Hawaii’s housing crisis was at a breaking point even before the fire. Since then, displaced families have struggled to rebuild their lives.
"...The Lahaina fire burned 2,170 acres, destroyed more than 2,700 structures and killed at least 102 people. Some 12,000 people lost their homes overnight.
Less than a year later, 11,637 Hawaii residents were homeless, an 87 percent increase from before the fire, and the number of residents living in emergency shelters or in transitional places — ranging from FEMA-funded housing to friends’ garages — had tripled...."

From County of Maui on FB: Tropical storm conditions are now spreading across Maui County as Hurricane Lala approaches, and a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe.
Heavy rainfall is expected to slam the valley isle, with 8 to 12 inches forecast for East Maui and 4 to 6 inches expected in West Maui. Officials warn that this intense downpour could trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas of steep terrain. Stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel.

Since I was already in Hawaii and had flown over Mauna Kea in the Cessna 172 (see previous post), it made sense to also fly over Haleakalā on the neighbouring island of Maui. With the well-powered Super Cub, it didn't take long to reach 13,000 ft for enjoying the fantastic view.

Just read several posts from displaced #Maui families who are very frustrated by lack of on-the-ground aid. FEMA has provided $700 immediate assistance. Meanwhile, the #MauiStrong hashtag has led to $56 million in donations to the Hawaii Community Foundation, which provides no direct aid but gives donations to other groups like shelters. But Lahaina's shelters can't house many people. The displaced need rent money now.
