I found out second-hand that the platform my old R&D team had been building was scrapped. The tooling meant to carry a hundred-odd engineers off a PHP monolith and onto Go services, gone. They kept the monolith.
It stung, and I'd love to say all of the sting was aimed at whoever made the call. The longer I chewed on it, the more it pointed back at me.
That team's work was scaffolding. It's in every progress photo of a building site and nobody looks at it once. It costs money every week it stays up, it isn't what anybody ordered, and it's the obvious thing to take down when the budget gets tight.
Their value only ever showed up in someone else's numbers. Turning "this will make the whole department faster" into a number the business already cared about was my job as chief architect, and I didn't do it. "It'll be obvious later" is more of a hope than a case.
Given my time again, I'd run a second stream: pick a few systems that are really hurting, measure them, rebuild them on the unfinished platform, measure again. One finished room you can walk a stakeholder into.

Kyiv mayor shares photos of damage to Pivdennyi Bridge
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has posted several photos showing the damage caused by a Russian missile strike on the Pivdennyi Bridge in the Ukrainian capital.

This one is a bit of a #piecemeal. I painted a couple of wooden boards a couple of years ago but wasn’t all that happy with them at the time. I took some photos and then painted over the boards.
Some time later I came across the photo again and started fiddling with it on #Procreate. So this is #AcrylicPaint / #DigitalArt and I do very much identify with her #FacialExpression. -

So, I mentioned it before, but where my wife is a substitute teacher, apparently people bring energy drinks in for teachers. This time, my wife brought home an Alani Nu "Witch's Brew" that was laying around.
No, for the record, generally speaking Alani's are not really my thing. I like Energy Drinks, but not these as much most of the time.
How about Witch's Brew? If you know what a sour apple Jolly Rancher tastes like - imagine that in liquid form with subtle notes of caramel. That's what it tastes like.
It's not bad, but not my thing. Would drink again if offered, but wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

I spent yesterday afternoon/evening improving the software for the CFM Picocalc... using the software itself, without my laptop. Things I have learned or been reminded of:
My line editor is adequate but not amazing for making complex source code changes. Also, it would sometimes replace the first byte of each line with the last byte, which turned out to be an interaction with...the display driver? (This is happening in the photo below)
When you have implemented everything from the CPU to the fonts, hitting a bug like "sometimes the lowercase g is glitchy" does not give you a lot of hints on where to start looking, except that it's definitely your fault 😆
Anyway, here's me debugging the line editor on BART. This system has officially been operated at the bottom of the Bay now.
