Daily Inspiration: "Fear is a liar. Choose courage instead." - Futurist Jim Carroll
Today I want to write about resilience - why it's important, and why chasing resilience instead of giving in to fear is too important.
To do that, though, I need to tell you how I got to today's quote. I quite like it!
I've been spending quite a bit of time using Google Notebook LLM - it's become apparent to me that it's one of the best tools to use to go through vast volumes of information and synthesize useful results. One thing I've been doing is to use it to query and structure insight from the over 3,000 Daily Inspiration posts I've written since 2016.
The tool is providing me with all kinds of useful data and insight into my very own insight. For example, I asked it what I had to say about the topic of resilience, which I think is a very important attribute in the very complex days ahead. The answer seemed reasonably intelligent.
---
Carroll believes people should never let a setback set them back and focus on moving forward. He stresses the importance of using the words that define the attitude needed to go in the right direction, such as:
Perseverance
Determination
Fortitude
Persistence
Resolve
----
I couldn't have said it better myself! (-;
Going further, I then asked myself to generate 10 inspirational posts from my material. The response I got was somewhat magical:
---
Here are 10 resilience quotes, inspired by Jim Carroll's perspective, using 10 words or less.
Guard your optimism, battle negativity.
Broken today, stronger tomorrow. Keep going.
Embrace change, find your faster self.
Resilience: Courage to bounce back, always.
Turn setbacks into fuel for the future.
Don't just recover, reinvent and rise.
Persistence: The art of never giving up.
Find strength in what you have, not losses.
Embrace uncertainty, it breeds opportunity.
Fear is a liar. Choose courage instead.----
That's pretty good! I could have used any one of these, but I really liked the last one.#CourageOverFear #ChooseCourage #Resilience #FaceChallenges #StayPositive #OvercomeFear #EmbraceChange #KeepGoing #GrowthMindset #UnlockPotential

"It's always good to be way ahead of your time!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
(Such as talking about artificial intelligence on your own radio show in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 42 years ago!)
So everyone seems to be working with Claude Code and Claude Cowork, so I had to jump in. (If you don't know what they are, find out fast and jump right in.) (Everyone is also talking about Clawdbot et al, and I'm jumping into that soon, too!)
I needed a project to explore what it can do.
I found one. I'm having fun.
And I have two reactions to Claude Cowork.
HOLY WOW! If you aren't learning how to use it, do so. Fast!
And, I was really quite ahead of the time, a lot of the time.
One thing that has made its way into this project is my 1984 radio series, which ran on CHNS in Halifax, Nova Scotia, back when I was a young 25-year-old accountant busy exploring the edges of the forthcoming technological revolution.
It was called Micro Minute. And it was ahead of its time. And I have the audio! Give it a listen!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-E36Mpl5_g
Not only that, but I have the original memos that describe the series in depth, as we tried to get other offices in the firm in which I worked interested in it.
Check out show number 17! I'm talking about artificial intelligence - 42 years ago. And nailed it!

#FF's #Aras25 review seems to have concluded that it was all the fault of the politically clueless #JimGavin that the #FiannaFail leadership bullied the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party to adopt a politically clueless candidate for the presidency. 🙄
Glad we cleared that up. 😂🤣
Great reporting by Mícheál Lehane and others at https://www.rte.ie/news/politics/2025/1216/1549211-fianna-fail-review/

2.346 #JimGavins have elapsed since #FiannaFail started its inquiry into its #Aras25 presidential election disaster. Now #FF is struggling to keep a lid on rumours that the report blames both #JackChambers and Micheál Martin's chief of staff for covering up #JimGavin's dirty secret of ripping off a tenant.
1 #JimGavin = 26 days. For an explanation of the numbers, see https://mastodon.ie/@2legged/115665379516204101

Fianna Fáil is openly bickering about its unpublished (possibly unfinished) report into #JimGavin's disastrous #Aras25 presidential election.
I dunno if the leaks/allegations are accurate. But after 5 months, #FiannaFail still can't sort this. It's a spectacular failure of party organisation.
2.308 #JimGavins have elapsed since #FF established this inquiry. The idea was to learn from events, and move on. Instead, it's spiralling downwards.

"Chase the BIG things!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
--
Futurist Jim Carroll is writing a series, The Art of the Infinite Pivot, based on 36 lessons from his 36 years as a solo entrepreneur, working as a nomadic worker in the global freelance economy. The series is unfolding here, and at pivot.jimcarroll.com.
--When big, bold opportunities are unfolding, do you chase the big ideas or keep doing small things?
The art of the infinite pivot involves the former, obviously, not the latter.
Big trends involve big opportunities, but only come around so often. So why would you wait?
Think of it this way: the biggest pivot of your life won’t start with a spreadsheet or a market report.
It starts when you finally choose to listen to the quiet, internal voice inside you telling you to leave the safety of "certainty" for the risk of something bigger.
When I quit the corporate world in 1990, I didn't have a 50-page business plan. What I had was a gut feeling that something massive was happening with global networking. I just knew I had to be a part of it. I had no idea where it was going to take me, what I might do, or how I might shape my tomorrow.
But I just knew... so I traded a predictable salary for the unpredictable thrill of the unknown.
I stopped chasing the "safe" path and started chasing the thing I actually wanted to chase.
It worked out pretty well!
Unknown to me at the time, I was deeply caught up in one of the most important aspects of innovation of all - emotional commitment to a bigger trend. And that is the lesson many leaders miss: true innovation requires an emotional investment in a bold future. You'll only accomplish big things if you innovate within the bigger trend.
My early pivot has continued through my career. In fact, throughout my 36-year voyage, the moments of greatest growth always happened after I abandoned the "proven" model to follow a bigger signal that only I could hear.
Look, certainty is comfortable, but being bold takes you further.
Don't wait for the world to permit you to change.
Listen to your internal voice.
Chase the thing you want to chase.
Because it might be in front of you right now.
---
It's no wonder that the title of one of Jim's books starts with Think BIG...!

Daily Inspiration: "Unleash. Master. Connect. Ignite. Translate. Pursue. Launch. Confront. Overcome. Ignore!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Every year, I put together a list of '10 great words' that I use to try to define a way of approaching. the year to come. They involve the overarching themes of future-oriented thinking, innovation, action, and personal growth while excluding the words I have already used, and focusing on action. These words are intended to serve as powerful motivational guidance.
This tradition goes back to 2006 when I released my first list of '10 great words.' That took off as a stage story - I closed many an event with them as a powerful closing storyline
In that vein, here are the 10 Great Words for 2025.
"Unleash" potential with the mindset that despite volatility in 2025, there will be opportunity. To do that, you should continue to...
"Master" new skills that are critical for applying this knowledge effectively. To make the most of this, you plan to...
"Connect" more dots by using these skills and knowledge to see bigger patterns and opportunities. Once you see them, you need to make sure to .....
"Ignite" every idea that emerges from these connections, sparking innovation and creativity. That will involve your ability to...
"Translate" those ideas into actions to make tangible progress and bring concepts to life. Once that happens, you will be able to...
"Pursue" the right opportunities that emerge from your actions, selecting those that promise the greatest impact. You'll need to make sure to...
"Launch" those actions into full-scale initiatives, executing your plans with precision. Be ready though, to ....
"Confront" the barriers that inevitably arise, addressing challenges head-on. And not only that but you will need to ...
"Overcome" the obstacles by adapting and refining your strategies as necessary. And above you, given the volatility that is to come, you will need to
..."Ignore" the noise that distracts from your goals, focusing solely on what truly matters.
How can you do all these things? Small steps!
**#Unleash** **#Master** **#Connect** **#Ignite** **#Translate** **#Pursue** **#Launch** **#Confront** **#Overcome** **#Ignore**

"𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒂𝒚𝒃𝒆!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
You need to commit.
To do that, you need to banish the 'maybe's.
You know:
"Maybe next quarter"
"Maybe when we have clarity"
"Maybe when I'm more comfortable"
"Maybe when the market settles"
"Maybe after we see what competitors do"
"Maybe when we have more money"
"Maybe when the timing is better"
"Maybe when we understand the risks better"
"Maybe when customers start asking for it"
"Maybe when we have the right team"
"Maybe when the technology is more mature"
"Maybe when we get approval from leadership"
"Maybe when we have more data"
"Maybe when things aren't so uncertain"
"Maybe when we finish our current projects"
"Maybe when the economy improves"
"Maybe when we have a guarantee it'll work"
"Maybe when someone else proves it first"
"Maybe when we can afford to fail"
"Maybe when we know exactly what we're doing"
"Maybe when the stars align"
"Maybe when we have time to do it right"
"Maybe when we understand all the implications"
"Maybe when we can measure the ROI"
"Maybe when it becomes urgent"
The "maybe's" are a silent killer of much innovation.Stop saying maybe.
Start saying when.
Better yet, start saying now.
-----
Futurist Jim Carroll has never liked the word ‘maybe.’

𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 30 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘬𝘦𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘵, 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭.
And here's what I know. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀.
Most organizations fail. Not because they want to, but because they continue to let mediocre behaviors rule their culture.
That's the insight that inspired my two latest books, each tackling innovation and growth from a unique angle. The first book, "𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲," is not your typical leadership manual. Instead, I wrote it as a playful, satirical mirror held up to reveal the subtle yet pervasive ways teams unknowingly settle for less. Over the years, I've noticed how easy it is for organizations to drift into habits that quietly sabotage their potential, keeping them comfortably but frustratingly average. This book vividly highlights these self-defeating behaviors, enabling you to recognize and steer clear of them.
I dare you to share it with your team, and ask them to identify the behaviors they admit to being guilty of.
Then comes its companion, "𝘌𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴!" It directly addresses the mindset shifts and practical actions required to break free from those ingrained patterns. It urges you to push beyond your comfort zones, chase bold thinking, embrace calculated risks, and pursue genuine excellence.
𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘦𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵.
Together, these books offer a powerful combination. "𝙀𝙢𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮" helps pinpoint and understand the hidden reasons teams stall, while "𝙀𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮" equips you with strategies and inspiration to overcome these barriers and thrive. I've consistently witnessed that the path to excellence, though challenging, is infinitely more rewarding than settling for less.
Ready to elevate your team's critical thinking, challenge the status quo, and spark meaningful innovation? These books are your starting point.
They're both on Amazon now, and available directly from me.

The highest career value is increasingly found at the intersection of previously distinct careers, knowledge, and skill sets. Hybrid expertise that combines technical, creative, and human skills will continue to command a significant premium in the talent marketplace. No one can know everything there is to know, but knowing how to get that knowledge is a key success factor!
The future is hybrid! You don't need to know much anymore - you just need to know how to know it! Not only that, but you need to know how to know many different things.
Makes sense? Let's dig into the trend of the 'hybrid workforce.'
Read the whole post at the link below.---
Futurist Jim Carroll explored the early signs of this trend in multiple chapters in his 1997 book, Surviving the Information Age.

Organizations that can navigate this transition, focusing on re-skilling existing talent while attracting new capabilities, will have extraordinary advantages. The trend is being accelerated to a ridiculous speed as the impact of AI takes hold.
It's "The Great Rebalancing" of the global workforce, and here's the full PDF report.
https://pdf.jimcarroll.com/Megatrend21-CareerRebalancing.pd
We all know that jobs and careers are changing, but do we know how much? And how fast?
Hint: It's bigger than you think, and will happen faster than you are prepared for.
We've all become familiar with this trend, but suddenly, with the arrival and acceleration of AI, the speed of the change is now picking up the pace. What we thought might have been decades away - the disappearance of many careers and the rapid emergence of new careers - will now take years rather than decades. What's happening is this: there are now several simultaneous, accelerating trends at work involving demographics and technology:
- a demographic crisis in developed nations (a shrinking workforce)
- this creates a powerful incentive for technological adoption
- labor shortages are counteracted by AI productivity gains
- resulting in a desire or need to accelerate AI adoption to maintain economic viability
- which fundamentally challenges society to reskill the human workforce to effectively collaborate with machines! How big a trend is this? Let's quantify the crunch. There are a tremendous number of studies and reports, but one rough estimate suggests that between 2025 and 2030, we will see:
- 170 million new jobs created globally
- 92 million existing roles displaced
- That's a net increase of 78 million jobs (a 7% expansion)
- This "labor-market churn" equals 22% of today's employment
- This means that early 1 in 4 existing jobs will be part of this massive rebalancing! So what do you do?
Buckle up! Get involved! Keep learning!

"Regret is far more expensive than failure" - Futurist Jim Carroll
--
Futurist Jim Carroll is writing a series, The Art of the Infinite Pivot, based on 36 lessons from his 36 years as a solo entrepreneur, working as a nomadic worker in the global freelance economy. The series is unfolding here, and at pivot.jimcarroll.com.
--Most people and organizations are paralyzed by a single, haunting question: "What if I fail?"
They spend months (sometimes years) conducting risk assessments and feasibility studies, all designed to protect themselves from the sting of a mistake. They personally try to avoid risk, or in the case of companies, have entire risk management teams, whose goal is to minimize and eliminate risk. They insulate themselves from bold moves because they cannot bear to see things go wrong.
And in doing so, they miss out on a lot of opportunity - and come to regret it later.
What's worse? Trying to do something and seeing it go wrong? Or thinking back years later, "I should have tried to do it!"
In my own 36-year voyage, I’ve learned that the most dangerous risk isn't the pivot that goes wrong: it's the pivot that never happens. We need to stop obsessing over the cost of a "miss" and start focusing on the only question that truly matters: "What if I never try at all?"
Think of it this way: failure is a temporary setback but a valuable asset. You can learn from it, adjust, and pivot again. But the idea of never trying at all results in a permanent loss of potential. You don't learn and become stuck where you are, missing out on the chance to go where you should be going.
I’ve sat in boardrooms with legacy companies that are now obsolete, not because they made a bad bet, but because they were too afraid to place a bet at all. They chose the "safety" of the status quo, only to find that the status quo had moved on without them.
The Infinite Pivot isn't about being fearless; it’s about being more afraid of standing still than you are of moving forward. When you look back at your career or your company’s history a decade from now, you won't remember the small stumbles.
You will only remember the doors you were too scared to open.
Remember: the risk of the unknown is manageable.
But the cost of "what if" or "if only" is infinite.
---
Futurist Jim Carroll believes that having a case of the 'if-only's' is worse than suffering from a case of the 'whoops!'

Daily Inspiration: "Never accept for a moment their suggestion that you won't succeed!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
Never let doubt creep in.
Never accept for a moment that creativity has limits.
Never accept for a moment that innovation is impossible.
Never accept for a moment that the status quo is enough.
Never accept for a moment that new ideas can't win.
Never accept for a moment that your imagination is too wild.
Never accept for a moment that change isn't worth it.
Never accept for a moment that bold thinking is risky.
Never accept for a moment that creativity can't solve it.
Never accept for a moment that progress is out of reach.
Never accept for a moment that original ideas won't work.
When preparing for today's quote, I got into this theme of thinking about the issues that hold us back, and 'never accepting' those issues. I started coming up with a pretty good list. And yet, at this point, I decided to go ask myself what other viewpoints I have on the theme of 'never accepting.' Some time ago, I created a document that features ALL of the Daily Inspiration posts I've written, There are over 3,000 of them, dating back to August 16.
"From the material in the document, give me 100 items that start with "Never accept for a moment that...". concluding each item with a maximum of 6 words."
ChatGPT willingly obliged, so here goes!
Never accept for a moment that growth happens without discomfort.
.... (long list)
Quite the list! Print it out, tape it to a wall, and refer to it every once in a while!
Never accept.
At any moment.

"Commitment to your most important goal will always be your greatest success." - Futurist Jim Carroll
I once wrote this phrase: "Real progress is often invisible, boring, and repetitive. Don't mistake the quiet for regression!"
In that context, sometimes your greatest small achievements come up against a bold realization. For me, today marks a unique milestone in a long-running personal project—3,500 days of consistent, quiet effort toward a goal that few people actually see. It's a significant step in a long journey, yet another link in a chain that grows stronger each day.
Progress and success always come from commitment to the cause. Wins are often not instant, dramatic, or bold - instead, they are quiet, barely noticeable, forgettable at moments - until suddenly, they collide with a marker of significant success.
Today is one of those days.
And with this comes an important realization about the work I do. I often tell clients that successful innovation doesn't always involve a big, dramatic breakthrough; it’s usually a messy, squiggly line of effort where the ultimate moment of success is eventually reached. In the same way, personal success on a big goal is often about the small steps, not the big leaps. Managing any major life goal isn't just about reaching the finish line; it’s about the mindset pivot you maintain along the way.
I've often said that you are the total of all your highs and each of your lows, and you must own the quiet, repetitive, low parts of the process for the highs to mean anything at all.
As I look toward my next milestone (like my upcoming tee time at St. Andrews!) I’m reminded that success is about patience.
It’s about trading the immediate dopamine of a "quick win" for the long-term guarantee of a life well-lived.

Pretty fucking awesome!

Daily Inspiration: "Take pride in your losses because they teach you about your wins!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
People hide from their failure.
They shouldn't.
Because often, it's the only way to get to success.
Your wins are informed by your losses. Your success is defined by your failure. Moving forward always comes after a few steps back. Achieving your goals always comes after your missteps in trying to achieve them.
You'll always do worse before you do better.
This attitude has always informed everything I do. When I learned to ski late in life, success only came after some spectacularly bad moments. Learning to golf involved regularly going into the water before I managed to get over it fairly consistently. Learning Linux on my own involved blowing up a lot of well-functioning computer systems until I learned how not to.
You might have seen in the last few weeks a few notes apologizing in case I sent a few duplicates of my Daily Inspiration. This is because I was amid a complex voyage to move all of my servers - jimcarroll.com, my mailing list system at insight.jimcarroll.com, my other inspiration site at daily.jimcarroll.com, as well as a bunch of family and friends sites - onto a new server infrastructure that would cut my monthly costs in half. It was a complex project, and seemed that for every step forward, I was taking three back.
Until I wasn't, and success was to be found.
There's a saying that is often shared - 'fail early, fail fast, fail often!'
There couldn't be a better mindset for moving yourself into tomorrow!
