  2. @IanStuart @UnassumingKiwiReborn

the #USA is an #FPTP voting system (the #UK is too, but it is also #parliamentary, which lends stability and viability to 3rd parties the #US does not have)

so we are stuck with 2 parties. a 3rd party vote divides the left and #MAGA wins

we can fix it with #RCV, ranked choice voting, then we can vote 3rd party to our heart's content

until then, we have to focus on taking over the #Democrats, which is what #DSA like #Mamdani is doing

    that is the way forward

  3. So, #NiravShah came pretty close to winning the June primary (if there weren't #RCV, he would have won). Though #TroyJackson would be the logical #Progressive choice. The plot thickens...

Democrats Begin to Clash Over Who Replaces Platner Even Before He Exits

#Progressives and #moderates are gearing up for a fight over an as-yet-undecided process in #Maine to name a Senate nominee to replace #GrahamPlatner after a rape accusation. He still wants a say, too.

Excerpt: "A range of candidates are being discussed, with some early attention on those who ran and lost the primary for governor this year. Those Democrats include #TroyJackson, a former president of the Maine Senate; Nirav Shah, a former director of Maine’s public health agency; and #ShennaBellows, Maine’s secretary of state. But some Democrats were concerned about elevating someone who just lost.

"Supporters of Mr. Jackson, who had backed Mr. Platner in the primary, created a Draft Troy website and he filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission for a Senate exploratory committee. Mr. Shah put out a statement that said he had received 'hundreds of encouraging messages,' adding that anyone who ran for the nomination should commit to a televised debate and 'multiple town halls across every corner of the state.' 4. Another town in Maryland passed Ranked Choice Voting just last month, and I just learned that Takoma Park has had it since 2007! That’s at least three municipalities in Maryland. Make it a statewide movement!!

  5. Profile of Mary Peltola, who leads incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) in polls, not only is interesting in itself but illustrates how Alaska's admirable electoral reforms (universal top-4 primary followed by ranked choice voting #RCV in general) help candidates like her who show cross-party appeal.

    Democrats’ Great Alaskan Hope

  6. And don't forget we still have to finish tabulating last week's primaries in Maine!

Nobody won a majority of the votes in 3 primaries, (#DemGov. #GOPGov and #DemDist2), which means voters' second-, third- and even fourth-choice preferences will come into play. As of Friday afternoon, law enforcement had transported paper ballots and digital scans of ballots from nearly all of Maine's 487 towns, cities and territories to a secure location in Augusta. #uspol #uspolitics #elections #RCV

  7. @egall.bsky.social Great question! I think it’s too late for anyone else to get on the ballot, but someone can still “register” as a write-in candidate. And I guess that if anyone has registered as a write-in candidate, there’d be an opportunity for voters to rank their choices. Not sure, though.

    #rcv

  8. So, #MESEN question: now that the primaries are over, is it going to be just Platner and Collins on the ballot in November, or will there be any third party candidates or independents? Asking for #RCV purposes

  9. Both party primary's in #Maine Governor's race will be decided by ranked-choice voting. (or "instant run-off) The candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated, and second choice ballots are distributed among the remaining candidates.

  10. #DemocraticSocialist Overcomes #GOP-Funded Opponent to Advance in #LosAngeles Mayor Race

City Councilmember #NithyaRaman will face off against incumbent Mayor #KarenBass in the November general election.

By Jessica Washington, June 8, 2026

"The surprising and divisive mayoral campaign of right-wing reality TV star #SpencerPratt came to an end on Monday, when Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, claimed her spot on the general election ballot against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.

"The second-place finish for Raman means that in the coming months, Bass will have to grapple with a challenger from her left. The incumbent mayor’s establishment bonafides at once lend her a strong political apparatus and make her the object of voter frustration. Raman, meanwhile, will face an uphill battle against the entrenched Democratic machine, which helped Bass easily secure a first-place finish. The embrace of mail-in voting by Angelenos slowly turned the tide for Raman, who initially trailed Pratt when polls closed last Tuesday."

  11. It will take many elections to know if ranked-choice #elections improves politics. Does #RCV encourage more thoughtful #voting? Does it open the door to candidates who know how to build coalitions? We’ll see. What we DO know is it takes too long to count the votes. Let’s ask Australian officials how they tally RCV results so quickly. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/20

  12. Huge game of #rugby going on right now. Final of the #ProD2 (second division) to see who goes up to the #Top14 (Top division). All behind #RCV #rcvannes They're currently up 7-0, but my heart is in my mouth.🏉

  13. @RegGuy I don’t think I follow the scenario. If 100% of voters put D as second choice, then after a few rounds of the instant runoff, D would pull ahead of 3A. Then 3A would be eliminated, D would get 3A’s voters, and D would win, right?

Typically RCV uses an instant runoff that eliminates the bottom choice in each round. It doesn’t go straight to top-two runoff.

  14. I emailed this to a friend but I want to share it publicly. I am a mathematician and a citizen and as such, I care deeply about the quantitative and geometric aspects of democracy. The nakedly partisan redistricting efforts in the US right now are appalling.

I've done some reading on interesting, innovative, and fair ways to vote and set up districts...and these politicians are not putting up the slightest pretense at fairness. They're not even talking about democracy. From top to bottom, it's just a game, a fight to win, power to be seized. No talk of citizens or the people. Gerrymandering is the act of politicians choosing their voters instead of the other way around, and here, us voters aren't just being chosen, we're being treated like we're not even owed an explanation. They don't proffer the fimsiest justification. They are sorting us into districts like a farmer might sort cows into different barns.

It's like the philosophical distinction between lies and bullshit. Liars are aware of truth and reality and care about it, at least to the extent necessary for their lies. But bullshitters don't care about truth at all. Likewise, these gerrymandering pols do not care about truth, democracy, voters, or justification for their actions.

  15. @gimulnautti @heidilifeldman

you're being aspirational, and correct, but you're not announcing *how* to achieve that

    it's like going "arrest #Trump!"

    ok

    and?

    how?

to get #rankedChoiceVoting, which is creeping in in the #USA, and would allow for stable viable 3rd parties... how?

we have to elect #Democrats who support that (some do, some don't: vote in the #primaries people!)

the #GOP has taken a blanket stand against #RCV nationally, so this is the only way forward

  16. @numodular @georgetakei

    the #USA is an #FPTP #voting system

meaning there can only be 2 parties

it's not corruption, it's just math (not saying corruption doesn't exist, but even if all corruption magically disappeared, we'd still have only 2 parties)

a 3rd party on the left would divide the left vote and #MAGA would win

    i want 3rd parties

to get that we need #rankedChoiceVoting

to get ranked choice voting, we have to elect #Democrats who support it

    ( #GOP has taken a stand against #RCV)

  17. @benroyce @imanormalperson @GoSeiGer @randahl
Also, lobby for Ranked Choice Voting / Instant Runoff Voting (RCV / IRV), and educate folks regarding how it works!

It has the potential to break the two-party stranglehold, thus forcing politicians of all stripes to listen more carefully to voters and work harder at serving the public, rather than simply trying to be the lesser of two evils.
