  1. "With the #Tories having in effect turned against #NetZero, joined by #ReformUK, #RestoreBritain, and most of the rightwing media, disagreeing with weather forecasters who express alarm about our changing #climate has become more mainstream."

  3. @urlyman I think politicians need a new term to describe the aim to cut fossil fuel use. Net Zero has been so weaponised, it now reads 'woke', and can be easily dismissed. I hope Burnham's Comms teams can come up with something catchy to reflect new urgency for action in face of current heatwaves.

  5. More evidence that climate change is more about increasingly erratic weather than just heatwaves; while the UK suffers heatwaves & drought, in Japan there are unprecedented levels of rain, causing flooding.

(again) mitigation is only part of the necessary response; across the world societies & politicians need to take the target of Net Zero seriously, if we are to maintain our ability to live on a planet we've abused for generations.

  7. The UK's heatwaves this summer are having uneven effects across a range of known inequalities & differences; we need a society wide response rather than the usual focus on individual mitigation. Climate change is a social challenge that requires a well-developed state response.

But of course, mitigation (individual or social) is only part of any response; what we really need is more work to change our impact on the environment!

  10. Here are the ten policies that the Guardian favours to respond to the climate crisis... its a good list:

Of course, some of these are easier than others, but that is politics... perhaps more importantly, vested interests will (do) resist each of these - its time for our political class to lead us towards a better prepared future not look to protect who has profited from the past....

  12. Are you a #Norwich resident?

Are you concerned about how your city is adapting to #ClimateChange?

Does helping the city make real tangible progress towards #NetZero matter to you ?

Do you think the city could operate more sustainably?

  16. #Greenwashing isn’t excluded from poorly designed #CarboOffset schemes in Australia and a lot more needs to be done to make them work as they are intended to. I know that. But some people are just dead set against leaving a planet that can be habitable to future generations, to satify their short term self-interests and political agenda.

Opposition to a projct which involves native reforestation alongside reduced grazing land (and in this case other ‘agricultural’ production) on whatever grounds sure seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Government handouts to make #ClimateAction happen isn’t a zero sum game. In our current #NeoLIberal economic climate, that is what govt have to do to lower emmissions and save ecosystems for the greater good. It would be better if govt declared whole swathes of Country off limit to exploitation forever, but some nutters would bring up #cultural (whose culture?) and #historical (whose history?) loss as well as loss of productive agricultural land (whatever that means if clearfelling, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer are all required to make it so). I won’t even talk about the economic and ecological folly of growing meat on the hoof at industrial scales.

  18. Amazingly, it would be better for the climate to SCRAP a working ICE vehicle and replace it with a BEV! 😵‍💫At the very least we should no longer be putting new ICE vehicles into circulation, and anyone driving more than 7k miles per year should drive electric. #netzero

  19. Bill McKibben reminds us we have the technology to limit our climate damage. Solar is the cheapest form of electricity ever. We just have to roll it out while the obstructionists try to stop that from happening. #netzero youtube.com/watch?v=9LTGzEzDat0
