Porn is a topic we tend to avoid talking about – whether it be at school, work or around the dinner table.
But in Australia, roughly three-quarters of men (76%) and more than one-third of women (41%) report to have looked at pornographic material in the past year.
And among Australians aged 15-20, more than half (54%) of young men and one in seven (14%) young women report accessing porn weekly.
You may have heard the term “porn addiction” used to describe the excessive consumption of porn, in ways that disrupt a person’s life or the lives of those around them.
But is porn actually addictive? Current research suggests the answer is rather complicated.
The debate about porn
For many people, watching porn is a fairly typical behaviour. Others, however, consider it to be problematic.
A 2025 inquiry examined the effects of porn on people’s mental, emotional and physical health. It concluded porn is not inherently harmful. It may, however, impact people differently depending on what it depicts, who consumes it and how it is consumed.
Excessive porn use may become a problem if it affects how a person functions in daily life. To describe this, researchers and clinicians use the term problematic porn use. This refers to the inability to control one’s porn consumption despite repeated attempts to do so, and experiencing negative consequences as a result.
A global survey found 3%–15% of people potentially experience problematic porn use. And these difficulties are generally more common among men.
What causes it?
Problematic porn use is a complex issue and is influenced by various factors. These include pre-existing neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions, such as ADHD or depression. Certain personality traits such as impulsivity, low self-control and novelty seeking may also contribute.
Social and cultural factors such as low relationship satisfaction, social isolation and religious influences are also relevant. And people who feel lonely or lack emotional support are more at risk of developing this issue.
For many people with problematic porn use, consuming porn can become a vicious cycle that draws attention away from their relationships and daily responsibilities. For example, a person’s excessive porn use could see them lose their job due to poor performance. They may also become isolated from friends and family. These consequences often worsen their mental health and daily functioning, making it even harder to control their porn consumption.
People can experience problematic porn use in different ways. Researchers have suggested several key presentations including:
• compulsivity, defined as a strong, hard-to-resist urge for porn, particularly to relieve built-up tension or anxiety
•• impulsivity, which leads to speedy, spontaneous engagements with porn without considering consequences, for instance using porn on a work computer
•• emotional dysregulation, when a person turns to porn to manage difficult emotions such as stress, boredom or loneliness
•• addiction-like experiences, such as having intense cravings and/or needing more extreme content to feel satisfied.
•Is porn actually addictive?
Problematic porn use is currently considered a type of compulsive sexual behaviour disorder. Such disorders are characterised by an inability to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses for at least six months, to the point of neglecting daily responsibilities.
At this stage, problematic porn use is not formally recognised as an addiction. It is not included as an addiction in the WHO’s International Classification of Diseases or the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Illnesses, two international systems used to define and diagnose medical conditions.
Importantly, research on this topic has grown dramatically since these manuals came out. Evidence, including a recent international review, suggests problematic porn use can in some cases function like an addiction.
There are mounting calls to classify problematic porn use as a behavioural addiction, which would put it in the same category as other addictive online behaviours, such as gambling and gaming disorders. These behaviours light up similar areas of the brain’s reward system. However, activities such as drinking water trigger a similar response, so it’s important to consider this research in context.
The recent landmark social media addiction trial in the United States ruled that tech giants Meta and Google had engineered their platforms to be intentionally addictive. Similar design components are also used on many popular tube-sites – free platforms where porn videos are uploaded and watched. Modern internet porn offers unlimited access to sexual novelty by allowing people to “tab-switch” and continually seek new content during so-called “binges”. Research shows both behaviours may be risk factors for problematic porn use.
However, there is reason to be cautious about describing problematic porn use as an addiction. Research consistently shows many people self-identify as being addicted to porn, even if their use is infrequent and generally under control. This is due to moral incongruence, which is when a person holds strong moral or religious beliefs against pornography, but continues to use it. This can cause significant distress or a strong sense of feeling addicted, even with controlled use, and has been linked to several underlying mental health conditions.
What you can do
If you or a loved one feels like your porn use is problematic, here are some practical steps you can take.
• unpack what’s driving this behaviour to ensure you get the right treatment. For example, is it a genuine loss of control, moral conflicts about porn use and/or underlying conditions such as depression?
•• contact a qualified professional who specialises in problematic porn use. Psychologists can assess whether your consumption is more compulsive, impulsive or addiction-like. They can suggest evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Sexologists and sex therapists can also help you understand how you engage with porn and develop healthier behaviours
•• be aware there is a significant amount of misinformation in this space, including from unqualified therapists and coaches who do not use evidence-based approaches
•• broach any conversation about porn use with respect and care, as this topic can carry strong feelings of shame, fear or guilt.

Who REALLY Watches Porn? 4 Surprising Truths

These assumptions, however, are largely based on older research that relied on self-report surveys, a method notoriously prone to bias when dealing with a stigmatized topic. What happens when you set aside what people say they do and instead look at what they actually do online?
A massive new study did just that. Using objective, anonymized web-tracking data from 1,933 individuals across five countries, researchers identified 392 pornography consumers, providing one of the most accurate and nuanced portraits of this group to date.
The results challenge many deeply held beliefs about age, gender, politics, and online behavior.
This article distills the four most counter-intuitive truths from this groundbreaking research, revealing a reality that is far more complex and fascinating than the stereotypes suggest.
1. Viewers Are Creatures of Habit, Not Explorers
The internet seems to offer an endless buffet of adult content, leading to the belief that pornography use is a relentless quest for novelty. The data, however, paints a picture not of explorers, but of creatures of habit.
The study found that consumption is highly concentrated on a few dominant platforms, such as Pornhub, Xvideos, and Xhamster.
The most surprising statistic revealed a strong sense of brand loyalty and routine. Approximately 46% of users visited only a single, unique adult website during the entire three-month study period.
This behavior suggests that for nearly half of all viewers, pornography is less about exploration and more about visiting a familiar, trusted source.

Objective tracking reveals that pornography consumption is common across all age groups. It goes from young adulthood well into the 60s and beyond.
The data shows a clear trend, with consumption peaking among people in their 30s before seeing its most pronounced decline after age 60.
However, the study’s key takeaway is that these variations between most adult age groups aren’t large enough to be statistically significant. This means, for the most part, engagement remains remarkably stable throughout adulthood.

3. Political Ideology is Surprisingly Irrelevant
In a hyper-partisan world, it’s easy to assume our media habits, even private ones, fall along political lines. But when it comes to pornography, a person’s political ideology is surprisingly irrelevant.
When researchers compared who watches porn and non-watchers based on their self-reported political ideology on a scale from left to right, they found no statistically significant difference between the two groups.
In simple terms, knowing a person’s political leaning gives you no predictive power in guessing whether or not they consume pornography. The user base is ideologically diverse and spans the entire political spectrum.
But the research did uncover an interesting twist. While personal ideology didn’t matter, media consumption habits showed a small but statistically significant difference. The study found pornography users tended to have slightly more centrist and balanced partisan media diets compared to non-users.

Digging into the web-tracking data revealed crucial nuances, showing female engagement is “more substantial than previously estimated” and challenging the idea of pornography as an exclusively male domain. This was especially clear when looking at cross-country variations.
In Spain, for example, women constitute nearly 30% of pornography users.
The study hypothesizes this may be linked to the country’s significant progress in gender equality, such as being the first nation to create a Ministry of Equality in 2004 and the third to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005, suggesting cultural shifts can directly influence female consumption patterns.
The study also produced fascinating data on same-sex content.
It found that 16.5% of male users watched gay pornography. A figure significantly higher than the 5-10% of men who typically identify as gay or bisexual in surveys.
This complexity extends to lesbian content, which the study found was consumed by a higher percentage of male users (15.4%) than female users (9.4%), further challenging simple assumptions about consumption, gender, and sexual orientation.

The objective, behavioral data from this study makes one thing clear: the reality of pornography consumption is far more complex, habitual, and ideologically diverse than common stereotypes suggest.

Pornhub’s WOTY
Readers of this blog are probably familiar with the various Word of the Year (WOTY) competitions run by dictionaries and linguistic organizations. But they may not know that the site Pornhub.com has its own WOTY project of sorts. Each year Pornhub publishes a statistical analysis of its users, and in addition to providing global demographic data about who uses the site and when, it publishes the top and trending search terms used on it.

Moreover, one may not want to visit this link on a work computer, as your IT department may notify your boss that you’ve visited Pornhub.]
Hentai, sexually explicit cartoons in the style of Japanese manga, was the site’s no.1 search term again this year, with MILF, an acronym for a mom I’d like to fuck, also holding position at no.2. Demonstrating Pornhub’s global reach is the no.3 term, Pinay, referring to a Filipina, climbing from no.5 last year. On Pornhubgay.com, the top three terms remained unchanged from last year: twink, a man of youthful and slim appearance, at no.1, anime at no.2, and Pinay’s masculine counterpart Pinoy at no.3.
But the real interest is in what terms trended this past year, search terms that reflected other societal trends. The biggest trend clocked by Pornhub was demure, inspired by a 2 August TikTok viral video in which creator Jools Lebron described her hair and makeup as “very demure.” Lebron’s TikTok video was not overtly sexual, much less pornographic, but evidently it kicked off a trend in Pornhub searches, which included demure itself (+133%), mindful pleasure (+112%), and mindful JOI (+87%). JOI being an initialism for jerk-off instructions, a video in which a performer addresses the viewer, giving instructions on how to pleasure themselves and describing, and sometimes performing, various sexual acts themselves.
The tradwife phenomenon and the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives TV show also spawned a Pornhub trend: Mormon threesome (+122%), Mormon sex (+92%), tradwife (+72%), and Mormon wife (+71%). All this while Pornhub is largely blocked in Utah.
People were evidently lusting after Olympic athletes, too. In the third quarter of the year, corresponding to the Paris Olympics, the trending terms included: vollyball [sic] (+165%), swimmer (+101%), and the generic athlete (+88%).
In an American Dialect Society/Pornhub WOTY crossover, the phrase hawk tuah, coined in a viral YouTube video in which a woman used it describe spitting on a penis during oral sex, was one of the nominees for the ADS WOTY in the Most Fun While It Lasted category. On Pornhub, hawk tuah got over ten million searches, and spit on dick rose +233%.
One of the more fun analyses that Pornhub does is a map that shows for each US state the search term that is most popular relative to the other states. So, furry is relatively popular in Oregon, pee takes the honors for Wisconsin, friends mom in California, footjob in Colorado, anal dildo in Alaska, and facesitting in Massachusetts.
Pornhub has a global reach, and it also publishes the most popular search terms for the top twenty countries. In the United States, hentai was the most popular term, climbing from no.3 last year, Latina took second, climbing from no.4, and MILF slipped one spot from no.2 to no.3. In France, the top three search terms remained unchanged. Unsurprisingly, francaise was no.1, but foreign terms challenged the country’s linguistic nationalism, with hentai and MILF coming in second and third, respectively. In the Philippines, Pinay and Pinoy unsurprisingly took the top two spots, with Japanese coming in third, all unchanged from last year. In Mexico, it was hentai and lesbianas, unchanged in the top two spots, with culonas (big ass) displacing MILF at no.3. And in the United Kingdom, MILF and lesbian continued to hold the top two spots, but British moved up two places, displacing Indian. British has been moving up the search rankings in recent years, perhaps reflecting some kind of post-Brexit xenophobia.
But overall, when one looks at the top search terms in the twenty countries, one is struck by how similar the lists are. Evidently tastes in porn genres do not vary all that much around the world. What is interesting, however, is which non-anglophone countries tend to use English terms and which use their native tongues. English terms dominate in the Philippines, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands. Egypt has a mix of English and Arabic search terms. While France, Japan, Ukraine, Brazil, and Spanish-speaking countries tend to search in their native languages.
All of this leads one to ask, is porn a universal language, a lingua franca that unites rather than divides? Probably not, but with everything else going on in the world, it may provide some kind of common ground.
