Interesting in its own abstract way. Of course rigid rules give their enforcers (formally appointed or not) too much power and support and amplify inequalities. (Big part of the push behind full decriminalization of #SexWork, abortion, drugs, etc.). Surely that's just an externality like the economists say.

It's honestly a pity the article leans so damn hard into victimization and ‘pity porn’…
Let's take a look at (some of) what it's exposing, shall we?
• The ripple effects of cutting international aid funds.
• The intrinsic limitations of assistentialist approaches.
• The importance of support networks and their active role down to plain survival.
• The LGBTIQAfobia in the region, particularly transfobia, and some of its effects.
• Some results of stigma, discrimination and criminalization (to note a few, actively discouraging from the few remaining health resources, inability to report violences, increased isolation…).
• The simple fact that sex work is a survival strategy. And also work (in terrible conditions).
• That there is internalized stigma even among sex workers themselves.
• The truth of the “you're closer to be homeless/disowned/HIV-positive/a sex worker/[introduce pretty much any term referring to a marginalized community here] than to be a billionaire” saying(s).
• Doesn't even get close to stating it (or even touching the topic), but: why the “end demand” models are incapable of achieving their alleged purpose, even if the “exit services” they claim to offer worked [they never once have] — funding dries up, those programmes disappear, the accompanying laws making sex work more precarious and dangerous, stay.
So, what does the article choose to focus on, instead..?
On the violence, the more the better. On the "I don't want to do this". To a lesser but still significant extent, on the "But this wasn't mean to happen to ME!" (yay for the not-so-covert whorefobia… 🙄).The fact that the violence is reinforced by the absolute lack of legal support, by stigma and LGBTIQAfobia, by the health services, by the police being complicit rather than any help, and so many others — those details are barely even mentioned in passing, and certainly not linked together or posed as factors of the violence.
(After all, “sex work is violence”, right? What could be the point of distinguishing it for the actual lived violence..? 🤦♀️)And of course, when one knows those are the circumstances, who'd WANT the work? If one knows that taking the work makes you an acceptable target for all the violence (and doubly so for LGBTI people), who'd take it if not under extreme necessity..?
But nah, better to implicitly just blame it all on the work itself. 😮💨Frankly, seems like a wasted opportunity. There's so much to comment on and reflect there, and hardly touches any of it. The idea of highlighting the ripples of funding cuts is good, bringing forward a voice having lived it is good — turning her into a helpless victim in need of saving, sure as hell ain't.
Even more so when it's blatantly clear she isn't: there ate no saviors, so she wouldn't be alive to tell the story in that case.
This, however, it's not acknowledged.That, I think, is the most sickening part.
Sigh.
Well, end rant.
Guess it might be better to just leave with the positive points above, but tbh you almost have to actively look for them to find them. :/
