It is my first summer here so I don't know if weeks of >95F weather is normal for the Rogue Valley, but: It is very very hot, and my tomatoes are darn unhappy about it.

I repurposed these ugly tarps from a former chicken yard to shade the temporary garden. Planning for shade-cloth infrastructure now in the permanent garden as well. 😬

#Wildfire about 35 miles away in #SouthernOregon. Smoke has filled the #RogueValley so we’re staying inside and have our two air purifiers on high. It’s bad. 1,400 wild land and structure defense firefighters at our ‘fire camp’. We’ve got one very large air tanker (VLAT), 3 LATs, and multiple helicopters attacking from the air, and dozers on the ground. Fire’s at 13,000 acres with only 5% containment. New spot fires at the perimeter keep popping up and demanding resources. This is gonna be a long fire fight. What’s really disturbing is how this has become our new normal in #Oregon. We’ve been here long enough to know it wasn’t always this way. Now, every summer is full of lightning- and human-caused wildfires - and smoke, so much nasty smoke. I read that before #ClimateChange, lightening would strike in moist, well-hydrated forests that resisted fire. But now, with #GlobalWarming and #drought our forests are dry tinderboxes, stripped of their former natural resistance. #environment #ClimateCrisis #fire

Smoke from many regional #Wildfires is choking Southern Oregon’s #RogueValley - it’s not safe to go outside without a mask at this point. 😷 Have to water my medicinal herbs today, so I’ll be masked up to avoid breathing noxious particulates. I thought we might have avoided this when August was relatively free of serious air pollution, BUT NO‼️September is proving to be full of smoke. Rain predicted next week, maybe that will ease things a bit. 🌨️

Landing in Medford a week ago, my plane flew by Upper Table Rock (a local lava plateau) rising from the morning fog that fills the #RogueValley in late fall. Hard to capture but impossible to forget!

I was up early this morning, before sunrise. El Ranchito (aka our hobby farm) was above the clouds filling the #RogueValley looking down. It’s a great look that I love. Treetops penetrating the low-lying clouds looking like small island archipelagos. Just so sweet. Shooting photos is one method I use to deal with chronic issues that might otherwise be preoccupying. #SouthernOregon has a number of beautiful spots, we overlook a very pretty valley and in the distance, the convergence of the Siskiyou and Cascade Mt. ranges (very rare indeed when two mountain ranges join in a summit like we have).

Cabernet grapes on the vine on our grape arbor in the deer fenced garden. We made wine for years with our small vineyard, but I no longer drink alcohol and my partner is content to buy from one of our many local wineries. So now, we have just the arbor left and most of that goes to our many birds, including our small flock of chickens. #Garden #GrapesOnTheVine #SouthernOregon #RogueValley

Damn. My “Watch Duty” app is going nuts with notifications today. There are like 50 or more #Wildfires burning around us on almost all sides. Still well away from the populated #RogueValley center along the I-5, but filling the air with smoke and keeping the tankers flying continuous loops (until the visibility stops them). Tanker base is just ten minutes from me, so we hear them overhead. I hope we get some significant moisture (and no more lightening) from the remnants of TS Hillary. Some of these fires gonna burn til October rains. #Drought #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #WatchDuty

We’re clipping two or three bundles a day from our Lavender hedge, slowly harvesting to ensure plenty is left for the many bubble bees that hang out on the flowers. So cute, they regularly nap hanging on to a flower. Never, ever been stung and we walk by this hedge multiple times/day. We love our pollinators and keep our garden full of flowers they prefer. The Tansy is next (second pic). The bundles hang upside down against our large kitchen/diner window until dry, then the actual flower bits go into sachets for our linen and my T-shirt drawers. #garden #Gardening #Flowers #Lavender #pollinators #SouthernOregon #RogueValley
