@ned Like you, I went through elementary and high school here in Alberta in the 70s and early 80s, so these issues were simply unknown to me until much later, even though I grew up within 40 miles of a residential school. And I'm still underinformed, but here are a couple of resources I've found informative.
There have were some pretty good articles on residential schools in Canadian Geographic magazine, but I'm afraid I can't name any specific issues although they would have been a few years back now.
I also recommend looking up _The Story A National Crime_, written in 1922 by Dr P.H. Bryce, the first Chief Medical Officer of the Indian Department. It details the the extensive mistreatment Bryce found in his tenure as CMO, before he was removed by the minister in charge for reporting these conditions. It helps make clear that these abuses were known at the time, and that some Canadians realized their illegal and immoral nature. Bryce's book is short, and relatively approachable.

@Yehuda 100% I am a cis white man but rasied to respect all cultures, I had to educate myself though with real #indiginous history. I really belive me to better education especially history and not written by the victors.

Some more photos from the Art and Artifacts Jane's Walk I attended today, hosted by @ian_hosler (don't think he's very active here though).
The walk took a look at the artworks at the Indigenous Art Park ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞, in Queen Elizabeth Park, the history of the former QE Pool, and then into the City of Edmonton Archives Artifacts Centre.

I'm so excited! These were at the clinic administration building. Two elders, Lisa Enos and Melba Rakow, who are fluent in the Wašiw language, retold and translated four of the People's stories. Each illustrated by a different artist also from the tribe. If you enbiggen the last image you will read Washoe is considered a language isolate, and as you can imagine it is hanging on by a thread and supported by efforts to teach to younger members.
