#HowTo use 2 separate camera apps on #Android depending on if the phone is locked or not.

For the advanced hardware usage and mainly #jpegli compression I use #GoogleCamera on #GrapheneOS.

But that camera is very bloated and exposes a ton of attack surface that way.

Android asks twice which camera app to open when pressing the "double power button" shortcut, when locked and when unlocked. So you can set 2 different apps there.

This is not exposed in the settings and the dialog only appears after installing or uninstalling one of the possible camera apps.

As I had set #GCam as default apps on both invoking methods before, I quickly install #FossifyCamera, turn of the display, use the shortcut.

Android asks to unlock the screen, then the selection dialog appears.

I uninstall FossifyCamera again and do the same, dialog appears again, I select #GrapheneOSCamera there.

Done! Attack surface when screen is locked reduced.

Version number 68469120 still works. People can enter that one in #Aurorastore and hopefully it is still cached.

If your camera still works, install an app like https://github.com/ghmxr/apkextractor and extract the #APK, share with others!

Otherwise checkout #APKPure or #APKMirror

Look for version 9.9.106.77...

⚠️ PSA for those using the #GoogleCamera alias #GCam:

Starting with version 10 the GCam no longer works without Play Services installed. Latest version known to be working without them is 9.9.

If you are affected by this and don't want to get the update by accident you should blacklist the app in your app store such as #AuroraStore.

Equipment: #Nokia XR21 with a port of #GoogleCamera installed. The camera's pixel resolution on paper is brilliant but the actual resolution feels terrible. It's very blurry if you pinch and zoom, but otherwise it's very good. Plan on upgrading in the distant future

I love how #Google is trying to shove Gen "AI" and LLMs down every last hole they can find, but there's no evident way to OCR a photo in the #GooglePhotos #Android app, nor in the web interface.

#GoogleLens is sometimes useful, but it's moved around every two quarters so some product owner can feel as if they achieved something, and it only auto-appears in #GoogleCamera when I don't want to use it.

So I'll transcribe by hand, because why would the computer do that for me.

Saw the #northernlights tonight! They were so beautiful ✨✨✨

These were all taken #freehand with the #GoogleCamera app on a #Fairphone4 with the astrophotography mode. They were visible to the naked eye, and danced around celestial north.

#kpindex was ~8.33 according to the app I have, taken at ~11:30pm - ~12:15pm

I can post instructions later for anyone who wants to know how, but I figured out how to use the #AuroraStore to revert the #GoogleCamera / #PixelCamera app to the version before the horrendously dumb UI redesign.

It's wonderful to have my old camera app back. So much more convenient.

@toad un annetto fa ho comprato un Pixel 6a su cui ho installato da subito #GrapheneOS e non posso che concordare.
Graphene miglior OS privacy-oriented che abbia provato fin’ora e #GoogleCamera (a cui ho potuto disattivare l’accesso a Internet grazie a Graphene) fa miracoli, anche se ogni tanto ci va giù un po’ troppo pesante con il post-processing per i miei gusti.

È paradossale ma, nerd o no, la ritengo la miglior opzione per chi cerca uno smartphone #android

Our next release includes a toggle for users to choose whether Google apps they install can directly use Pixel hardware accelerators. This controls direct access to Tensor TPU on both 6th/7th generation Pixels and also direct access to the GXP for Google Camera on 7th gen Pixels.
