  1. Beams

This photo has been horribly overworked, I admit it, but there is method in my madness.

This was taken looking almost directly upwards from below a KP7 auroral display. It was quite cloudy but the aurora was so bright that it cast a shadow at my feet.

When I first processed the image, I didn't think there was much of interest in it. More editing revealed these fabulous green beams, seeming to disappear into infinity.

  6. In February 1204, the Japanese court poet Fujiwara no Teika recorded in his diary that a terrifying "red vapor" and glowing red light filled the night sky over Kyoto for three consecutive nights.

Eight centuries later, scientists analyzed carbon-14 spikes in ancient tree rings and confirmed he had witnessed a massive, historic solar storm.

The red skies were a severe, low-latitude aurora borealis triggered by powerful coronal mass ejections. A solar storm of that magnitude today would have fried every satellite, GPS system, and global power grid on Earth.

  7. Just returned from a ski tour through western Jämtland. Started from from Storulvån and did a loop of nearly 100km past Sylarna, Helags, Vålådalen and back. Partially off trail. Conditions were ok‘ish. Quite stormy at times. Not a lot of snow and lots of ice.

  8. January was the coldest in #Finland since 1987.

In this article by Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle, you can watch nearly 90 pics from different parts of the country.

Yes, plenty of Northern Lights. Plenty of snow. Plenty of ice. In this cold, but beautiful #WinterWonderland.

  9. #AuroraBorealis in #Loviisa on the Finnish Southern coast. To the naked eye this was like ”is there something there?” but the IPhone camera picked it up surprisingly well.

  10. Our final night in Norway for the winter. Sad to be moving on. Can never get enough of the polar nights and dancing lights.

  11. One more special capture from the night of March 3. In the early part of the evening we stood outside our cabin and shot the aurora as the clouds faded away.

This scene is taken shooting straight up overhead, with a 14mm lens. Even then, it wasn't wide enough to capture the full scene. Just a glimpse really!
