  1. Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on May 11, 2026

Some of the camera settings I used to make this photo are at: rsok.com/~jrm/2026May31_birds_

There is also a video made from the still photo zooming in to the eye of the squirrel. rsok.com/~jrm/2026May31_birds_. This has sometimes been called the "Ken Burns effect", although he was not the first to use it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Burn.

  3. Phlox subulata in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on March 24, 2026

I made a web page with the results of my experiment using AI to write code including images, source code, dialog with Claude, and image produced by rawtherapee from the dng raw file that Claude's program produced.

  6. #HowTo use 2 separate camera apps on #Android depending on if the phone is locked or not.

For the advanced hardware usage and mainly #jpegli compression I use #GoogleCamera on #GrapheneOS.

But that camera is very bloated and exposes a ton of attack surface that way.

Android asks twice which camera app to open when pressing the "double power button" shortcut, when locked and when unlocked. So you can set 2 different apps there.

This is not exposed in the settings and the dialog only appears after installing or uninstalling one of the possible camera apps.

As I had set #GCam as default apps on both invoking methods before, I quickly install #FossifyCamera, turn of the display, use the shortcut.

Android asks to unlock the screen, then the selection dialog appears.

I uninstall FossifyCamera again and do the same, dialog appears again, I select #GrapheneOSCamera there.

Done! Attack surface when screen is locked reduced.

    #jpegli Sounds very Swiss... 🤔 🇨🇭
    ✅ Small
    ✅ Efficient
✅ Excessive use of -li suffix.

  14. #Google reckons that it can improve #JPEG with #Jpegli, a new #encoder and #decoder #library that promises to be highly compatible with JPEG.

Jpegli uses heuristics developed for #JPEGXL, making it more of a JPEG XL successor (or improvement). Compared to JPEG it offers a higher #compression ratio, 10+-bit support which should reduce issues like banding. Jpegli #images are said to be compatible with existing JPEG decoders, much like #JPEGXT and XL

Google is hoping to further optimize JPEG images.

To be clear this is not a new format, it's still JPEG, same extension, same properties & capabilities, but a new open-source library for handling compression & decompression which they hope will give an almost 35% improvement in the compression ratio.

Apparently Googles new method is heavily based on a back-ported version of the techniques used in JPEGXL
