The #avgeek rumor mill has an explanation why Spokane #KGEG saw Boeing 777-9 prototype #3 N779XY show up several times from Seattle Boeing Field #KBFI last week. Here are pictures of Boeing 777-9 prototype #2 N779XX flying as BOE002 on its second pass by PDX on a test flight today, doing a touch & go. I'm guessing this probably had an FAA inspector/pilot at the controls due to the late stage of type certification flight testing in progress. This time there was no way for @JetTip to alert me because its flight plan is BFI-BFI. We had a surprise visit in Portland from Boeing 777-9 prototype #2 N779XX flying as BOE002 (radio callsign "Boeing Zero Zero Two Heavy"). It did a missed approach and then came back for a touch and go, both on Runway 28R. Pics from the first pass here, second pass next post. Actually, 3 of the 4 777-9 prototypes flew today. Later N779XX as BOE002 flew to Montana and back (duration 6 hours), apparently looking for ice and turbulence for FAA certification testing. The flight track included a vertical profile which showed the 777-9 prototype only descended to 10,000ft while over Minnesota. So why did they fly to Minnesota for freezing precipitation when they can also find that in the Pacific Northwest? Though they can find icing conditions at 10,000ft in Washington State, there's also terrain and terrain-related turbulence. Here's a flight track with a hint about #Boeing 777-9 flight testing progress. In order to be "approved for flight into known icing" the Boeing test pilots have to hunt for known icing🥶❄ conditions and fly in it for hours. They flew from a flight test base in Moses Lake WA #KMWH to Minnesota last Tuesday, and returned to MWH.
