New episode of #SystemsOfHarm just dropped 🎉
This week I’m talking to @LauraParkerUX about design systems and dyscalculia - a persistent difficulty in understanding numbers.
Apple: https://apple.co/3C3d0gY
Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3oDbCOQ
Around 6% of the population has dyscalculia, affecting their ability to do tasks like tell the time, deal with financial matters, and transpose reference numbers.

Stage Manager Should just Exit, Stage Left
I have been using Stage Manager on my Macs on a daily basis for well over a month now, and I have… feelings about it.(...)

Did some more work on Funktal, it now has support for mutable state. I added this because functions called to handle an event frequently need it.
The way it works is:
- define a type, e.g.
types {
Coords = UInt16 UInt16 MkCoords
}- mark an instance as state:
state {
xy : Coords
}- Optionally, create some convenience accessors to access the fields in the record. These are just integers.
constants {
x#Coords : UInt8 = 0x00
y#Coords : UInt8 = 0x01
}

Browser testing, cont'd: Gotta say, this Vivaldi thingy is making a good first impression - looks nice, useful features, good customization & privacy options, and, not least, blazingly fast even with many tabs open (which I would expect, tab-browsing-centered as it is).
It should be noted that most tests so far have seen performance drop off markedly over just a few weeks, but so far, a contender.

I am writing a newsletter about UX and UI topics, (un)productivity and remote work.
Why? Because I think there's someone out there who likes to read and whom I could help - at least a tiny bit.
I am sharing my experiences and things I come across as a remote working product designer. I have no sponsorship and do not include ads. I just do this because I like to.

If you look at the photo in the original article, the people’s heads are positively wrapped in straps. NSFW jokes aside, between the weight of a headset and the tension of the straps to prevent slippage, the cumulative effect is to shorten the viable #VR session length for many people. I know with my migraines that’s just too much going on. This is why understanding context of use matters - how many encumbrances are your customers dealing with? #InclusiveDesign #DesignBeyondDevices #UXDesign

#OpenAI just released #GPTChat, a large #LanguageModel optimized for #conversation not more than 48 hours ago and it almost broke #AI Twitter. How do we prepare for AI-powered future? What #skillsets do we need to double down on? Are our #jobs at risk? What will the future of #labor look like?

...as i have just migrated here from mstdn.social (lovely place, just big and a bit slow rn), perhaps a new #introduction is in order?
I'm a picker, I'm a grinner, I'm a lover, and I'm a sinner.
On the literal, I cover it pretty well in my bio: #product / #UX leader, product vision and strategy at innovation.ca.gov, mentor, he/they, federated blog at @[email protected]

also currently at @[email protected] and @[email protected] for now

@Adam Hunt Just found this post, thanks to @івась тарасик for boosting it into my TL:
https://uxdesign.cc/mastodon-is-antiviral-design-42f090ab8d51It’s possible the influx of newcomers will drift away. They’ll discover that, on some level, they don’t really like the antiviral design and culture of Mastodon; they prefer the buzzy surges of Twitter, its Coney Island of the attention-span.
Or maybe they’ll stay, and change Mastodon’s culture. They’ll gradually inject more viral behavior into the mix.
Good read about #FediCulture and I'm going to post this article on several places :sunglasses: -
Great example of #UX and #InstructionalDesign here, geared very well to one of its audiences, folks with #AuditoryProcessing difficulty. Note that there is Just Enough Text.
SADLY what you're seeing in the video is apparently not captioned for ease of use with #VisualDisabilities /#ScreenReaders .

Are there blind UX designers? I'd expect so, I just launched a icon based mobile app for wireframing and visual/2D-spatial brainstorming.
Would you use something like that? How could I make it work for you? And do you have ideas on how I can preview/explain how it works?
Other tips?

#introduction2 #Introductions
Just migrated to this server so thought I should reintroduce myself:
Design #anthropologist, women's rights advocate, and co-founder of an ethnographic UX firm working on community-centered approaches to #disasterriskmanagement and #climate #adaptation .Also a trainor in nature-based solutions #NbS for #flood management, focusing on women's and community inclusion. Interested in small island disaster management #disasterjustice and #coastal adaptation - my nearly finished PhD is on this topic.
Dogs, books, coffee, beaches, ideally all of them at once.
Looking for like-minded people for though-provoking conversations! Without the toxicity of the bird, of course.

Another website UX fail:
On fonic.de, if you want to reset the password, you get an eMail with an expiring link.
When you visit the expired link, it shows you the form without any warning message.
When you try to send the form it just says (loosely translated):
There was a problem, try again in a few minutes.No, nothing to try about, just tell me I need a new link!

Ugh... downloading multiple large archives from #GoogleDataTakeout is /TEDIOUS/... I don't dare download more than 2 at a time out of fear all of them will abort around 80-90%, but that also means that every time I queue up two more, I need to enter my password again...
I wish I could just use pubkey authentication and download these via rsync over SSH...

LOL at 'GenAI patterns' which are just more prompt juggling nonsense. LangChain and LlamaIndex sample aps with a fancy UX; 'AI Memory' is the new hello world app.
*It's still the wrong abstraction* - STOP TREATING GENAI AS THE WHOLE SYSTEM.The generation part is LEAST interesting - like chat is the LEAST useful business AI interface.
Gen AI doesn't need more power / bigger contexts / more 'agency' it needs to be PART of a system not the system itself.I wrote about this control pattern (which is what I posit GenAI REALLY needs to function effectively) Controlled Fuzziness a while ago https://www.mostlylucid.net/blog/constrained-fuzziness-pattern

Can our UI designs help save energy? At Silphium Design, we just dropped a guide on energy-efficient UI design for clean tech. Blending my computer science and sociology background, I explore how a biophilic approach reduces digital carbon footprints while keeping interfaces beautiful and user-friendly. Let us align our pixels with the planet.
