  1. The name Aurora Borealis was coined by Galileo in the 17th century. He named the phenomenon after Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn and Boreas, the Greek god of the north wind. 10 things you might not know about the Northern Lights.

  3. 2 years ago I saw and got pictures of #AuroraBorealis during the May 10, 2024 solar storm. The second viewing location was Memaloose State Park, between Hood River and The Dalles, at an overlook above the Columbia River (Oregon/Washington border). Note the reflection of #aurora in the river. #astronomy #SpaceWeather #PNW

  4. 2 years ago I saw and got pictures of #AuroraBorealis during the May 10, 2024 solar storm. It was the 2nd time I had seen #aurora, and so far the best. I drove east from Portland and could see aurora while I was driving. I stopped for pictures at Multnomah Falls (Oregon's most popular waterfall) and farther east at Memaloose State Park (between Hood River and The Dalles). First, from Multnomah Falls, note the falls were south and still had aurora in the background. #astronomy #SpaceWeather #PNW

  5. Under Green

The aurora is singing tonight, its voice a stellar whisper, its song a celestial serenade.

The lights dance over the silent mountains, a beauty that keeps the dark at bay. The stage is a starlit sky, its audience the silent snow, and me, and now you.

Teigarhorn is one bright point below the dazzling streamers above. Early November, Búlandstindur mountain in Berufjörður, eastern Iceland.

  6. Out and About – Night Sky

Here are a few images of the night sky that I have collected as of late 2024. Included are some Aurora shots, two different comets, a lunar eclipse, the Milky Way and some light pillars.

Northern Lights in September 2004, seen by the Monolith at Vigelandsparken in Oslo Some purples and greens behind a group of girls in the park A bit of the Milky Way in October of 2024, seen over cabins high above Voss in Norway
(we can’t see the galactic core here at this time of year) Looking the other way, I think I caught Pleiades near the top of the sky and Jupiter is the bright light On 15 October 2024, we went out to find Comen Tsuchinshan-ATLAS from our neighborhood in Oslo
(Clear skies and a fairly bright comet made it easy enough to find with help of a sky map on my phone — and my better half could see it by eye via binoculars) On 31 October 2025, we went to a nearby beach, Hvervenbukta, to attempt to find the Comet A6-Lemmon
(Cloudy skies and a much fainter comet made it much more difficult to “see”– can you find it?) On 7 September 2025, the lunar eclipse was just starting to end by the time the moon finally appeared over the hilly horizon of our neighborhood in Oslo Just a normal moon, but with a bit of earthshine along with that waxing crescent An almost full moon, caught in some tree branches On a cold night back in January, the ice crystals in the atmosphere reflected lights from the ground into light pillars
    (I thought at first it was some sort of bizarre albino Aurora…silly me!) #AuroraBorealis #LightPillars #LunarEclipse #MilkyWay #Moon #NightSky #NorthernLights #Norway #Oslo #Photoblog #Photography

  10. For this weekend's photos, a couple of nightscapes featuring Aurora over Northumberland. First shot has the deeper Aurora colours the second shot has a shooting star towards the middle left of the sky.

  11. Infinite Loop

Over the 12 years that we've been taking holidays in Iceland, I must have snapped thousands of aurora photos. This one is still among my favourites.

November. The 94% illuminated moon was high in the south-east, and lit the mountains on the opposite side of Berufjörður. The night was clear and still.

This curl of green aurora looping over the peaks and reflecting in the fjord gave me this great shot.

  12. Bit of a busy day, photographically - afternoon out up the glens, set up the telescope this evening and then just a quick aurora tonight to round it off :)

  13. A juxtaposition between natural and artificial light.

It was -19°C. Ice crystals in the air reflect a car's headlights causing it to look like a pillar.

I love how the light shining over the snow makes this look like the surface of a different planet.
