The Dem establishment used to tell the left to run in the primary and then everybody will just #VoteBlueNoMatterWho in the general. But of course there's now a large contingent of these same corporate funded folks attacking the left after we finally won after doing exactly what they asked for years.
There is another way. Final Five #RankedChoiceVoting. It would end these dumb debates and also remove the power of parties over our elections. They don't want that either.

I desperately want AES to become the next US senator from Michigan, but ultimately I think the system we have is a bad way to figure out who should be in office. Winning a primary tells you very little about who can win a general. It tells you even less about who the electorate think should be elected.
We need Final Five #RankedChoiceVoting.
-
We have a twice elected president as proof that nobody knows what #electable means anymore, yet we still pay attention to the people who claim they do and it's all that matters in primaries.
Winning by appealing to lots of people with different political views makes sense. But now so does energizing people who don't normally vote, with outsider positions or their personality. And why care who is elected if they can't govern?
Stop pretending it's a science and open it up.

Imagine this race with a final five #RankedChoiceVoting general election. The primaries replaced with a "vote once for whoever you want" election. Then the top five go to the general. They'd still be clear about their positions but the animosity would be greatly diminished. The spoiler argument would be gone. It would mostly happen in October instead of now. It would weaken the power of endorsements and money from electeds and PACs.

I love this idea of natural comparisons between #ProportionalRepresentation and non-PR countries around the world, noting that it's almost like having a scientific control group:
* Ireland (proportional representation) vs UK (majoritarian)
* Germany (PR) vs France (majoritarian)
* New Zealand (PR) vs Australia (majoritarian, despite using Instant Runoff Voting)#ElectoralReform #FairVote #FairVoteCanada #canada #InstantRunoffVoting #RankedChoiceVoting

Tell your representatives to support the Fair Choice Act, and support #RankedChoiceVoting

@majorlinux @quinn I'm talking about voting in them. Though running is also important.
The list of challenges is long. We'd better start working.
(My focus is on #RankedChoiceVoting, currently. One issue among many.)

yes the details matter. FFV (final five voting) entails an easy process to get on the ballot and then replacing primaries with a single "vote for any one candidate" election. the top five vote getters then go to a #RankedChoiceVoting general election.
primaries are horrible because of the limited turnout (as you said), concentrated power of money, how they prioritize partisanship and ideology over integrity and public interest etc.
if Maine voters failed, let's ask why.
-
IF NOTHING ELSE, the renewed #Platner controversy shines a huge spotlight on the NEED/BENEFITS of #RankedChoiceVoting / #InstantRunoffVoting. 🤔 #RCV #IRV

hopefully he figures out how impossible this is and then I'd welcome his support for #RankedChoiceVoting everywhere.

"Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland said that he’s never seen this much interest in proportional representation from his colleagues. Representative Don Beyer of Virginia, along with Raskin and a handful of other legislators, have co-sponsored the Fair Representation Act for almost a decade now. It’s the most complete national solution to end gerrymandering and would create a more proportional House with larger, multimember districts and ranked-choice voting. According to their vision, every district nationwide becomes a swing district, and every delegation would more closely represent the politics and racial demographics of every state. Members who have never wanted to talk about it in the past are now asking Raskin how it works."

these people are pathetic. but parties shouldn't exist. definitely not primaries paid for by taxes.
-
Trump defies the limits of the office more than other presidents, but it is allowed to happen thanks to partisanship and gerrymandering. Presidents are rarely reprimanded by those in Congress of the same party because our current system gives presidents a lot of influence over who their party supports in primaries, and in very red or blue districts and states, that's the only election these people could lose.
Parties were not supposed to matter in the US.

Maine voters turned out in exceptional numbers for the June 9 primary, with some communities running out of ballots and the secretary of state's office delivering extras to Portland, Westbrook, and Kennebunkport.
Election officials are now tabulating ranked-choice results in five races, the ninth time the state has used the system in a statewide contest, with results expected before the Juneteenth holiday on Friday.

For those wondering why they call #RankedChoiceVoting an "instant run-off" if it is going to take #Maine a full week to tell us who won...
MANY #Maine districts use paper ballots. They have to be hand transferred to the central counting center and validated & scanned before the Round 2 & Round 3 (if necessary) tabulations can be conducted. This is a safety measure to prevent manipulation of the tabulation process when using paper ballots. #uspol #uspolitics #elections

@juliehuz #Maine also has #RankedChoiceVoting in general elections. Why is there no talk of #Mills getting on that ballot? She could offer an alternative without being a spoiler. Has her silence these past few weeks, rather than endorsing #Platner, been so she could do just that? Do you know what it would take for her to get on the ballot?

Completely ridiculous. They are cheating. Just like #FascistRepublicans they are gaming the system in their favour and right wing #msm are simply sane washing it all for them.Crazy, undemocratic times we are living through…

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Most state legislatures will *never* pass #RankedChoiceVoting. But do you know what *else* would castrate #USpol ‘party machines’ that virtually *guarantee* re-election of incumbents in #gerrymandered (by the party machines) #Congressional districts?
#PrimaryFromTheCenter #StrategicVoting has a similar impact as RCV but you can do it now in all 50 states!
#Resist intelligently!

The fact that Republicans think ranked choice is a threat to their power, is a really strong endorsement of #RankedchoiceVoting. Maybe the strongest one.
-
It was already near impossible to get fair access to primaries. Now both parties are changing to closed #primaries.
This is why I joined DSA (Democratic #Socialists of Amer), because we run on the Dem ticket.
There's no way in my lifetime the two party system will give up its control - we need #RankedChoiceVoting to make #Congress look more like #Parliament.
Exhaustive article, repeats #poll results saying ~76% of us prefer #compromise over #gridlock.

With all this concern over #GrahamPlatner and Dems in #Maine, I got to wondering what's the point of #RankedChoiceVoting.
They have RCV but use it poorly. They should get rid of partisan primaries and just have an election where the top five vote getters advance to the general RCV election. Maybe one of them is GP but the Dem party wouldn't matter. And his presence wouldn't preclude somebody lots of Dems like.
Our civics sucks to a large degree cause our political system is broken. Media too.
