Fedi hive mind please help

For my first ~4 years here, all I had to do to read #alttext was hover the word 'ALT' in the image

Sometime in the last month, that stopped working, and nothing I do allows me to see the alt text. I've tried opening the image but... no dice.

I read Mastodon in a browser (safari) on a MacBook Air and all my software is up to date

On of the great joys of Fedi is reading all of the wonderfully decriptive and funny alt text and I'd like it back please.

I came across a Reddit post that described AI in a way I can't stop thinking about:

“Al allows the wealthy to access skills while stripping skilled people of their ability to access wealth.”

I don't think I've ever seen the purpose of Al captured so brutally and accurately.

The two seemed to embody a new type of hard-edged conservative politics that lives at the intersection of Twitter and money, driven by wealthy and successful businessmen who believed their wealth and success would translate into political victories and personal popularity.

The amusing thing is that you can't really win here either way. I've seen this same rhetoric in #altText discussions: don't put URLS, screen readers can't pronounce them as words.

That would be because URLs aren't words. But if a URL is in an image, it should, in my opinion at least, be in the alt text given you're redacting/censoring the information otherwise, good intentions or not. The fact some screen reader users don't know how to deal with the fact a URL isn't words makes them the lowest common denominator but that gets iffy in this particular case. I'd say making this configurable is a sane step here

Until I read the alt text.

Instead of describing the image, it read like a response to an "A.I." prompt to write an image description:

"I can do that, but I don't have the image. Please upload the image so I can write a description."
