Hello Mastodon!
A quick #Introduction post from me. I'm a freshly-graduated Pākehā public historian researching Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi in #Aotearoa #NewZealand.
I'm deeply interested in systemic change based in kindness, community, inclusion, liberation, and solidarity. I'm particularly keen to connect with other folks similarly involved in #RegenerativeFoodSystems #FoodSovereignty #UrbanFarming #OrganicAgriculture #CommunityDisasterPreparedness #QueerLiberation #IntersectionalFeminism and leftist organising.
I'm an avid reader and amateur artist who believes deeply in the value of human endeavour, critical thought, creativity, and absurdist humour. As a result, I'm an #AntiAI absolutist.
Excited to meet other like-minded folks and learn from your collective wisdom!

Bringing the farm to the people. A grocery store/supermarket built with greenhouses on the roof to provide localmaxxed😉 lettuces to the community.
The supermarket was clearly designed with the farm in mind: skylights throughout the store offer a window into what’s growing above. “The cool thing about producing locally and on a building is you can create synergy within the building,” Leschke said. The greenhouse is heated through the waste heat of cooling aggregates downstairs, and rainwater is the primary source of water for the greenhouse and plant production. Some of the greenhouse is also powered by sustainable energy – primarily solar.

What can I do in response to the #FuelSupply Crisis in #Aotearoa / #NewZealand?
When the Trucks Stop - A community #MutualAid guide for fuel-constrained New Zealand - open for your input!
Mar 19, 2026
"At the time of writing, New Zealand has roughly 20 to 27 days of physical onshore fuel stocks. We import 100% of our refined fuel. The Strait of Hormuz crisis has already triggered Force Majeure declarations from Gulf and Asian suppliers, and the late March escalation has destroyed refining infrastructure that will take years to rebuild, if it is rebuilt at all.
Government will do what government does: triage. Hospitals, police, essential freight corridors. That is appropriate. But it means communities are largely on their own for everything else - food distribution, transport, heating, health access, economic survival. Civil Defence is built for earthquakes and floods, not for a slow-onset nationwide supply chain collapse with no clear end date.
So we wrote a guide.
When the Trucks Stop: Mutual Aid Arrangements for a Fuel-Constrained New Zealand is a practical briefing covering ten areas where communities can organise now to meet basic needs if fuel imports fall to zero or near-zero for weeks or months. It covers food production and distribution, water, energy, transport, health, economic alternatives like #timebanking and local currencies, communication, governance, and the specific needs of vulnerable populations.
It is not theory. It draws on real precedents - #Cuba’s #SpecialPeriod, the #LytteltonTimeBank after the #ChristchurchEarthquake, #PuertoRico’s community #microgrids after #HurricaneMaria, #Ukraine’s rapid #UrbanFarming response. These are places where people faced severe fuel or supply disruption and found ways through it. Not comfortably. Not without suffering. But they made it work, and the common thread in every case was community-level organisation that was already in place, or was built fast, before the worst hit.
The document plans for the worst case whilst hoping for a better outcome. The arrangements it describes cost almost nothing to establish and strengthen communities regardless of whether severe disruption eventuates. If it does, they could prove decisive.
This is a living document and we want your input. The Google Doc version is open for comments. If you know of resources, models, organisations, or practical experience that should be included, please add a comment or get in touch. We will edit contributions into the guide as they come in. This is a community document for community use. It is published under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence - share it, adapt it, translate it, print it out and pin it to the noticeboard at your local dairy.
What you can do this week:
- Read the guide
- Share it with your community group, church, marae, sports club, school community, or neighbourhood
- Call a meeting - even five people is enough
- Contact a local farmer and ask if they’d supply your community directly in a crisis
- Set up a communication channel - a group chat, a phone tree, a physical noticeboard
- Comment on the doc with resources, corrections, or experience we should includeThe time for preparation is before you need it. That time is now."

CW: vertical farms are a scam, oh you are soo right!
I second this sooo much.
There are different reasons why vertical farms are still a thing. They are rooted in technocracy, academia and capitalism*.
- technocracy: technology changed many aspects of our lives, so people tend to think that there are technological solutions for everything. Academia and public funding strongly prefers tech-solutions over system solutions.
- The epistemology of natural sciences (= the idea that everything mechanism can be observed and understood individually). This hampers the ability of natural sciences (including agronomy) to understand the complexity of biological systems. Therefore, scientists shy away from truly interdisciplinary real-world agroecosystem science (cooperating with farmers for #agroecology? what a hassle!) and feel way more comfortable doing lab-experiments. And what is more lab-like than a lab-greenhouse?
Plus, if you resolve the problems of the world, maybe people will call you saviour and this is what the ego of us scientists makes us crave for.- capitalism (or however you want to name this shit): small-scale farming systems don't work so well with neoliberal scaling ideologies. And we have many large capitals pushing into agriculture, either because they are greedy asshats (or simply don't care) or, even worse, because they want to be the good guys: Many pension funds, churches, governments, wealthy individuals with a pinch of bad consciousness are receiving pressure from society to shift towards "sustainable" investments and green their portfolio. Since you can't easily invest in small-scale farmers, "green" tech-solutions are the main remaining possibility to invest in agriculture. And this is why there is an endless stream of money pouring into any start-up that promises to resolve the problems of agriculture.
- Cheap energy and and a lack of understanding what "resilience" and "food sovereignity" means.
Ok, I forgot some other drivers: urbanization (the proportion of people living in megacities continues to grow) and the fact that industrial agriculture has a really shitty environmental record and this is known. So people are looking desperately for easy and market-compatible solutions.
We need more #Solarpunk, folks!*Here we could go deeper and identify also colonialism and patriarchy and so on, but I hope you get my point here.

:black_sparkling_heart: #Introduction #Intro
TL:DR: I'm mostly posting this intro to connect with other Black and BIPOC Anarchists or Anti-authoritarians. Hit me up! :Fire_Panafrican:
Hey, everyone
My partner and I are currently working on a docuseries, @Elememts_of_MA, about the origins, structures, healing ways, and logistics of mutual aid-based organizing. The project isn't exclusively profiling anarchist groups, but it is deeply anti-authoritarian - we're especially staying away from charismatic leaders and celeb "activist" types.
The whole thing is independent - no producers; everything is out of pocket. We've been living out of a van we converted so we could make this happen; which has been amazing. We've been on the road since May Day this year, and have already filmed some solid interviews as far north as Montreal and as far south as Puerto Rico.
However, I'm personally struggling to find Black organizations or collectives that aren't MLM, AADOS, authoritarian, Black Capitalist, nonprofit style groups. Reading and theory groups or media collectives are rad, but I'm really looking for groups that're doing interesting work on the ground (*not food distro*) from an anti-state-nationalist analysis.
Lorenzo and JoNina Irvin will appear in the film, among other radical Black people like Jessica Gordon Nembhard, The Northeast Action Collective in Houston, and Arm the Girls in Oakland. So, I'm not at a complete loss.
But, please send me all the rad groups of Black people you know that are creating long-term, democratic, mutual aid projects in their communities. They do not need to identify as anarchist, but they *cannot* be down with the nation state and have to be doing more than food distro.
Thanks a ton, y'all.
Beyond all that, I'm also really interested in connecting with people to write Star Wars analysis and fan-fiction. I think the galaxy far, far away is an interesting canvas to explore the tensions of autonomous world building vs authoritarian revolutionary movements. If I lived in that universe, I'd no doubt be getting into arguments with the Rebel Alliance.
Thanks for reading this long-winded post.

Does anyone have resources on multilingual, intergenerational, community food gardening? With limited resources to pay for interpreters, any guides, tool kits, curricula, or just plain stories and suggestions based on experience would be very valued!
