Blessed Beltane to all who cerebrate the traditional holidays.
Almost on que, we had our first blossom in the pea patch. These were planted about a month ago.
This is the 1st day of summer, for those in the northern hemisphere and for those in the mid-latitudes your garden should be ready for planting. Our location is mild and the bed is protected so we got a head start.

Lettuce seedlings die as soon as I transfer them to net cups. Other plants don't, It's just the lettuces. Any advice? How to strengthen lettuces before transferring or support them right after that? I'm losing dozens for every surviving one.

@holly
you could do what I do and just follow folks that post cool #blender projects. I don't post much yet but I'm working on learning #freecad to make precision assets for blender.
right now I'm documenting an #aquaponics project at #pasca (a community garden in CA USA #sfba )

Could urban farming feed the world?
From back gardens to hi-tech #hydroponics, the future of food doesn’t have to be ruralUrban agriculture (UA) covers everything from hi-tech approaches such as vertical farming and soil-free processes such as #hydroponics, #aeroponics and #aquaponics, to guerrilla gardening on the urban fringe.

Pea progress at Plant and Soul California #PASCA ;
We are taking full advantage of the space for #aquaponics. The area taken up to fencing for the protection the pond has been turned into a veg-garden. A demo of a conventional container garden.
Our late season peas are doing great. From the 11th of Oct to the 24th we planted peas as the trellis fence beds were built and prepared.

TILT: Things I Learned Today; Yesterday Jarad tried something I had been too afraid to try; he moved the pump feed line. It looked like it was brittle from sun damage but it moved just fine. He redirect the water flow back into the pond so they could work on the grow beds and the fish would still get of O2. #aquaponics #lessons #pasca

Big day for aquaponics rebuild. Tim and his team finished cleaning and repositioning the grow beds for pre-phase 0 operations. None of the beds have been planted so there is nothing cleaning the water. We should probably not be feeding the fish until we get some plants back in. #aquaponics #pasca #democracyInAction #garden

The fish pond area lost its big grass shrub but gained a garden bed area under the aisle fence. These wells could become a "picking" garden. Things that can climb on the hog wire; peas, beans, indefinite tomatoes etc. The pond is about 2-3 inches above the surrounding area. The flagstone overhangs the edge to protect the pond liner from the sun.
More to be done in this area. #aquaponics #pasca #democracyInAction #garden -

That was my thought for the day. Now to do something positive to actually help.
I'm peddling by #ebike to help a bunch of folks construct a community #aquaponics system that will demonstrate how we can decentralize and de-carbonise our food supply system and provide more food security to folks where ever they live.
Please feel free to add a comment about what your are doing today that is positive.

What are those holes? Are those from pests?
No, it's expanded clay marks. Turns out that if you naively pack the expanded clay balls in a planting cup for #aquaponics #hydroponics or #aeroponics, the plant can suffocate and die. This is how it looks like when it happens. That's why my book recommended adding some coco fibers or other soft filler material to the cups. I ignored it.

Hey #gardening people
I need some Bacillus thuringiensis to kill of mosquitoes in #aquaponics
Do you think I can get it from the filth that caterpillars produce when they eat my cabbage? Wikipedia says it's in caterpillar gut. Maybe I can just dump that to the aquaponics filters and it will kill off the mosquitoes?

In my first year of #aquaponics, I'm wasting too much of the vegetables. My note to self and the advice to others starting their journey:
Switch the mindset to #abundance. Eat what's growing without waiting too much. Don't worry, there will be even more.

I came to feed the fish in #aquaponics and noticed they behave so weirdly. They were swimming on the surface, with mouth above the water. I tossed the feed in and they didn't even noticed. I panicked, realizing something is wrong. Turned out its an air stone that fell off in the #fish tank.
Two or three minutes after tying the air pipe the fish started to calm down. Still acting weird, slow, but at least not on the surface. 10 minutes later they were eating their dinner. Oof.

@shufei I've been experimenting with #aquaponics recently. It runs on a bucket of water per day. It can actually make a difference when the water becomes scarce. It's also incredibly dense, just 3m² can supply the vegetables for a family of 4.
I made my system according to the instructions from UN's FOA, the book is called Small scale aquaponic food production. It contains 3 designs, step by step DIY with common, often upcycled materials. If your situation would allow you to, look into it. This system was creates specifically to address the problem you're describing.

Okay I didn't expect THIS MUCH 🥬 in #aquaponics.

Now, as #drought hits hard, the point of #aquaponics becomes very apparent. Every single traditionally ground-planted #plant requires more #water daily than the entire #aquaponics garden plus the #fish, and the ground plants still suffer from the drought. Meanwhile the #VerticalGarden just consumes the sunbeams to grow more and more, the #beans are #blooming, the cabbages start to round up and the lettuces are vibrantly green and pithy.

Update: I published the model and the source code on Thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7071122/files
The cups made of PVC pipe break leafs of lettuces. I'll replace them with a rounded-edge, #vaseMode #3dprinted net cups. They fit a 110 mm pipes #VerticalGarden. Let me know if there's anyone interested with the #STL or .scad files.

The classic circulation water pumps used in heating systems are just the best for #aquaponics. We have an #upcycled #pump that worked in our house for 20 years. It stopped this morning. I was carrying watering cans from the filter to the plants (aquaponic equivalent of cpr) until we got a replacement, a virtually identical one, the tech haven't changed. We thought the OG pump is dead, we disassembled it and it turned out it was just limescale! There's nothing to break there, this pump can work another 20 years. We removed the scale, added some vaseline and reassembled the pump. It works again like nothing ever happened! It's amazing.

@RealJournalism I'm not gonna deny that #verticalfarming is being used for green washing and the startups related to that are the worst. Let's not flush the baby with the bath water though. Hydroponics, aquaponics and so on are still a great idea, it's only that it's always that without the social change, #solarpunk is green washing.
As a practicioner of #aquaponics, I see it like this. Vertical farming, if done right is an extremely efficient use of water, and nearly 100% use of the added fertilizer, or as it is in the case of aquaponics, added fish feed nitrogen. If a building was like a cohousing project, with every family on the southern side of the building having a few rows of the nutrient film pipes for their own fitting, it might actually be great. not as a top down approach, but withing a communal effort. At the ground level or below ground, there might be a hidden fish tank and the filters, the feed there doesn't need to be transported up with any elevators but simply pumped up to the roof and then gravitationally distributed to the flats.
The best outcome would be not only locally grown vegetables, but also out-of-market ways of sustaining people. Large system is always more stable than a small ones. Vertical farming is only possible now because we have reliable water and air pumps.
As I said, it's a really good idea, just that it's often presented without any social change, as green washing.

Baby borscht
Update: it's dead :/

What kind of deficiency is it? Phosphorus?
Edit: What I learned so far - it's not phosphorus because younger leaves look worse than the older ones. So it must be one of the immobile nutrients.
Update: the plants have suddenly just started to feel better. The only thing that changed was temperature. I had relatively high pH so maybe it wasn't about the absence of nutrients but lack of their bioavailability, which changes wildly with pH. It lowered with the temperature and the problem just solved itself.

🌊 I want Napitahtaa 🧜🏽♂️ (the Oldman River) to be revived. 🌱🌾 #Lethbridge should be treating runoff meticulously before it (re)enters the river. We could use artificial wetlands & #aquaponics systems. We could include tilapia & water lilies for purification. 🌿🐟 We can ensure safe, clean water, backed by legally protected #riverrights for Napitahtaa & aquatic life. We can design for the future, ecologically braiding technology with nature! 🌍💧 #EcologicalRestoration #CleanWater #ClimateChange

"#Agriculture has been the single biggest driver for #wilderness destruction." (As noted in a previous #video, in the #US home #lawns consume more acreage than agriculture, thus are more #ecologically damaging.)
As also previously noted, #ancient #technologies, like #aquaponics, updated and adapted for our times (e.g. including #solar, for power), can be part of a successful Everything, Everywhere, All at Once #ClimateChange mitigation strategy.

@deadbeefmonster - I mean, being vegan certainly works with being solarpunk, but I don't see why you can't be solarpunk without being vegan.
Raising food animals, such as fish, chickens, quails, rabbits, or even food insects, certainly can be done in sustainable and automated ways.
Raising fish specifically funnels into aquaponics systems that take advantage of efficiencies between fish waste and hydroponic systems.
So. To your question. Yes, solarpunk is possible without veganism.

I'm spending the morning at #ScienceNorth in Sudbury, Canada, with the kids.
The "renovation" of the 2nd floor that they were closed 2 weeks to complete is, sadly, overstated. They literally just flipped the fossils & bugs on the 2nd floor to arrange it to work better with the "bug cafe" display. There currently are no butterflies in the butterfly room (but plenty of chrysalis).
They did add a small #aquaponics setup on the 3rd floor that's worth a look, but they didn't really change much otherwise.
If you were planning to come because of the renovation, hold off until the #Dinosaur exhibit on February 18th.

An outdoor #aquaponics system with everbearing strawberries and #tilapia, using sand as growing media. This greatly reduces evaporation and seems to work well overall. It's also arguably more efficient, as the sand retains water for longer and it doesn't need to cycle as much.
The challenge we've had to overcome is that because it needs to cycle for only 2 minutes every 2 hours, a timer is needed.
Our electricity comes from a crappy modified sine inverter designed for a truck, and it tends to fry digital timers for whatever reason (analog timers work, but only in increments of 15 min), so I finally set up an #arduino microcontroller running off a phone charger as a timer and it finally works. Why doesn't that also get fried? No idea! But so far it's doing fine.#sandponics
