a lot of trouble maintaining a hover near the ground because i'd always have too much or too little collective. immediately after switching to this, i'm landing delicately and purposefully. i still need to get some real pedals for the tail rotor because i want realism in a practical package and a thumbstick on the quest controller isn't realistic enough, but i feel so much more immersed and accurate.
one day, hopefully, i'll get my vive ultimate trackers working in bazzite.
* for reference, the two helicopters in 2020 I found that fully support VR controllers are the Guimbal G2 and the Chinook (that I think is a bonus from buying 2024). i checked 2024 premium deluxe and the list was:
Robinson R66 Bell UH-1H Guimbal G2 Airbus H125and possibly the one that looks like a biblically accurate quadcopter angel drone, but i don't care about that one.

Doing a happy dance!!
I've just completed a flight in an Airbus A380 From Changi in Singapore to Sydney Australia
A few things needed quick action to avoid problems, but managed a full ILS capture and smooth landing 😀

So I wanted to give #msfs2024 another try. I successfully created xbox live account beforehand and I made sure it works.
Couple of minutes ago I bought the game, installed it, and went to log in:
Boom #1: Your account is locked.
Ok this isn't that bad, I can use SMS verification to unlock it...
Boom #2: Try another verification method. This verification method isn't working right now.
Fine, lets see what another method would involve...
Boom #3: It involves *drumroll* LOGGING IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT!
This is insane. Please Microsoft, I just want to play your game.. I've now bought it twice, and will have to refund again...
