"It’s hard to find a more American place than Texas, and nowhere says Texas more than Dallas. Dallas was one of the most popular soap operas in 1980s America, the Dallas Cowboys are known as “America’s Team,” and the city is home to a whole slew of American business titans, including American Airlines, AT&T, and Texas Instruments. Alongside its culture and prosperity, however, what long made Dallas feel like the epitome of Americana is that it was also a place where homeownership stayed attainable — even after the 2008 financial crisis.
In 2011, the median home price in DFW was $149,900, and the income of the median DFW household was roughly double the income required to qualify for a mortgage to buy a median-priced house. That’s good enough on its own, but the median ratios actually understate how affordable the DFW metroplex was in the early 2010s. If we dig into the data, we find that lots of houses were selling at the far low end of the price distribution between 2010 and 2015 — with around one-in-five homes going for less than $99,000 in the first few years of the decade, and anywhere between 5% and 15% going for less than $69,000.3 Dallas was truly a place where the American dream of homeownership was alive and well — a place where families that worked hard, lived frugally, and played by the rules could buy a house to call their own within their means.
That’s no longer true. As of 2024, the median DFW home price hovered at a little over $440,000, a nearly three-fold jump from its 2011 level. Now, the income of the median DFW household is barely enough to qualify for a loan to buy a median-priced house in the Metroplex, even for people who can make a 25% down payment, according to the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University."

It’s that cold November rain thing happening outside this week. So dark and unpleasant to be doing anything outside. This is what my kitchen looks like when I pour candles. My witchy-prepper combo task. Even tho I’m a beekeeper, I don’t use my own beeswax for candles. I am very careful to not mess up the frames too much when extracting honey as it takes a lot of bee energy to make wax and I would rather they didn’t have to do much wax making in the spring. I use what little wax I get for salve and things like that. I do occasionally buy beeswax tapers from a local candle company because they are so nice but they are expensive. There is a time and place for all things tho. I make these candles out of vegetable wax, there is a good source for quantity buying in Vancouver. I reuse the little tin cups over and over until they are un-usable. I’ve had the glass votive containers for years. I buy pre-made tabbed wicks and use old beeswax candle stubs melted down to stick them to the containers prior to pouring the veg wax.
In a couple of puttering-around hours, I can make enough candles to last the winter. The tea lights are for offerings and shrines mostly, but are handy when the power is out. The votives give good light and last a long time, usually through several long power outages. I have given this a lot of thought over the years. I use flashlights etc. as well during power outages but batteries are expensive, resource intensive and not very sustainable. Of course using soy and veg wax would not be sustainable in a total collapse either. In that situation I’d be using tallow and very frugally at that. But all things considered, for now I feel that pouring my own veg wax candles is the lightest consumable footprint.
This ended up making about 110 tea lights and 14 votives from about 3/4 of a bag of soy wax flakes. -

There is a particular kind of restlessness that afflicts educated, capable people who have followed the expected path into stable, well-compensated careers and arrived at a nagging sense that something important is missing. They are not unhappy exactly. They are comfortable. But comfortable, it turns out, is not the same as meaningful, and the gap between the two has a way of becoming harder to ignore over time. Rutger Bregman’s Moral Ambition: Stop Wasting Your Talent and Start Making a Difference, published in Dutch in 2024 and in English in 2025, is written directly for those people. It is a provocation, a challenge, and in some respects a manifesto, aimed at high-achieving individuals who Bregman believes are squandering their talents on work that does not matter as much as it could. It is also, depending on your tolerance for moral urgency, either one of the most energizing books you will read this year or one of the most exhausting.

He works as a journalist and author for De Correspondent, a Dutch reader-funded journalism platform that operates without advertising and prioritizes depth over speed. He is the author of several internationally translated books, most notably Utopia for Realists, which made the case for universal basic income and a shorter working week, and Humankind, which argued against the prevailing pessimistic view of human nature by drawing on historical and social science research.
Bregman became globally recognizable in 2019 when footage of his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos went viral. Standing before an audience of billionaires and world leaders, he argued that the event was essentially a gathering of people who had gotten very rich by avoiding taxes and that the assembled philanthropists were treating the symptoms of inequality rather than its causes. For readers who are still building their financial foundation, working through debt, establishing savings habits, and developing investment discipline, this is probably not the right book for this moment. The psychological bandwidth required for the kind of career reinvention Bregman advocates is hard to access when basic financial security is not yet established. Getting the fundamentals right first, building an emergency fund, contributing consistently to a retirement account, automating savings, and living below your means, creates the stability from which bigger questions about purpose and impact become genuinely answerable rather than merely anxiety-inducing.
