Grit: This is a talent in #Genesys. It increases your strain threshold by 1. For the same XP cost, you could get Toughened, which increases your wound threshold by 2. This is a testament to how strain is a more precious resource than wounds are. Only injury can cause you wounds, but many things cause strain. Social gaffes, spells gone awry, NPCs influencing you.

Directness: Generally speaking, I like theater of the mind, particularly with #Genesys, where side results on a roll can define new things about the environment. I like leaving things open in an RPG until they need to be pinned down. Sometimes, though, this creates different pictures in everyone’s head. It’s okay to pause every now and then and ask for specific information. Just how many rows of shelves are in this warehouse? Is the door on the south wall in the SE or SW corner?

Composure: The climax of our #Genesys #Wesnoth game saw a social encounter happening alongside a physical struggle, as the PCs had to simultaneously deal with undead summoned by a creepy device and convince the beloved relative who’d turned it on to shut it off. Tric was often unflappable in our game. He was immune to fear checks and always joking around. But this situation finally made him lose his composure, which in itself was victory enough for me.

Regard: PC Tric met and got to know his half-sister Dame Terwaen over the course of our #Genesys #Wesnoth campaign. As his name suggests, Tric was quite a trickster, making questionable deals and spinning fanciful tales. But he held the earnest and forthright knight in such high regard that he could not bring himself to treat her that way. It surprised me, the GM, that Tric had this tender streak for the sister he hadn’t even known about.

Strain: This is one of the two #Genesys status trackers. Wounds are for physical health; strain covers pretty much everything else: exhaustion, emotion, magical exertion.... It’s easy to spend and easy to recover, but we still find ourselves at the upper limit often. There are so many things to spend advantages on, and choosing strain recovery can feel boring in comparison. That is, until you’re right at your strain threshold, suddenly regretting all your earlier choices.

Loss: Recently, my PC lost a #Genesys social combat. The other PC still had plenty of strain, so the encounter continued. But what did the loss mean, then? I interpreted it as Timon felt overwhelmed by the scope of the problem. He’d naively assumed he could just argue his way to an improved outcome, but it turned out he’d known so very little. Although he wasn’t making rolls contributing to beating the adversary, he stayed in the scene, making checks to educate himself.

Secret: @danielledoesdata and I like to include secrets for oneshot PCs. In our #SWRPG game, everyone knew that one of Kash’s shipmates betrayed everyone and stole the ship. When we played the flashback of the event, I gave everyone except Kash a secret goal (steal the ship for X reason). It was a wild ride, and it wasn’t until session end that they realized what I’d done.

Privilege: This word calls to mind the #Oxventure #BladesInTheDark campaign. I listened to in preparation for running a #Genesys game set in Doskvol. One of their PCs is Barnaby Fortescue III, a charismatic fellow (playbook: Slide) from a wealthy family whose upbringing makes him completely out of touch with the struggles of the rest of his crew. Differences in the socio-economic background of PCs can make for interesting roleplaying conflicts.

Reach: In #Genesys, most melee weapons can only be used against an adversary you’re engaged with. But a few melee weapons have extra reach, like a whip or pike, and some special adversaries (like with tentacles) act the same way. I like to throw these into the game every now and then to shake things up. Sometimes combat starts to feel rote, but when one of the underlying assumptions gets altered, there’s a new opening for creativity.

Charm: This is a skill in #Genesys. When I built my PC Mariah for our #DiceyStories Alpha Centauri campaign, I really thought he was going to go all in for Charm. However, the more we played, the more he really tried to reason with people, rather than sway them with personality, and so Negotiation grew to be his strongest social skill. Over the course of the campaign, he grew from salesman to ambassador.

Poise: In #Genesys, characters have a strain tracker. In a formalized social encounter, if your PC passes their strain threshold, they lose the social combat. There are many ways you could describe that, though—many ways the PC could lose their poise. Maybe they storm out of the room. Maybe they apologize profusely about how they were wrong all along. Maybe they’re overwhelmed at the enormity of the situation, stressed out and frazzled beyond words. You decide how to explain it.
