💰 CO₂ taxes, climate penalties & billions – but where are the monitoring stations? 📡

🚨 Where are the early-warning systems for people in the Himalayan valleys?

🔬 Monitor glaciers, predict floods, protect people!

😣 A shift in climate ideology from left to right must be possible – otherwise, democracy is at an end.

TITLE: Why Are European Leaders Silent After a Summer of Climate Shock?

    URL: socialpsychology.org/client/re

Source: The Guardian - Climate Crisis

Despite four heatwaves that have scorched Europe this summer—shattering temperature records, fanning unprecedented fires, and causing thousands of excess deaths—few politicians want to talk about climate action. One exception is France's radical-left firebrand, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who warned recently that the term "climate change" may sound "almost reassuring," but its actual impact will feel like "landing on another planet whenever we...

  4. Models to assess scenarios of futures often reflect Western concerns and values. They assume persistent inequalities, obscure ethical or normative choices, and systematically fail to include stakeholders and scientists from other cultures.
    "
    • We explore limitations of modelling science in assessing different justice dimensions
    • We emphasise various procedural, recognitional, and epistemic justice considerations
    • We take aim at the disconnect with non-modellers and Global South underrepresentation."

  5. SUMMARY - The AI Data Center Backlash
    isoclive.substack.com/p/datace

A Boston Review panel — Astra Taylor, Robinson Meyer of Heatmap, and Monterey Park organizer Nicholas Rabb, moderated by Lily Hu — on the revolt against hyperscale AI data centers: polling that flipped in seven months, the first US city to ban them by both ordinance and ballot, and what moratoria can actually accomplish.

  6. South Korea Unveils 2026 Energy Transition Roadmap

Seoul targets 100 GW of renewables by 2030 and outlines coal phase-out timeline while confirming new nuclear projects proceed as scheduled.

  7. The PM gestures while his government manages money movers.

In top article: Burnham: "We have to face up to the changing climate. I think we need a different debate about that. There’s no point denying where we are. We need to face up to it. We need more clean energy. We need to see that transition accelerate."

In bottom article: "Andy Burnham moves to cut new EV sales targets"
"Possible cut from 80% down to as little as 50% could add millions of tonnes of CO2 to emissions and comes amid UK heatwaves"

  8. Activities force climate shifts, which in turn disable life.
    Some mitigation could be envisaged:
"Maintaining functioning ecosystems in a hotter world will require mass-scale assisted colonisation, so appropriate conservation policy, legislative frameworks and regulating bodies must be urgently developed."

Carly Phillips @carlyphillips.bsky.social , a senior scientist with the nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists, said she saw a "broad attack on attribution science that's been happening for many months," including from Republicans in Congress, who are pushing to outlaw climate accountability lawsuits.
"Judges need reliable scientific information about climate change so that they can evaluate those cases on their merits".

In their article ‘The electricity market is at a crossroads’, Prof. Dr. Axel Ockenfels and Prof. Dr. Veronika Grimm explore why today’s market design needs to evolve – and make the case for stronger market signals, regional electricity prices and effective CO₂ pricing to encourage investment and innovation. 📈⚙️

  14. AI data centers are choosing gas power over cheaper solar alternatives. A study found off-grid solar microgrids cost only 8% more than gas and deploy a year faster. Yet 82+ private gas plants are being built anyway. Economics aren't driving this choice. implicator.ai/ai-data-centers- #AI #Energy #ClimatePolicy

  15. My theory as to why so much climate advocacy rarely directs policy is that a) the cost of transition are concentrated on a small group of losers (petrostates) and b) that the benefits are diffuse and mostly land on people that don't vote or don't exist (yet).

Imo, Trump did more for decarbonisation by forcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz than decades of climate activism, because not powering your economy hurts now, not in 40 years.

  16. The EU's adaptation framework serves as a distraction. The cover for treating adaptation as purely technical is thinner than it has been in years. This summer ongoing disasters offer an opening to:
    * discuss adaptation;
    * look at the perpetrators: fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app

  17. I just now have decided to:
    • keep climate science and carbon management here and
    • write about social adaptation to climate risks there: @eric

#adaptation to climate drift there: @eric

  18. #Adaptation gets treated as technical work when it's extremely political. Someone decides which communities are defended, which regions are given up, and who pays.
France's mega-basin enforcers show how such centralization triggers organised resistance: climatejustice.social/@breton/

  19. The EU report is detailed and gives an impression that a 3°C planet would be harsh but manageable under the same institutions.
The report does not wonder about unknown unknowns. It does not address supply-chain disruption, financial contagion or people displacement. It lives in a fancy Fortress Europe.

The report also never mentions #AMOC once, even as the evidence for the risk of its collapse to Europe hardens and Iceland starts treating it as a national security threat:

  20. The EU's adaptation framework offers an illusion of preparation. Laying out plans for a 3°C drift average does not make it survivable. But it makes it seem so. 🧵

Europe is not even preparing for what happened recently!
In the pine plantations west of Bordeaux, firefighters met the first pyrocumulonimbus France has ever seen.
