[continued] And after an incident, the lines of investigative authority or prosecutorial authority can be very challenging to navigate.
But I think the Washington public expects their local sheriff or local police chief or officers that work for either to not simply watch if somebody in their community is having their rights violated.
(2/2)
This is setting up - by necessity, I want to be very clear about that - guidelines for direct conflict between Washington State and Federal agents.
There's unidentified/masked Federal fascist agent contexet in this, too, since that'll be illegal here real soon.

They're being pretty nonspecific in this because as _they_ put it they don't want to give away game plan. But:
27:38, Atty. Gen. Nick Brown:
What I would say is as a general matter, state and local law enforcement do not have to simply watch or look away if the law is being violated.
If they see somebody being assaulted unlawfully or attacked unlawfully or otherwise having their legal rights violated, we do not expect state and local officers to simply watch or do nothing.
It is important that each of those jurisdictions talk to their lawyers and legal teams, understand where those lines are drawn.

I don't know that this is the loudest 3D-printable emergency whistle as it claims, but it does print well even on a low-end printer (I've tested with clear PLA, prints fine) and it is loud.
It's always handy to have emergency kit around. I suggest pairing them with foam earplugs.

We take opportunity when opportunity presents, but I gotta say... putting all new flooring down in a house that you are currently living in by shuffling everything around and then one day later installing half a new kitchen one day before Yule with extra family squeezed in here and there... is not the easiest way to get shit done. But it got done! (I'm cranky, my back hurts and I've been sleeping in for days) Seasonal Blessings to everyone and stay safe out there. The weather is bonkers.

The in-depth snow and water summaries of BC. As always, climate change is complicated, and clearly, we have a problem.

Climate change is here now and it is hot, thirsty, windy and dangerous. And how it affects growing food is significant. Over the years, I've seen a lot of comments like “I know HOW to grow food, I just don't need to right now” or “yeah, when SHTF I'll be out there putting in a garden and hunting”.
Listen. If you aren't gardening right now, you don't know how to garden. I've been gardening my whole life and every year it changes, the climate changes, the zones change, the air moisture, humidity, wind, plants and soil water needs, changes in what varieties will do well in more heat, less water and humidity, length of growing season, - every aspect of growing food is rapidly changing and you need to adapt.
You will be lost in the weeds – no pun intended – if you don't start right now (better yet years ago unfortunately) to learn the basics and understand how climate change as well as other factors such as animal movement and migration, insects and pollinators, birds, rodents, and troublesome bugs affect your ability to make the most of your available growing space. Plant diseases are more troublesome as the planet warms up and the zones move north, along with fungal diseases, harmful insect migration, invasives, predators and prey.
Seed germination and viability seems to be becoming an issue the last few years. I'm not sure if it's supply chain, dishonest corporation practices, lack of expertise or what, but it is getting weirder. A couple of years ago we had pepper-gate (massive numbers of mis-labeled seed packages mainly with pepper varieties but also squash and other vegetables). This year has been a challenge to get kale and some lettuces to germinate for no apparent reason.
Last year we had a very late spring deep freeze which took out many kinds of fruit trees in BC. There were few locally grown soft fruits such as peaches to be had. So far this year, the blossoms are showing promise, so here's hoping.
The point is, grow food RIGHT now while you can learn and also have a monetary buffer while learning, during failures and while grocery stores have fully stocked shelves. During a societal collapse is not the time to find out that your soil is severely lacking in a necessary nutrient or that your growing zone won't support your stable foods or that the rats will eat you out of house and home. Learning how to deal with all of these issues now and sourcing out possible solutions in your local area while becoming familiar with typical ups and downs builds resiliency in your future security.

I have written about using a ferro rod to start fires in the past. But I never really explained a few things. As a prepper, sure I could buy a lifetime’s worth of Bics and always be able to light a fire. But years ago I learned how to use a ferro rod and steel to light a fire and here is why. About 10 years ago I made a pledge, as an offering to Lugh, to use only a ferro rod and steel (my bush knife) to start the bonfires for a whole year.
At first I was clumsy and it took a while to get that flame going. As time went on, I learned what the best tinder was (fine dry swamp grass and curls of fatwood kept in a pouch), the best technique (hold the rod to the surface and make a slow solid shower of sparks down onto the tinder) and got so that I could get that fire lit with one swipe on the rod (have the whole little fire pyramid ready with tiny kindling and a space to stuff the lit tinder under). It was the learning, conquering a challenge, and making a life saving thing without the disposable use of fossil fuel. From a practical point of view, it makes sense to always have alternatives as well.
Bic lighters are absolutely shitty when they get wet. It takes a lot of energy to dry them out and get them to light (running the wheel on your jeans for 5 or 10 minutes) which might be perilous if you were in a situation where getting that fire going was important. Bics can be lost, run out of fuel, etc. so having an extra method of making fire is common sense.
But that is the least of it. Learning how to do something that is outside your current skill set is the whole point. Doing the preparation ahead of time by creating a fire pouch with everything you need in it and keeping it with you and dry at all times. You are training your brain to think ahead, use methodical procedures and develop small motor skills.
After I started using the knife and ferro rod, I realized I wanted a sheath to keep them together so early in my learning to do leather work, I made this sheath that keeps them together. The cotton pouch can hang on my belt under my coat to keep tinder in as well, but I usually just keep it in the camp kit. The best way to prepare for future difficulty is to learn to use your gear now.

Rooftop sprinklers are expensive. Not everyone can afford the top-of-the-line equipment but everyone deserves to have a way to make their property safer. Here is a yt video with a DYI rooftop set up which seems legit. Of course make sure anything you build works well every time but this is worth a go.

“Telecommunications in multiple NWT communities are severely disrupted due to wildfire activity in the southern NWT. ..."
THIS is why we need to keep pushing for better ham radio emergency communications (equipment, antenna, radio rooms, expense reimbursement, education) within the PREOC centers in every area. Some scary photos coming out of Hay River tonight.
