Spotted on approach to Portland International Airport #KPDX: US Navy Blue Angels arriving from Anchorage, Alaska. They will be based at the Portland Air National Guard Base at PDX while performing at the Oregon Int'l Airshow in McMinnville #KMMV this Fri/Sat/Sun. Continuing my thread on comings & goings of the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar, today I got pictures of a green #UnpaintedAirplane 737 MAX9 flying as BOE974 on its first flight out of the Boeing 737 factory in Renton #KRNT. The pre-painted rudder indicates this plane will go to United Airlines. ADS-B telemetry indicated it will be N27474. Over the weekend, I got a look at the construction site at PDX Airport for Alaska Airlines' upcoming widebody maintenance hangar, which will be wide enough for 2x787/A330 or 3x737/A321. Some city permits are still under review. So other than some equipment for clearing the property, they're waiting on approval to begin construction. Since Alaska acquired its widebody fleet from Hawaiian, their only current widebody hangar is in Honolulu. #Alaska787 #KPDX #aviation #avgeek #business #PNW

Video: brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner arriving at #KPDX from #KCHS factory today for paint. The vertical stabilizer, not just rudder, is already partly painted with flower petals of the China Airlines (Taiwan) livery. Avgeeks following 787 production determined this is Line Number 1314 (LN1314). It flew as BOE759. PDX was reporting 8mi visibility in smoke at the time. One just like this came in May and was at the Boeing Portland Paint Hangar for 15 days. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek

Trying to figure out what's going on with a flight diverting to PDX. @JetTip alerted on American 1355, an Airbus A321neo scheduled Dallas #KDFW - Anchorage #PANC, diverting to Portland #KPDX. After flying around some thunderstorms in Colorado, it changed to diverting to Portland, and descended to 12,000ft. In a depressurization, they'd go to 10,000ft. Here are pictures of Boeing 777-9 prototype #2 N779XX flying as BOE002 on its second pass by PDX on a test flight today, doing a touch & go. I'm guessing this probably had an FAA inspector/pilot at the controls due to the late stage of type certification flight testing in progress. This time there was no way for @JetTip to alert me because its flight plan is BFI-BFI. Luckily, I spotted it coming on the Boeing test flights display on my wall monitor at home. #KPDX #B779 #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Portland #KPDX seems to be the Pacific Northwest's universal flight diversion safe spot lately. Yesterday when thunderstorms popped up in Seattle #KSEA briefly blocking the final approach course, 8 flights diverted to PDX, as well as smaller numbers to Spokane, Bellingham and Pasco. Today, forest fire smoke has dropped Medford #KMFR to IFR conditions. Interesting diversion back to PDX by brand-new Horizon E175 (regional jet) N670QX. The plane did its delivery ferry flight from the Embraer factory in São Paulo, Brazil to Horizon's maintenance base at PDX on Friday. It started revenue flights Tuesday. Today when @JetTip alerted me to the diversion, the tail number looked familiar. Since it's scheduled to retry the flight to Billings MT (BIL), it wasn't a maintenance issue, at least nothing big. BOE446 did eventually make it to Portland today, after repairs at BFI for whatever malfunction caused the Boeing test pilots to divert 2 days ago on the plane's first flight out of the Renton factory. It will be painted with registration C-GYYS and WestJet🇨🇦 livery. Other avgeeks looked up this 737 MAX8 is line number LN9714.
