For players AND DMs, here's what actually makes your character enjoyable to play, whether you're running D&D, Shadowdark, Old-School Essentials, Daggerheart, or anything else.

One of the best experiences I ever had as a tabletop roleplayer was a very intense campaign in which characters weren't created by rolling dice or filling out character sheets. Instead the gamemaster spent hours with each player discussing their characters as people, not numbers or statistics.
We literally described them as if they were characters in a book or people we knew. It gave us a really different outlook on the characters, much more focused on their personalities and histories rather than the mechanics of their representation in the game.
And those discussions with the GM went on over weeks. We'd talk for an hour or two, break for a couple of days to think things over, and then talk again. That allowed us to develop the characters to a far greater degree than anything I had ever experienced before.
The GM was my best friend, and I knew that he was one of the best GMs I had ever met. So when it came time to create my character, I decided to try something different: My essential concept, I told him, was essentially something like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. He would start as a sniveling loser, but along the way he would transform.
To make things more interesting, I also suggested that he have little or no memory of his childhood. That gave the GM a lot to work with; I was going to change, but I didn't know what I would change into or how, and I would have very limited information about my early life.
There are some gamemasters I wouldn't trust with that much leeway, but in this case it felt right.
By the way, I used that same method of character creation, or a modified version of it, for a number of other campaigns I did over the years. I have to say that it ALWAYS paid off. The more time you put in ahead of the game to create character personalities, the more involved each player will be with their characters. They get into their heads much more. Better role playing happens.

@SingsongRaptor So, I went digging further for more creators since our last conversation and I did find a few more:
White dude, but not really in the same category as people like Blenderguru. Has GNC vibes: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4DaGBn7XmbKv4z9sm54EpQ
May or may not be regurgitating other tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQTET1MMhAoyh3Z1Bvjzb7Q
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9f635xKNNvvPIo2NMIKhVw
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjyLZIi1J-RibHlkOZlNzPA
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1UILYDfxQHygvzlH7_uhdA
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA__21U4T5ctDohiwoOAaoQ
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYw9MgboDTpSzdx9sAIDcIw
But in terms of non white dude character tutorial makers, there's the ones I mentioned before like Crashsune Academy and sorry stacy on #Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA1s35ZIAQNYTUTCNvFDqbA
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO3AOLFI3GsXAuRhYOR-wyA
Poole's also also making a character creation series, but he is a white dude, just not really in the same category of the standard #Blender tutorial maker, so that's up to you. I've spoken to him before, he seems chill. However, the first two I've mentioned focus on low-poly while Poole's is still very simple. Definitely not as insane as FFXIV characters.
I talked to a 3D Vtuber artist, and these are the suggestions she gave on minority tutorial makers, but they're mostly VRChat-focused:
https://www.youtube.com/@RainhetChaneru/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@KokouUwU/videos
And this one's on #Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sn0whunter_
I don't think I've found any that focus on creating gear/weapons, unfortunately. Most of the character creation series tend to be really basic. I'll keep an eye out, though.

Just started the first Diablo. Skimming through it's Wikipedia I saw a Brevik's quote that aligned exactly with my feelings towards RPGs. Never felt so contemplated.
PS: Never played any NHL though (and likely never will)

6.3: Fully Automated! A Solarpunk RPG with Andy Gross
This week on Solarpunk Presents, we’re bringing you an interview with Andy Gross, one of the brilliant minds behind Fully Automated! A Solarpunk TableTop RPG (Role-Playing Game). Don’t worry, you don’t need to know game jargon to follow along for this one - solarpunk storytelling comes in a lot of different forms, and this is yet another kind for people to use to imagine a kinder, greener future that strives towards a utopia … of sorts.
RPGs get a reputation for being all about fighting. How does that work if the RPG is solarpunk? Or utopian even? What is an RPG, in the first place? What is the usefulness of a solarpunk RPG? Join us as we discuss these questions and more.
Art from the Fully Automated website used in episode cover is by Sean Bodley as well as a few other artists and this will get updated to credit them when we track them down :)

Things people liked from my character creation test.
Making a character is straight forward, easy, and step by step.
People were excited to play their character.
The attributes have little descriptive keywords under them.
The idea of having a home and the number of examples.
That inheritance/upbringing/expertise have both a narrative and mechanic choice merged together and there are lots of choices.
Also beetle people are cool.

I'm going to attempt to explain how I design characters.
Generally speaking, my characters go through 6 phases, often going backwards and forwards through these phases as I fully realize the character.

Finished blocking in my Sergal base mesh for my game's character. All these shapes will be merged together to make a sculpting base where I can add a lot more intricate detail.
As head/facial features vary among different ethnicities of Sergal, I'll be making a Southern and Northern head mesh to graft on later, just as I'll be making the hands and feet separately to graft on in place of the mitten hands and sock feet.

Side characters aren't just background noise; they're the heartbeat of your narrative, weaving depth, tension, and diversity into every chapter.

@jerodleupold Yeah, it really reduces the cognitive load when I've got a pile of XP to spend. I'm picking from a submenu then, but one of my own choosing. And of course I'm not bound to it if the character happens to develop in a different direction.
-
@jerodleupold I tend to come up with "who is this person?" first. Then I go look for an archetype and career to match. Finally I settle on fiddling with the starting attributes, skills, and talents. I'll usually also make a note of my wishlist of future talents for as the game progresses.

@dreamup When making a character, I don't intentionally keep anything of myself. I play characters of different genders and sexualities than me. I play characters with different flaws and different strengths than I have. My own ethics are what is most likely to bleed through into a PC, but my PCs are often passionate about causes that I am not. I play TTRPGs to have fun, but also to explore different viewpoints. Playing myself would be tedious. I do that in real life.
