  1. the #beech trees are at altutude of about 400m here until 1100m. Below that zone the beech forest becomes oak forest. In the forest mainly Quercus frainetto (hongarian or italian oak) and Quercus ilex (holm oak or in Dutch stone oak) and Arbutus unedo

  2. we are not ready yet scouting for places with beech trees. So perhaps we will find some individual trees with all characteristics of Fagus orientalis. But most research papers indicate the species proper (not hybridized) is only found more north east on the border of Greece and Bulgaria.

  3. ok, sowe are in #greece looking for fagus orientalis or fagus x taurica, the crossbreed between Fagus sylvestris (the European beech) and Fagus orientalis (the eastern beech)
We are in olympiada eastern of Thessaloniki
We found Fagus x Taurica so far for sure.
The hallmark of orientalis is leaves with more than 9 leaf veins, spoonshaped, a dark green shiny upper side, and the female flowers with somewhat broadened "hairs" on the base of the flower strcuture that later becomes the strcuture surrounding the beech nuts

  4. This path among beech trees creates an unexpected frame for art. Those exposed roots are a sculpture you can walk on — the roots of a fallen beech tree, cast in bronze and reintegrated into the path through the wood.

  5. The European Beech(Fagus sylvatica) is a large tree native to much of Europe. It is long-lived, with a lifespan of 150–200 years, though some individuals can live over 300 years. It is a keystone species, having a disproportionately large effect on its surrounding ecosystem.

  6. 200 isn't really a #milestone (wouldn't that be 1000?), but not a bad number of reads for a #preprint of a paper deemed not fit for publication.

Currently processing the data to please the editor (more P.R.Chinese samples), nothing unexpected came up but all analyses will have to be updated and streamlined.
So enjoy the original, the final product will have more tips but not more content 😅
