When I comment on sex work-related news, it usually gets ranty fast, and with good reason…

So, particularly after the recent stream of much worse news, I'm highlighting a lighter one:

To be clear, there IS whorephobia on the article. After all, it's a first contact (not an analysis) with prostitution and it's context around the 16th century's Venice and focusing on the upper-class one… the were severe prejudices at the time, and they are plastered pretty plainly.

The article does remarkably steer away of the pity porn so usual when talking about these things; arguably though it does go a little too far and into glamourizing its topics, which is also… not ideal, when said topics are class and specifically sex work.

Nevertheless, it serves as a nice enough intro to the social context, it's not a hard read, and as noted, does avoid one set of stigmatization sources — all of which very welcome.

Trans people were already sidelined by the “““respectable””” LG(B?) community at the time (as soon as the next year's anniversary, in fact), partly for trans, partly for racialized, partly for poor, partly because of sex work. They just didn't offer the “right image”.
And they still stayed at the front.

But after that, seeing parts of the trans community nowadays stroking their own privileges and kicking on sex work, or even reinforcing sexist frames…
Yeah, disappointing it is. Also downright nauseating.

I'm not gonna wish anyone to have to recourse to survival sex work (or any survival work, for that matter), but if current trends continue and the fickle illusion of social respectability that has been built around trans identities finishes collapsing, some people are bound to a very, very rude awakening… :/
