  1. Houston! We have an Internet Advertising Problem!

    More goodness from ProfGMedia www.profgmedia.com/

FTC Act Section 5 requires online influencers to disclose (clearly and conspicuously) when they are paid to promote something. Failure to do so = deceptive advertising and is CLEARLY ILLEGAL.

    - Polymarket was busted paying online influencers (undisclosed) $2-3K a pop to post simulated bets (1,100) on a fake website that generated ~ 140M views, with many showing big profits, when in fact, in the real world the bets would have lost $$.

    > 100 million brand-related posts on Twitter across 268 brands had ~ 96% of sponsored posts were not disclosed.

    - millions of posts on YouTube and Pinterest were analyzed and had disclosures only 10% and 7% of the time.

Why it matters? Gen Z (ages ~14-29) say they’re more likely to buy from a brand b/c it partners with an influencer they like. Surveys show Gen Z'ers trust an influencer endorsement of a product over an ad from the business itself

  2. the ingredients of this oat milk say “vitamins (zinc, A, B12, riboflavin, D2)” yet none of those are mentioned in the nutrition facts box.

also its name is “two bears” but there is clearly only one bear in the logo!!

  3. No one but people living in New York and New Jersey should be donating to Kars4Kids, the charity organization with the most annoying jingle in tv history.

The judge found that the organization violated California laws by failing to disclose that donations primarily fund programs that send 17-18 yr olds Orthodox Jewish kids to study in Israel.

  4. "Now, we're in this cycle of like, 'what's a podcast? Is it a video, is it audio, is it a YT channel?'. To me, it's the RSS feed; if you can take it with you, and I can listen to it on anything, not just YT, that's a podcast to me."

Any company promoting media as a "podcast", but we can't subscribe using our podcatcher of choice, *and* download for offline listening, is guilty of false advertising.

  6. It's weird that FOX is still advertising as "FOX 23" here even though they're not on channel 23 anymore, they're on channel 8.2...

  8. Well, I've finished all of Cougar Town, and I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed by the severe lack of middle-aged “cougaring” and the rampant glorification of middle-aged alcoholism 🍷 🐆 #FalseAdvertising

  9. #RealEstate listing photos edited through artificial intelligence create false impressions of homes for sale online. How A.I. slop is making house hunting in #USA even more dishonest and distorted than ever before.

  10. A friend recently sent me a link to a podcast episode I might enjoy;

    open.spotify.com/episode/6WAqe

Turns out it can only be heard when logged into Spitify's proprietary platform.

I think there needs to be a large-scale campaign of false advertising complaints against platforms that call a show a "podcast", but only allow you to hear it on their platform.

It's like calling something a website when you can't view it in any web browser, only a proprietary app.

  11. Large language models do not, cannot, and will not “understand” anything at all. They are not emotionally intelligent or smart in any meaningful or recognizably human sense of the word. LLMs are impressive probability gadgets that have been fed nearly the entire internet, and produce writing not by thinking but by making statistically informed guesses about which lexical item is likely to follow another.

  12. One day when I have a couple of spare spoons I want to put in a report about false advertising on the two online games I play.
Both have multiple fake characters claiming 'I am the boss of ...'
Lately they also have real actors but use AI voices (all somewhat flat). Even more annoying than claiming they are all the boss.

Either Temu and a well known game change bosses every couple of weeks or they are lying.
