  1. I don't even need to look at the forecast. I know if the KP index is high, Ottawa will be cloudy. But the rest of you, keep an eye out this evening for the Northern Lights. KP index should be highest around 8PM ET.

  2. In February 1204, the Japanese court poet Fujiwara no Teika recorded in his diary that a terrifying "red vapor" and glowing red light filled the night sky over Kyoto for three consecutive nights.

Eight centuries later, scientists analyzed carbon-14 spikes in ancient tree rings and confirmed he had witnessed a massive, historic solar storm.

The red skies were a severe, low-latitude aurora borealis triggered by powerful coronal mass ejections. A solar storm of that magnitude today would have fried every satellite, GPS system, and global power grid on Earth.

  3. 20240511 | The Northern Lights from Oregon

Came back home from a t4t event and saw that here on fedi that there was aurora activity!

Never before had seen aurora and was curious and excited (couldn't make anything out from our apartment).

it was probably 2200 and i asked my then partner, wanna go see if we can see it?

i think we were both kinda eepy, but we decided it was a go and so i grabbed the photo gear and we headed out.

20 or so minutes into driving down I-84 eastbound, we could see it clearly out the car windows!

kept driving at least another hour to try to find a spot to capture it further out in the gorge.

there were so many ppl out and by this time it was almost midnight.

stopped at a little spot that actually overlooks I-84 and set my manual 9 mm f/2.8 (sold this lens a while ago) on my Fuji X-T4, got focus, and took this shot.

we kept driving another hour or so east and ended up in cascade locks down by the park and got some lovely time together just enjoying the colors.

headed home and i think we got home around 0300 or a smidge after iirc.

possibly most fun adventure day of 2024 :neodog_floof_cute:

  6. Nordlichter vom Churer Rheintal aus.
Leider ist bei uns der Calanda etwas im Weg.
Aber was soll’s, meine ersten Nordlichter. 🤩

  7. We went down to Sailor's Creek State Park outside of Farmville, VA, USA in hopes of seeing the second round of Northern Lights. Saw a few columns with the naked eye but these long exposures really show them off. #Astrophotography #Aurora #AuroraBorealis #NorthernLights #LoveVA #Virginia #OMSystem #OM1 #ON1pics

  9. How to photograph the Northern Lights. This is the guide I followed and it worked a treat.

    In a nutshell (TL;DR)-

Use a Tripod, set delay timer, set focus

    High ISO
Slow shutter speed ( 3/8/25 seconds)
    Widest Aperture available
