It has the potential to break the two-party stranglehold, thus forcing politicians of all stripes to listen more carefully to voters and work harder at serving the public, rather than simply trying to be the lesser of two evils.

There aren't that many nations using RCV because most skip to a better proportional system, but I can't see any reason to believe RCV wouldn't be a huge improvement over the current 2 centuries of duopoly control.

Bei parteiischen #Personenwahlen ist das sinnvoll, aber #Kompromiss⁠e bei Sachfragen werden nicht dadurch schlechter, dass sie niemand von vornherein will. Für den Zweck gibts #Condorcetmethoden, die auf dem #Stimmzettel wie #IRV funktionieren (Alternativen nach Präferenz mittels Nummerierung o. ⁠Ä. sortieren), wo aber bei der Auszählung der direkte Vergleich mit allen anderen Alternativen zählt. Was gegenüber allen anderen Alternativen von einer #Mehrheit höher platziert wird, gewinnt. [8/13]

Wenn es eh schriftlich sein muss, könnte man da wirklich gleich in einer einzigen Runde abstimmen; bei künftig nur 630 Stimmzetteln ist das auch nicht so furchtbar kompliziert. Praktische Verwendung im #Bundestag würde auch bestehende Zweifel bei der #Unmittelbarkeit und #Zählwertgleichheit von #IRV entkräften. Allerdings ist bei Sachfragen auch IRV suboptimal. Außer bei #Wahlen kennt die bisherige #Geschäftsordnung einen Sonderfall, wenn insbesondere über den Sitz von #Bundesbehörde⁠n abzustimmen ist. Da gibts wie teils bei Wahlen gegebenenfalls eine 2er-#Stichwahl. Der Entwurf schreibt das bisher ungeregelte normale Verfahren genauer fest und führt alternativ ein Mehrrundenverfahren ein. Das ist also praktisch #IRV in künstlich verkomplizierter Form ohne »instant«. Man nennt es auch #Olympiaverfahren, weil Austragungsorte so bestimmt werden. [6/13]

In countries with a #Parliamentary form of gov't, they have no primaries, no two-party system, no spoilers and elections take weeks instead of years.

We can do the same thing here simply by switching to "#RankedChoiceVoting" (#RCV #IRV).

Vorgestern war der Stichtag zum #PopularVote-Staatsvertrag. Die Vertragsstaaten haben nur 209 von 538 #Wahlmänner⁠n kontrolliert, also wird er zur #Präsidentschaftswahl 2024 sicher nicht mehr angewandt. Zuletzt ist im April #Maine beigetreten, was wegen dem dortigen #RankedChoice interessant ist. Beides ist nämlich eigentlich inkompatibel und nicht so klar, wie Präferenzen in Stimmen übersetzt werden sollen. Yes. The benefits of #RCV & #IRV are manifold:

No more two-party system b/c there's no longer a worry about "spoilers".

No more costly lengthy Primaries.

Greatly mitigates the influence of Big Money in politics.

RCV is the closest thing we have to a "panacea" for election reform.

Ranked #voting, also known as #PreferentialVoting or instant-runoff voting (#IRV), is how they do it here in the #EU.

I'm an #Irish citizen now (still holding on to my #US citizenship and voting #Democrat though). Yesterday=first time I voted using this system.

Better-designed system, imho. Sharing so fellow #American #voters can get a sense of how this works. I wish it were everywhere in #USA. Apparently, it's only shown up in limited areas.

I don't know how you can say that. #IRV is the closest thing to a panacea when it comes to fixing our election system. It:

1) Ends the 2-Party system.

2) No more spoilers.

3) It *greatly* mitigates the influence of #BigMoney in politics thanks to shorter & less intense campaigns.

4) Elections become less "confrontational" (fewer attack ads) as candidates strive to be voter's *second* choice as well as first. #InstantRunoffVoting #RCV

The quickest/easiest way to "get the money out of politics" is to simply adopt #IRV #InstantRunoffVoting for ALL elections.

This would totally eliminate the most costly part of running for office: "#Primaries" (followed by Runoffs.) No primaries also greatly shortens the time spent running for office, and the time spent by candidates fundraising.
