I’m specifically arguing that Mastodon-branded generalist instances should not host pornography. I am also talking about preventing pornography from reaching people who did not deliberately opt into it by joining, following, or browsing adult-oriented servers and accounts.
A free society can defend sexual freedom while still expecting explicit adult-only content to be properly contained.

It was me who wrote the posts about #pornography, #moderation, #mastodon, and the #fediverse.
I stand by my policy arguments, but I accept that one phrase was badly chosen. I should have referred to pornography generally, not homosexual pornography specifically.
I am not saying that gay people or gay sexual content uniquely endanger anyone. That is not what I believe.
My view is that Mastodon-branded generalist instances such as mastodon.social, mastodon.online and mastodon.world should not host pornography, regardless of orientation, and should do more to prevent unexpected exposure to pornographic material federated from elsewhere.
Content warnings and hashtags frequently are not being used, notably when posts are federated from other instances where they don't apply the same rules as mastodon.social and mastodon.online.
So pornography without any obfuscation can reach people - including minors - who did not knowingly opt into adult content.
Pornography can be hosted on other servers in the Fediverse, but I don't believe it should be on servers that are operated by the Mastodon project, or that are likely to be perceived by newcomers as Mastodon-branded entry points.
Burnout Café’s server rules show the kind of lower-shock, non-pornographic general space I am trying to maintain.
I support LGBT+ people living openly, safely, and equally.
My argument is about pornography policy on major Mastodon entry-point instances, not about opposing LGBT+ rights or expression.
People are free to disagree with me. I am also free to argue for stricter moderation.
I am happy to discuss the actual policy issues: consent, containment, age-safety, public timelines, federation, and the role of Mastodon-branded generalist instances.
I am not interested in turning the debate into a trial of motives.

Ugh because of this notif, I remember why that post bothered me so much.
It's just that I hope people are more honest with themselves without pretending to be something they're not. For instance: you're having problems with exercising sovereignty and control simultaneously, so you universalise your problems, assume everyone else shares your grievances, and posture benevolence by appealing to certain traditional values you think everyone shares.
You could have just said you hate what you see and that shit makes you uncomfortable.
Or that photograph of two beautiful men having more action than you ever did your whole life made you want to hurl.
Just don't make it about children, when it's just about your miserable, toxic ass.
What children? Whose? Yours? Why are they here? What exactly are you doing as their parent letting them be here?
And what's even wilder to me is the fucking audacity to parrot fascist logic here of all places. As an Indonesian, let me tell you something many of you must've already known…
Some of the reasons why authoritarianism and/or fascism are well-received by many, even those who claim to know better, are 1) they think they know better, 2) they appeal to certain traditional values (often family), 3) they attack the pain points of traditional family values, 4) they blur the boundaries between the state and family, so the active ruler will easily target a random person or a group to be the common enemy to unite the people and to appear to be their saviour.
Their rhetoric often starts with something along the lines of "What about the children?!" or "What about our family?!" when they know jackshit about kids and their own family; because as adults, we assume we know ourselves and our kids better than kids do, and men of the house assign themselves as protectors of the family (pfft, I know).
In Islam, men are the providers in both financial (zahir) and emotional (batin) lol obv; in terms of "protection", we should protect each other, but men these days think that only women need protection, and don't think they themselves are also prone to being targeted and victimised by other men who hold more power than they do. Mfks think in a vacuum ffs, men are embarrassing. So anyways—
Of course these things don't need to be taught again, considering many of you are here because of something related to authoritarianism of some kind, at least remotely.
Just thought there should be a reminder every once in a while from a hijabi who has seen many forms of paternalism online and offline by locals and Westerners alike, to the extreme degree, historically and live. And they all start from an ordinary, seemingly righteous concern about the safety of children, family, women, about our peace and harmony… fuck off, it's about consolidating power. That "concern" is an authoritarian control testing the water.
