Sam, his 16-year old brother was pounding an energy drink with one hand,
scrolled through a lengthy list of group chats with the other,
scouring for reports of ICE and other federal immigration agents in their area.

Mornings like this have been typical in recent weeks for the Luhmann family,
which has drawn on its conservative Christian faith and a shared compulsion to counter
“Operation Midway Blitz,”
the mass deportation push in Chicago launched in September.

They have joined a coalition of activists,
everyday citizens and people of faith
— including theologically conservative Christians
— who have pooled resources and learned new technologies
to mount an effort they say is designed to
protect immigrants in their neighborhoods and around the city.

⭐️‘Christians should be the first people to fight for this.’
Of all the #Luhmanns, Ben and Sam have had the most direct encounters with federal agents
— mostly on purpose.

They’re part of a complex network of “#rapid #response” volunteers who monitor the movement and actions of federal agents,
with everyday residents crisscrossing the Chicago suburbs daily
to keep an eye on unmarked cars typically used by ICE when making arrests.

The idea, Ben said, is to document what federal agents
— who often represent a range of agencies, but which activists generally refer to collectively as ICE
— are doing and to alert the community.

If they come across an ICE vehicle,
especially one conducting an arrest,
the brothers film what they can,
sometimes ask questions of the officers
and then blow whistles to alert people nearby about the presence of ICE.

The duo rolled through a series of neighborhood “hot spots” where arrests have happened in recent weeks.

It was quieter than normal, they said, likely because U.S. Border Patrol had announced plans that week to pull out of the city
and relocate many of its personnel to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Several weeks ago, they said, they could have heard about or come across more than a dozen ICE arrests by midmorning.

But federal agents are still active in the city and, per reports, isn’t planning on leaving anytime soon.

Following the invasion of 3000 ICE officers,
everyday Minnesotans are pouring into #rapid #response networks and scouring their neighborhoods
—even in 20-degree weather before the sun has come up.

“I’m being tailed by a car I think is ICE,
I can make out two masked individuals through the tinted windshield,” someone says.

The call goes quiet for a few seconds.
“I’m being pulled over.”

Dispatch chimes in:

We hear banging,
then something shatters.

“ICE just smashed their window,”
our driver explains calmly,
decelerating ahead of a red light.

We are shocked,
but this is a regular occurrence.

Everyone on the call keeps their cool.

We have heard stories from rapid responders about ICE tailing them,
boxing them in,
smashing their car windows,
pepper-spraying them,
holding them at gun point,
shooting out their tires,
detaining them.

Some responders have been taken to the regional ICE headquarters,
the #Whipple building.

Others have been driven to the other side of the city
and thrown out of the vehicle, ❄️alone in the cold.

Their cars have been left running in the road.

The responders tell us all these stories in passing,
quickly returning focus to the work that is to be done.

Of course, ICE has done worse than this, too.

ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed #Renee #Good as she was trying to drive away.

A week later, as ICE agents were pursuing someone,
they shot live ammunition at a house with a family in it, hitting #Julio #Sosa-#Celis in the leg.

But when you ask patrollers what they want people to know about what’s happening in their city, they barely mention the broken windows and bruises.

They describe the feeling of connection and solidarity filling the streets.

They make ❤️hearts with their hands from car to car, they blow kisses.

They make dinners for one another,
they drop off groceries for undocumented families that have been locked inside their homes for weeks.

They tell us about how, when a skirmish broke out on a busy road,
an entire café full of people stood up as one,
dropping what they were doing to run towards the sound.

We hear again and again about their deep love for the community in the Twin Cities and for their neighbors.

Looking Ahead: My Intentions For 2026

About this time last year, I jotted down some intentions for 2025, ‘a few ideas of the things that I really want to do over the coming twelve months’. I did quite well with these: I resurrected a few old cameras, like the Kodak 1A and 3A folding cameras, and the Vest Pocket Kodak; I finally got to use the medium format half-frame beastie that’s the Bencini Koroll 2; and I actually used my only 127 film in the Purma Special on a 127 Day this year. I also tumbled down the rabbit hole that was the Rapid film system, which led to some great fun with colour emulsions, redscaling, and even trying some EBS photography, or exposing both sides of the emulsion, and of course I added a load more weird and wonderful cameras to my collection.

The only part of my ‘intentions’ for 2025 that I didn’t really get anywhere with was glitching; taking a perfectly good photograph in digital format and altering the data contained in it to produce a corrupted image. As a reminder, images can be glitched in a number of ways: with a Hex Editor, to alter details of individual pixels in an image; processing a digital photograph in a program not intended for editing image files; or using a script in a programming language to corrupt the file. This is known as databending, but there is also circuit bending, which either takes an image and corrupts it using a specially made image processor, or using a camera where the hardware within the camera has been physically altered so that the image saved to the card is corrupted. 

I already have one circuit bent camera, and also a couple of cameras with failing sensors that produce lovely glitchy images, but I’ve also recently obtained an old Digital8 video camera that I hope will allow me to use a circuit bent device called the Mismatcher Petite to corrupt digital images and videos. This year, I also picked up a scanner, the Epson Perfection v750 Pro flatbed scanner, and a little micro computer to use it with. Onto this computer I’ve loaded some of the programs and applications that I hope will aid me with databending and glitching.

I’ve not forgotten film, of course, and although I’m not really in a position to soup and develop my own films, perhaps I can ‘glitch’ some instant film, or deliberately introduce light leaks to exposed 35mm and medium format film, for instance. Of course,  there will always be new (to me) cameras to play with, and if last year is anything to go by, not all of these are light tight, and I have several rolls of expired film to use. With glitching, be it digital  or film, you never quite know what result you’ll get, and that for me is what will make the coming year so exciting.

While there are certainly some uses (e.g. low-quality backup where more precise data is simply not available yet for e.g. #HOT humanitarian efforts in case of earthquakes etc), note that especially adding #Overture building data to #OpenStreetMap (e.g. #RapID) is very often frowned upon, due to its low accuracy and broken geometries)
