Also, lobby for Ranked Choice Voting / Instant Runoff Voting (RCV / IRV), and educate folks regarding how it works!

It has the potential to break the two-party stranglehold, thus forcing politicians of all stripes to listen more carefully to voters and work harder at serving the public, rather than simply trying to be the lesser of two evils.

  6. @wslack Exactly. The unfortunate way that #RCV is often described, as if there were actual rounds, makes some vote counters decide they need to report only the top choices at first. But #FairVote knows that the right way would be to report the tally for each permutation when it is known. It is, after all, an #INSTANTrunoff. #RankedChoiceVoting

  16. Our preferential system of voting gives Australians the opportunity to loosen the stifling grip of the two party system while maintaining political stability.

For the most part, we are only given two choices in terms of government, so you should almost never give your first preference to the Coalition or Labor. Put your preferred government (out of those two) second.

You can even put them further down the list, as long as you preference them above the government you want to avoid. The only time this doesn't apply is when you are offered no viable alternatives.

Research the others. See who else might better represent you. Make them number one. We don't have to live in Groundhog Day.

I'm a Green, but this is not just for Greens voters.

  21. Ranked choice voting problem: Alameda County miscounted votes by applying the ranked choice algorithm wrong. It was an edge case affecting only 200 ballots, but it changed the outcome of one race.

  24. @kevinjelliott @jacksantucci ... but #RCV #InstantRunoff results are always better than plurality-winner.

If #RankedChoiceVoting is adopted only in municipal elections, it still creates interest that draws more people to the polls for the other elections on the ballot. And it demonstrates the virtues of voting that way, generating support for applying it to other offices and providing any technological upgrades needed to support it.

  29. And if voters don't have to worry about wasting their votes, they can vote for who they really want to win and not have to worry about who (the conventional wisdom says) has a chance at winning. That worry--and the need to vote strategically--is what dilutes the power of minorities, not requiring the winner to be supported by a majority of voters. The lesson of this article is that #Georgia should adopt #RankedChoiceVoting for #InstantRunoff elections instead of costly second election days.
