Ecoregion conservation status (Landscape ecology 🏞️)
Conservation status is a measure used in conservation biology to assess an ecoregion's degree of habitat alteration and habitat conservation. It is used to set priorities for conservation. Ecoregion Conservation Status refers to the assessment and categorization of the ecological health, biodiversity...

Welcome @ecotenet to @mastodon. Good to see this approach to foster place knowledge through #ecoregions. Do check out our effort in India to use #ecoregions as a framework to guide #EcologicalRestoration.

Ecological classification (Biogeography 🌍)
Ecological classification or ecological typology is the classification of land or water into geographical units that represent variation in one or more ecological features. Traditional approaches focus on geology, topography, biogeography, soils, vegetation, climate conditions, living species, habita...

Phytochorion (Phytogeography 🌱)
A phytochorion, in phytogeography, is a geographic area with a relatively uniform composition of plant species. Adjacent phytochoria do not usually have a sharp boundary, but rather a soft one, a transitional area in which many species from both regions overlap. The region of overlap is called a vegetation tension zone. In traditi...

Barren vegetation (Ecosystems 🏞️)
Barren vegetation describes an area of land where plant growth may be sparse, stunted, and/or contain limited biodiversity. Environmental conditions such as toxic or infertile soil, high winds, coastal salt-spray, and climatic conditions are often key factors in poor plant growth and development. Barren vegetation can be categorized depending on the climate, geology, ...

List of biogeographic provinces (Landscape ecology 🏞️)
This page features a list of biogeographic provinces that were developed by Miklos Udvardy in 1975, later modified by other authors. Biogeographic Province is a biotic subdivision of biogeographic realms subdivided into ecoregions, which are classified based on their biomes o...

Link to the decade old report by Schneider on the #future distribution of #ecoregions in #alberta with details on the #modeling - basically, #scientists told us this would happen.
-
Thinking about #forestfires in #canada today. 10 y ago, Rick Schneider put out a report predicting what would happen to the #ecoregions of #Alberta because of 🌡️ #climatechange.
It shocked me 🤯 to see how much more #grassland there would be and how much less 🌲#BorealForest by 2050.
In 2023, I think we’re seeing how this massive #ecological transition plays out. Those trees don’t just disappear- they 🔥 #burn.
And as they burn, they release massive amounts of #carbon. -
Last night, I figured out the offending Placemarks. EcoRegion 84c includes two marshy islands In Hempstead Bay: Cinder Island and North Cinder Island. Their boundaries overlap!
https://www.google.com/mymaps/viewer?mid=1SuOTCXsU735Js3laAh3kpm3OYqF1_XI&hl=enI can give each its own layer in my Google Map of 84c, export as separate KMLs, then import into iNat as two small Places.

I'm learning about ecoregions, something I've never paid attention to. https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ecoregions Really interesting. And by identifying the Level IV ecoregions of places I care about, it's unlocking new ways of digging around for more local info on #nativeplants. Plus, look at this gorgeous map of the 967 #ecoregions in the 48 conterminous states (also a new term to me): https://gaftp.epa.gov/EPADataCommons/ORD/Ecoregions/us/Eco_Level_IV_US.pdf
