  1. Forked Tongue

Aurora lights the sky above Fardagafoss in eastern Iceland.

An unusually clear night in October means that it's well below freezing but we aren't troubled by clouds. Even though we weren't in a dark sky area (it was a Bortle¹ 4) we could still see lots of stars.

This lovely display lasted for almost two hours.

  2. August 14th/15th - I set up a camera as usual, not sure if the cloud will clear or stay clear tonight. I screwed up the focussing on this one but, it shows the ridiculous number of satellites we already have along with an Aurora on the horizon.

  4. In February 1204, the Japanese court poet Fujiwara no Teika recorded in his diary that a terrifying "red vapor" and glowing red light filled the night sky over Kyoto for three consecutive nights.

Eight centuries later, scientists analyzed carbon-14 spikes in ancient tree rings and confirmed he had witnessed a massive, historic solar storm.

The red skies were a severe, low-latitude aurora borealis triggered by powerful coronal mass ejections. A solar storm of that magnitude today would have fried every satellite, GPS system, and global power grid on Earth.

  5. 20240511 | The Northern Lights from Oregon

Came back home from a t4t event and saw that here on fedi that there was aurora activity!

Never before had seen aurora and was curious and excited (couldn't make anything out from our apartment).

it was probably 2200 and i asked my then partner, wanna go see if we can see it?

i think we were both kinda eepy, but we decided it was a go and so i grabbed the photo gear and we headed out.

20 or so minutes into driving down I-84 eastbound, we could see it clearly out the car windows!

kept driving at least another hour to try to find a spot to capture it further out in the gorge.

there were so many ppl out and by this time it was almost midnight.

stopped at a little spot that actually overlooks I-84 and set my manual 9 mm f/2.8 (sold this lens a while ago) on my Fuji X-T4, got focus, and took this shot.

we kept driving another hour or so east and ended up in cascade locks down by the park and got some lovely time together just enjoying the colors.

headed home and i think we got home around 0300 or a smidge after iirc.

possibly most fun adventure day of 2024 :neodog_floof_cute:

  13. "G3 Watch for 4-5 June UTC Days" by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center SWPC - A solar flare, more precisely a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), may cause aurora at geomagnetic storm level G3 on Earth during UTC days June 4-5. G3 means expected Kp=7, with #AuroraBorealis down to US Midwest & northern Europe and #AuroraAustralis to South Island, New Zealand and Tasmania & Victoria, Australia.
