It's speaks volumes about how insidious sex worker stigma is than even after experiencing it firsthand, it's still so easy to turn it around and play its consequences as an intrinsic to sex work.
Just imagine the first movements for labour rights had taken the same interpretation of the hideous exploitation and working conditions that motivated them…

[There are other issues with Steinem's work and practices, yes. Some pretty damning. They don't really change any of this beyond making the wording look somewhat overcharitable, though, so I'm sharing anyway. Those issues likely explain the untouched "why". The point, the "what", basically remains the same.]

> In 1963, Gloria Steinem put on a fake name, a fake age, a satin corset, and took a job as a Playboy Bunny.

> Then she took the ears off, went home, and spent the next sixty years telling the world what it means to work in the sex industry.

> She wrote about the wage theft. She wrote about the required gynecological exam and bosses who treated a cocktail waitress’s body as a company asset. All of that was labor journalism, some of it was good.

> But the women she worked beside did not get a byline.

> They got written about.

> Steinem called the assignment a disaster, “personally and professionally.” Editors stopped taking her seriously. Men wouldn’t stop asking about the costume. She was describing exactly what stigma does to a person’s career.

> She championed the “Equality Model,” the “Nordic Model,” the “third way,” whatever the branding was that year. It is the same policy every time: keep the worker’s clients and colleagues illegal, keep her landlord and her driver and her security person prosecutable, and call that liberation.

So, “expert” panel on sex work made of cis white accommodated men whose only knowledge about sex work is from the times they hired a whore..? (And which they'll all deny, so nominally: none whatsoever)

And TALKING WITH SEX WORKERS themselves or their associations (such as SWASH) is not even CONSIDERED..?

Great to know that an “expert panel” is not required to have two working neurons between all its members. 😮‍💨🤦‍♀️

For real, they actually have the galls to claim something like…

I seriously have a hard time believing these people have though twice (or once) the nonsense they're sprouting. 🤦‍♀️

What's more, they're pushing at the same time towards actively making their situation worse:

“protection” and “support” s'yeah. For their own wallets if anything; for sex workers' actual safety, that's not even lip service.

‣ Criminalisation should NEVER be the first response to social and healthcare issues!

3 years ago, the 8 March Principles were launched - to provide a new model on how we see justice.

This International Women's Day, we're calling for care over carceralism, on issues including sex work, abortion, harm reduction, racial justice and poverty.

We advocate for a feminism that is rights-based, not punitive.

‣ Rights not rescue: sex work is work!

Criminalisation, including the criminalisation of clients, is a massive driver of violence against sex workers.

It drives sex work underground, into more danger and stigma, creates barriers to healthcare, housing, and justice.

The 8 March Principles emphasise that consensual sexual activity between adults should never be a matter for the criminal legal system.

Decriminalisation of sex work prioritises the safety, human and labour rights of sex workers.

‣ Criminalisation has never stopped abortions from happening. It only makes them less safe.

Under the 8 March Principles, reproductive and bodily autonomy are recognised as fundamental human rights.

We demand the removal of all punitive barriers to healthcare. When we treat abortion as a crime, we violate the right to health, privacy, and bodily autonomy. It is time for a legal system that trusts individuals to make decisions about their own bodies without the threat of a prison cell.

‣ Support, don't punish! Harm reduction saves lives. Criminalisation destroys them.

The “War on Drugs” is a war on all humans. In practice, it disproportionately impacts women, caregivers and communities already marginalised.

The 8 March Principles advocate for a shift from criminalisation to harm reduction. Drug use is a public health issue, not a criminal one. By redirecting resources from policing to community-supported healthcare and safe consumption services, we can transform our societies for the better.

Lived experience is knowledge.

‣ Carceralism vs. Racial Justice.

The legal system isn't “neutral”.
It disproportionately targets and penalises Black, Brown and racialised communities.

The 8 March Principles remind us that justice cannot be achieved through a system built on systemic bias. We must dismantle the structures of over-policing and invest in safety measures that are led by and for the communities most affected by state violence.

Anti-carceral feminism is essential to realising racial justice.

‣ The Shared Vision - Our Demands:

• Decriminalise abortion, sex work, drug use, and activities associated with poverty.

• Redirect resources from the carceral state to community-led safety, health, and housing.

• Adopt the 8 March Principles globally to ensure that human rights, not moral policing, guide our legal systems.

• Center lived experience as expertise: policies are stronger when shaped by the people most affected. Amplify community voices, recognise peer support, and treat people with dignity and autonomy.

‣ Poverty is not a crime!

In many places, being poor or homeless is effectively treated as a criminal offense.
Laws targeting activities like loitering or sleeping in public punish people for simply existing.

The 8 March Principles state that the criminal law should never be used to address social and economic exclusion.
We cannot jail our way out of poverty, and should never criminalise the means by which the poorest survive.

Resources belong in housing and healthcare, not policing and prisons.

SWAI and other sex workers' rights advocates have welcomed the new research published today by Dr. Lynzi Armstrong, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand that finds that criminalisation harms sex workers in Ireland.

The law is failing to reduce the number of people who purchase sex. However, the Queens University research that reviewed how the law was operating in Northern Ireland said that the law had created an atmosphere of fear that had an impact on the sex worker’s psychological wellbeing.

There is an inherent imbalance of power when the person who is paying for sex has the power to arrest, detain or deport the sx worker. The law has failed, yet again, to deter purchasers and to put the balance of power back in favour of sx workers.

Here is a great post, written by an active sex worker, about why the Nordic Model of client criminalisation is failing sex workers. We have client criminalisation in Ireland and it has not reduced trafficking or exploitation but it has increased violence and stigma.
