  2. A rainbow seen from the top floor hallway of my small 3-story walkup building. These towers are being constructed just on the other side of the street. I can’t say the buildings bring joy, since I can never afford to live in places like these here in #Hawaiʻi, but, the #Rainbow 🌈 does. #ānuenue

I used the term “ʻĀina Pākē” in my Hawaiian class and kumu said that is fine if you want to say “the land of the Chinese” but if you want to say “China” the name of the country is “Kina.” #languageDrops has taught me “ʻĀina Pākē” while #uTalk teaches “Kina” — l just lost another unit of trust in Drops :blobcatangery: #ŌleloHawaiʻi #ʻōlelo #hawaiʻi #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #olelo #hawaii

  9. Yesterday I updated my #introduction with my pronouns, & a little screed about how Hawaiian lacks the gendered badness of English pronouns. But Hawaiian pronouns also have some positive good features that English doesn’t have! Did you know that in Hawaiian there are two shades of “we”? One that includes the person you’re talking to (kākou) and one that specifically excludes them (mākou). Now THAT is useful information!!! #ŌleloHawaiʻi #ʻōlelo #hawaiʻi #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #olelo

  10. Meanwhile…the #bigisland fires have come under suspicion…#Hawaiʻi Island fire reported that firefighters responded to a 911 call that came in around 1:17 p.m. The call took fire personnel to several brush fires on Mill Camp Road in Pāhala. These brush fires have been identified to have started under suspicious circumstances. Heartbreaking…

  11. Hawaiʻi prefers tourists from the #SanFrancisco Bay Area, because we're more "mindful travelers" — ones interested in learning about the cultures and environments of the places we go, and wanting to perpetuate those cultures "and not harm the environment."

  13. 3:27 am HST 4.0 #earthquake 6 mi (9 km) E of #Pahala #Hawaiʻi, at 20 mi (32 km) below sea level. The earthquake is not related to the eruption of Mauna Loa and had no apparent impact on the ongoing eruptions at Mauna Loa and Kīlauea.
This earthquake is part of the seismic swarm under Pāhala area, going on since 2019. Earthquakes in this region have been observed at least as far back as the 1960s.

  14. honolulu tv news people trying to get the local official to say that things are scary, but he's very calm: "people on the big island know the risks that they live with." indeed. we know how eruptions go and which areas are actually dangerous. understanding rift zones is the first step.
