A library as a show piece?: Art patrons, a Florentine cortigiana onestà, and an in-house library study in “Arte”

Back in November 2024, I wrote about the anime adaptation of Arte, which is set in Renaissance-era Italy, noting the library scenes in four episodes, noting how in the episode “Courtesan”,  the protagonist, Arte, goes with her master, Leonardo, to the house of Veronica, a courtesan, and they visit her study. While there, she marvels at how impressive the library is, with Veronica saying she needs to entertain her gentleman callers with education, and she offers to let Arte borrow books from her collection, with the latter saying that while standing in her library she can’t view her with anything but respect, saying her respect is for how hard she works, not her profession. It is in this same place that Veronica counsels Arte on her love for her master, Leo, and where Arte realizes that while she will listen to Veronica, she can’t forgive how she treats her clients, as she learns what it truly means to be a prostitute.

In that same post, I also noted the brief library scene in the next episode (the fifth in the series), entitled “Inseparable Bond”, in which Arte goes to the library/study to get Veronica’s advice on speaking to a difficult client, and in the beginning of the eighth episode, entitled “A New Chapter”. In that episode, Arte and Veronica again talk in her study/library, with Veronica saying she couldn’t imagine Florence without Arte, and bidding her farewell as she prepares for her Venice trip. It is implied then that Darcia talks to Veronica afterward about reading (Arte teaches her to read), but not directly shown. In the final episode of the anime adaptation, entitled “Apprentice”, Leo visits Veronica in her study/library, and they talk about the art commission she is offering him, and she is willing to pay him more to make a good artwork (and to buy expensive materials), and she jokes that Arte “she prefers Venice over Florence,” something which likely gets to him, without a doubt. The manga is a bit different.

Veronica is introduced in the fourth chapter, but Arte and Leo do not meet her until the fifth chapter, when she is, again, called a cortigiana. At the time, cortigiana, meaning courtesan, some called them palace ladies, or donna di palazzo. Veronica would undoubtedly be a cortigiana onestà, which one scholar called “the high-­‐class figure of female influence who achieved an unparalleled level of emancipation in the profoundly patriarchal world of Renaissance Italy.” [1] In the fifth chapter, she is described as renting a house with the money she makes as a courtsean (what we would now call a sex worker) and like in the episode “Courtesan” I mentioned earlier, Arte is impressed, and after Veronica declares she has read every book there, Arte is even more in awe. And she even gets to borrow books from the study, with Arte saying she respects Veronica’s hard work.

It is thanks to that fascination she gets her first commission, just as she does in the anime. She admires how intellectual Veronica is and is undoubtedly appreciative when she tells her that the feelings she has for Leo are romantic. Again, this generally follows the anime, including when she sees the terrible conditions that lower-class courtesans work within, and what love can do to someone, a narrative which continues into chapter six. Veronica is the one that tells her she doesn’t “have time” for love. The library itself continues to be shown as somewhere where Veronica shines, above anything else, giving her an allure of someone learned. All the while she treats her clients in a way that Arte (and most) find disreputable. This continues in chapter seven, when she dreads having to give Veronica the painting. An interesting scene, not in the anime, is when Leo comes to meet with Veronica, who says she will pay for the portrait in time, not “like one of those cheap prostitutes.”

The scene goes so far that Leo says that Arte keeps “acting strange,” then she won’t be working at his workshop anymore, leading Veronica to advocate for Arte, saying it would be cruel to fire her, and saying she has taken a liking to Arte. This creates an interesting comparison between Arte, an apprentice barely earning anything, to Veronica, which he finds curious. Later on, Arte realizes she has to set things right, and realizes that Veronica hides “her struggles below her smiles.” She ends up giving her the painting, saying that while she can’t condone how Veronica treats her clients, she is doing it to have an independent life, and works hard in many ways. It is also revealed she is providing for the rest of her family as well!

Even so, Veronica acknowledges the job is “sinful” but she will continue to keep her smile until she dies. Even after all of this, she still wants to advise Arte on anything troubling her, as a friend, and Arte accepts this, as she knows it is important to have someone like her as a friend. In an interesting article I found, one scholar wrote that “during the Italian Renaissance, mythology and art contributed to the increasing popularity of the cortigiana, or courtesan.” That actually does fit with the series, with Veronica as an art patron! The latter is mentioned by Arte to Angelo in the next chapter. In the process of that discussion and others, she breaks through Angelo’s paternalistic attitude that girls need to be protected by men.

Some chapters later, Arte meets Veronica again in the library (at the end of chapter 10), [2] which continues in the next chapter, when she helps Arte negotiate with Ubertino. She reveals that he worked in the wool trade. What she tells Arte allows her to hold her own, teaching her everything from the beginning step by step, including proper posture, speech, and listening skills. She uses to this to appeal to him, especially using her lace art drawings, to pull him in. Veronica’s role in what some, historically, would call an “honored courtesan,” continues to be a major plot point in the story. In fact, Arte visits Veronica again in the beginning of the sixteenth chapter, when she gets a painting from Arte which she wants to keep herself, rather than giving it as a gift to someone. All the while, Veronica says she is expecting things from her, and she feels embarrassed to talk to her, like she is doing something “forbidden.”

It is her running into a Venetian noble afterward and his talking to Veronica, again in the study/library, is what leads Arte to her job in Venice. This is almost exactly what is portrayed in the anime. The same can be said of the eighteenth chapter, when Arte goes to Veronica again, this time asking about a dispute involving the daughter of Leo’s art master (Lusanna), in which she says that disputes over money involving widows is common. She is the one which gives the idea to Arte to approach a person with status and power: the Venetian noble (Mr. Yuri Falier) who wants her to travel to Venice to tutor his cousin, for a six-month period. Even Veronica is surprised that Arte is going so suddenly to Venice in the next chapter, saying it will be a “little lonely” in Florence without her. Again, it is implied that Dacia will go visit Veronica to get books to continue her study of reading and writing.

Unlike in the anime, at the end of the nineteenth chapter, Dacia does visit Veronica, and is very nervous, saying she is only there because she is Arte’s friend. Veronica convinces her to sit and chat down for a bit, but no more is shown, because the story moves onto the next chapter. Nor does it appear in any other chapter, sadly. In fact, there aren’t any library scenes going forward as the story moves to the Venetian arc and there aren’t any scenes in Florence!

In writing this post, I am reminded what Italian history scholar Margaret F. Rosenthal wrote back in November 2018 for Renaissance Quarterly, examining how one cortigiana onestà, also known an “intellectual courtsean,” named Veronica Franco, was restricted in her professional activities, or whether socal forces compelled or contained her “cultivation of a literary identity” in Venetian society, and the maneuvers she adopted when she “obtained entrance into an elite literary circle.” [3] Similarly, another webpage I found comes to mind: cortigiana, like Veronica, enjoyed a “glamorous lifestyle augmented by an education that enabled intellectual interactions in a secular rather than a religious domain.” This was even reflected in paintings like the strongly erotic “Portrait of a Woman known as The Courtesan” by Jacopo Palma il Vecchio in about 1520. [4]

Ultimately, whether the library is a showpiece for Veronica or not, it is also a symbol of how she is a thinking person, an intellectual in her own right. The study/library is a place she can be here own, a place she can be dominant, more than anyone else.

Well, it's been for four days, but today is the book recommendation one. 😅
Nevermind tho, let's get to the point: this absolute jewel of a book. 💎

The work is about as self-describing as it can get: a compilation of life stories and reflections of trans and intersex people in the sex trade. ❣️

All three represent collectives that tend to remain on the sidelines and even actively silenced — never mind their intersection…

This book puts the focus right where it belongs: on the people living at these intersections, on their own voices.

It includes both the good, the bad and the ugly — because even among a relatively limited population, sex work experiences are all over the place, and none actually deserves being left out.

Of course, due to practical limitations, there are certainly going to be some that couldn't make it in —no matter how comprehensive it were, there'd always be— but nevertheless, one thing is certain:
You'll hardly find a comparable collection anywhere. 💞

That usually goes double for trans men.
Sex workers have as much or worse troubles themselves.

So it readily raises the question… What happens with transmasculine sex workers..?

“Wait, is there such a thing.?!”
Oh, yes there is!
Unsurprisingly though, they're on the deep end of the “ignored” spectrum, as their mere existence tends to make EVERY take on sex work from EVERY side shake pretty badly…
So yeah, one doesn't heard much about them.

I'm not gonna spoil you the fun. ^~
The book is exactly what is says on the tin — and its value ought to be more than self-evident.
Plus, it's really just 5£ (.epub), and waaay better than any beer you might buy instead. ;P

Długo zastanawiałem się czy pokazać Wam ten obraz. Czy pisać o nim? Kiedy się wahałem, przypomniałem sobie, co czyni malarstwo Henriego de Toulouse-Lautreca niezwykłym. Czego by mi nigdy nie wybaczył. On pokazywał PRAWDĘ i byłby na mnie wściekły, gdybym ją ukrywał, bo może kogoś zakłuć w oczy. Bo to nie piękno formalne jego dzieł, nie płynne linie i nie atmosfera Moulin Rouge, ale PRAWDA jest najważniejszym osiągnięciem Lautreca. To dzięki niej zapisał się w historii sztuki i w naszych sercach. Dlatego dzisiaj opowiem Wam o „Inspekcji medycznej w domu publicznym przy rue des Moulins” z 1894 roku zdobiącej zbiory National Gallery of Art w Waszyngtonie.
Trafiłem na ten obraz przygotowując się do prezentacji Mocna Kultura Show Live o Lautreku. Trafiłem, bo trzeba się nieco namęczyć, by go znaleźć. Żadna ze stron internetowych o sztuce nie pokazuje go, gdy pisze o Lautreku. „Inspekcja” jest zbyt „fe”, żeby wplatać ją w bajeczne opowieści o malarzu, który „odmalował Belle Epoque”. Szkoda, że niemal nikt spośród prowadzących blogi o sztuce, nie decyduje się wejść w trzewia tamtych czasów. Z drugiej strony rozumiem ten strach. „Ładne” posty lepiej się klikają...
W historii, którą Wam opowiem Belle Epoque będzie mało „belle”. Bo piękna była tylko dla wybranych. Świat pań w szeleszczących sukniach i dżentelmenów w cylindrach funkcjonował obok świata brudu, biedy i przemocy. I to ten drugi był większy. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec jako jedyny pokazał w sztuce to pękniecie społeczeństwa fin-de-siecle’u. „Inspekcja” jest dla mnie niemalże oskarżeniem wobec świata sukni i cylindrów.
💗 W 1892 roku Henri namalował serię obrazów, która do dziś pozostaje, przynajmniej dla mnie, największym arcydziełem czułości i bliskości międzyludzkiej. To 4 obrazy prostytutek z domu publicznego przy rue d'Ambroise, leżących wspólnie w łóżkach. Mówi się, że to obrazy miłości lesbijskiej. Dla mnie to hymny po prostu do miłości jako takiej. Najsłynniejszym z nich jest obraz zatytułowany „Łóżko” (1892, Musee d’Orsay). Namalować je mógł tylko z jednego powodu i namalować mógł je tylko on. O tym za kilka chwil.

A może to... rumieniec wstydu?
„Blondynka” – złożył ręce na przezroczystej halce. „Ruda” jest półnaga. Ma na sobie tylko przejrzysty materiał narzucony na ramiona. Obie nie zdjęły "służbowych", czarnych pończoch. Ale jest jeszcze ktoś.
Za nimi, odwrócona do nas, stoi "Madam" - burdelmama. Ona nie musi przechodzić tej upokarzającej procedury. Kiedyś i owszem, pracowała w ten sposób, ale teraz to ona tu zarządza i od usług seksualnych ma stadko podopiecznych.
Co ciekawe, Lautreka wcale nie interesuje lekarz. Nie ma go na obrazie i gdyby nie tytuł, nie domyślilibyśmy się nawet, w czym uczestniczymy.
Wszystko nakreślone jest zachwycającymi, pewnymi ruchami pędzla. Lautrec obrysował ciała kobiet ciemną obwódką, którą wypełnił koncertem drobnych pociągnięć farbą. Kiedy przyjrzycie się z bliska, zobaczycie, że na tym obrazie nie ma ani jednej plamy barwnej o czystym kolorze! Halka „Blondynki” mieni się różem, fioletem, zielenią i bielą, rzuconymi na niebieski podkład. Czarne pończochy tak naprawdę są wirem ziemistej zieleni, fioletu i granatu.
🖌️ Absolutnie mistrzowskie jest tło - podłoga i ściana toną w rdzawo-rudych uderzeniach pędzla. Szybkie kreskowania tylko sygnalizują istnienie tych powierzchni.
🆓 Co ważne, Lautrec świadomie zostawia niezamalowane duże fragmenty kartonu, na którym powstał obraz. To "wytoczenie wojny" oficjalnemu malarstwu "salonowemu". W wyższych sferach, "porządny" malarz musiał nie tylko dokładnie zamalować całą powierzchnię obrazu, ale powinien ją jeszcze "wylizać" gładkimi pociągnięciami pędzla i pokryć lakierowanym werniksem.
Henri mówi "mam to gdzieś!"❗
✍️ Całość ma charakter szybkiej notatki. Uchwycenie chwili, którego dokonać potrafi tylko prawdziwy mistrz 🏆
Lautrec w niezauważalny sposób wprowadził w ten obraz niepokój. Może tego nie widzicie, ale podświadomie czujecie. Jak to zrobił?
U kogoś innego mogłoby to uchodzić za błąd kompozycyjny, ale nie u niego! Pomyślcie. Gdyby sportretował tylko te dwie kobiety, zachowana byłaby symetria, a obraz tchnąłby wizualnym spokojem. Ale on rozdziela karton na dwie, nierówne części. Osią podziału jest, zdawkowo nakreślone, okno w tle (na którym zdołał trzema kreskami oddać kształt wazonu z kwiatami!). Lewa część w całości zajęta jest przez postać „Blondynki”. W prawej ścisnął „Rudą” i Maman, zaburzając w ten sposób statykę kompozycji.
👏 Delikatny manewr, ale jakże mistrzowski. Dzięki niemu nasza podświadomość, kochająca przecież symetrię jako synonim spokoju, wchodzi w stan lekkiego rozedrgania. Czujemy, że ta scena nie jest fajna. Nie powinno jej nigdy być, a te dziewczyny nie powinny się tam znaleźć. Ale inspekcja jest, one są, a świat nie składa się z lukrowanych ciastek.
💔 Nie ma tu żadnej erotyki. Żadnego "belle". Jest szorstka, ostra jak żyletka prawda o sex-biznesie na Montmartre. Dla mnie, Lautrec do farb dodał emocje: zrozumienie, współodczuwanie i szacunek dla losu tych kobiet.

To jeden z najbardziej szanowanych rodów Francji, dawni władcy wielkich połaci ziem na zachodzie kraju. Był arystokratą. A wyższe sfery wiązał wtedy drastyczny kodeks postępowania. Łańcuch znany jako savoir-vivre, trzymający - jak na smyczy - zwłaszcza kobiety.
📖 Agnieszka Lisak w swojej przeciekawej książce „Życie towarzyskie w XIX wieku” opisuje, co było nieobyczajne. Dama miała być wrażliwa, delikatna, ckliwa, a kiedy trzeba – melancholijna. Powinna na zawołanie zalewać się łzami, dostawać migren i duszności. Nad obyczajnością kobiety z wyższych sfer czuwały posępne matrony, bez litości obgadujące każdy błąd towarzyski.
Kobieta z dobrego domu nie mogła sama chodzić po ulicach, do teatru czy na bal. Pokazanie się w miejscu publicznym wymagało asysty męża, kogoś z krewnych lub służącej. Uniesienie sukni tak, by odsłaniała bucik damy traktowano jak zachowanie pornograficzne.
Nad wszystkim wisiał miecz „zszargania reputacji” – swoim cięciem wykluczający z towarzystwa.
😬 Jak głęboki był absurd tych zasad? Kodeks przewidywał, że na przykład na balu, córka nie mogła sama wyjść z sali balowej i pójść do bufetu. Lisek cytuje fragment z polskiego poradnika „Pani domu” M. Rościszewskiego z 1904 (!) roku, skierowany do młodych dam: „Oczyma nie strzelaj po stronach; nie spoglądaj na nikogo ukosem, ani okiem pogardzającym i pysznym, a gdy z kim mówisz, nie wpatruj mu się w twarz, lecz niżej ku ziemi”. Czy teraz rozumiecie jaką rewolucją, wstrząsem dla towarzystwa, były obrazy z burdeli malowane przez hrabiego de Toulouse-Lautrec? Jak ogromnie odważny był Henri i jak bardzo pogardzał towarzyskim bagienkiem malując kobiety, o których samo wspomnienie w wyższych sferach było grubym nietaktem?
👨‍🎨 Pierwsze obrazy z prostytutkami namalował w 1886 roku gdy miał 22 lata. Wtedy zrozumiał ostatecznie, że nigdy nie doczeka się „normalnej” miłości. Pokraczny karzeł z bulwiastym nosem i wargami wielkimi jak balony, nieustannie śliniący się ze zdeformowanej szczęki nie mógł liczyć na uczucie „prawdziwej damy”. Wykonał więc krok, po którym nie było powrotu. I nigdy go zresztą nie szukał.
📰 1886 był ważnym rokiem, bo również wtedy powstały jego pierwsze rysunki na zamówienie prasy paryskiej. Studiował wtedy w pracowni Fernanda Cormona z Louisem Anquetinem, Emile’m Bernardem i Vincentem van Goghiem. Ta trójka, wraz z innymi studentami – Francisco Gauzim i Henrim Rachou, tworzyła zgraną paczkę przyjaciół. No może akurat Vincent był nieco mniej zgrany, ale on generalnie miał trudności ze zgrywaniem się z kimkolwiek.
💃👩‍🎤 Na Montmartre rodziły się w tym czasie pierwsze cafe-concerts vel cafes-chantants. Wbrew pozorom nie przy kawie, ale winie i absyncie, tłoczyły się tam tłumy słuchającew zjawiskowych pieśniarek jak Yvette Guilbert czy patrząc na narodziny le kadril realistique. Ten taniec znamy dziś, nieco błędnie, jako kankan. Najsłynniejszymi cafe-concerts były Le Chat Noir Adolphe’a Salisa i jego następca, Mirliton Aristide’a Bruanta.
🔝 Henri wstępował właśnie na top paryskiej sztuki, chociaż rakieta z napisem „Toulouse-Lautrec” wystartuje dopiero w 1891 roku. Wtedy stworzy słynny plakat promujący Moulin Rouge. On uczyni go sławnym w całej Francji. Znienawidzonym i kochanym zarazem.
Malując dziewczyny z domów publicznych Henri odkrył prawdę, która poraziła go jak piorun. Jak pisze jego biografka Julia Frey, zrozumiał, że prostytutki są bardziej naturalne, niż płatne modelki z pracowni, bo „mniej skupiają się na swoim wyglądzie i są dużo swobodniejsze”. Są prawdziwsze.
Gdy powstawała nasza „Inspekcja” był już innym człowiekiem niż w 1886 roku. Na Montmartre nie było nikogo, kto nie znałby Lautreka. Malował największe sławy świata kabaretów, miał swoich marszandów i… pił. Na umór. Codziennie.😢
Żaden sukces i żadna przyjaźń nie mogły go powstrzymać. Nawet nowa wielka fascynacja – litografia. W 1891 zaczął tworzyć litografie i od razu okazał się geniuszem tej zapomnianej ówcześnie techniki. 26-letni artysta stworzył nowy styl, który niedługo stanie się podwaliną dla współczesnego plakatu.
📰 Po pierwszej wystawie indywidualnej w galerii Boussod et Valadon posypały się recenzje. Gazeta „Le Temps” pisała: „Jest pan bezlitosny wobec bliźnich i cyniczny. Odkrywa pan wrzody na ciele tego świata. Bardzo to śmiałe”. Gustave Geffroy w „La Justice” gromił krytyków odsądzających Lautreka od czci i wiary: „Wnikliwość jego obserwacji, widzenia tego, co pokazuje jako niezasługujące na litość, to opowiedzenie się za pięknem życia”. Roger Marx w „La Rapida” notował: „Dociekliwa analiza i precyzja wyrazu, okrutna, nieubłagana zdolność obserwacji”. Taki jest nasz dzisiejszy obraz.
👑 Przez moment wydawało się, że wróci na salony wyższych sfer. W 1893 roku zaprzyjaźnił się z polskimi Żydami Alexandre i Thadee Natansonami. Wydawali oni pismo „La Revue Blanche”, które miało wielkie znaczenie dla kształtowania się sztuki. Dodatkowo Thadee był mężem Misi Natanson-Godebskiej, która prowadziła jeden z najsłynniejszych salonów artystycznych Paryża. Lautrec bywał tam, bawił się, ale szybko zrozumiał, że to nie jego miejsce. Jego świat był już gdzie indziej.
I tu dochodzimy do wyjaśnienia, dlaczego tylko on mógł namalować „Łóżko” i „Inspekcję”.
Kobiety z domów publicznych, w których bywał, zaakceptowały go jako kogoś swojego. „Towarzystwu” trudno byłoby to sobie wyobrazić, ale w latach 90-tych zaczął przeprowadzać się na długie tygodnie do burdeli. Od „maman” – szefowej przybytku, dostawał własny pokój i żył życiem pracujących tam kobiet. Z czasem zaczynały traktować go jako naturalną część ich życia. Pozwalały obserwować się przy codziennych czynnościach, czasem zwierzały się i wypłakiwały mu na ramieniu. Henri żadnej z nich nie osądzał i nie traktował z góry. W jakiś dziwny sposób darzył je ciepłem i uczuciem. Korzystał też z ich usług, żeby nie było tu opowieści romantycznej jak uderzenie Hanki Mostowiak w kartony.
W domach publicznych czuł się na swoim miejscu. Tam odnajdywał spokój i czuł się członkiem tej społeczności. Tak jak dziewczyny z „Perroquet Gris” czy rue des Moulins, czuł się człowiekiem wyrzuconym na margines społeczeństwa. Odrzuconym przez „normalnych”. One z racji zawodu, on z racji wyglądu. Nie zgadzał się też na jedno – hipokryzję, która pozwalała piętnować kobiety z domów publicznych, przez ludzi, którzy korzystali z ich usług. Od czasów Lautreca niewiele się zmieniło. Dlaczego? Przez 80 lat „Inspekcję” dopuszczono tylko czterokrotnie na wystawy poświęcone Lautrekowi. Raz w Philadelphia Museum of Art i trzy razy w muzeum, do którego należy, National Gallery of Art w Waszyngtonie. Hipokryzja żyje i ma się dobrze.
Auguste Renoir powiedział o obrazach Lautreca: „Często są pornograficzne, ale zawsze przeraźliwie smutne”. Nie zgodzę się z tym zdaniem.
Obrazy Henriego są przeraźliwie prawdziwe, a prawda to blask.
