One of the things I like about Mastodon is this: when a troll tries the old "anyone who blocks me is just admitting that they have no argument" tactic, we don't fall for it and just go ahead and block the troll.

This weekend, I witnessed the Ekpo masquerade for the first time — a sacred tradition among the Ibibio, Annang, and Efik peoples of southeastern Nigeria.
Rooted in African Traditional Religion, Ekpo once served as spiritual connection, moral guide, and community protector.

I'm having a few thoughts on social norms. I'm used to IRC and Usenet, where a channel or group is understood to be an open forum and, when people make a statement, it is seen as normal for anyone else, acquainted or not, to respond to it, even tangentially.
But on more social-network-style graph-based communications where the flow is determined by a follow edge between nodes or something like it, a lot of people find it disturbing or invasive to have strangers pop into their mentions to rebut, add, or jump off from their point.
I think this causes a lot of friction and expectation mismatches. I don't think either norm is wrong, though it is useful if people make it clear which one they're expecting.
For the avoidance of doubt, I'm an IRC-type person. If I'm posting public or unlisted, I do not mind strangers to disagree with me, add their own twist, or give their own reaction. I will also respect the desire of graph people who don't want me to do that to them.

Manchmal glaube ich, ich bin hier der einzige, der diese "Like-Sternchen" klickt. -Ich finde die gut, denn: bei diesen Likes geht ea nicht darum, den Content des be-liketen zu pushen oder auch nur das Ego. Es ist ein ehrliches Like (weil halt Fedi) und ich meine es dann auch so. Ganz simpel von meiner Warte aus.
Wie haltest du das mit den Likes? Zu unpersönlich oder iss mir egal oder mache ich gern...oder...oder....oder?

I'm unfollowing accounts who post (or re-post) violence into my timeline without content warnings. It's just too much for me. It's either that or leaving the #Fediverse altogether.
And yes, I know that having that choice is a huge privilege! Everyone who lives in a peaceful country is hugely privileged compared to people suffering from war and terror attacks.

@jenniferplusplus I have the impression that early adopters of the #Fediverse, of which many trans people belong to, fell into the false sense of comfort that there was a stable, uniform #fediculture. But #culture is inherent to #groupdynamics & a 100k group is not the same as a 2M network. While it's paradoxical to seek to enforce a culture across the Fediverse, a network designed to SUPPORT #divergence, I think it's fair to debate whether an #LGBTQ #instance should ban the #BBC or not.

As a cultural #anthropologist, I appreciate your approach to seeing the #Fediverse as having diverse cultures. I really appreciate the even-handed tone and thoughtfulness your bring to these discussions. I am someone who came to Mastodon to get FAR, FAR, FAR away from #BigTech. I do not regret the move. I’m a newbie who is not (yet) wedded to any particular #fediculture. I find everything happening here fascinating.
I wouldn’t mind a trend to more female-identifying fedizens. 😜

Ik had 'm al geboost, maar ik wil toch nog even expliciet de aandacht vestigen op dit artikel over de #Fediverse en dan met name de #FediCulture.
De Fediverse (of #Mastodon, zoals velen het onterecht noemen) is fundamenteel anders dan de vogelsite, niet alleen qua onderliggende techniek.
TL;DR Dit is niet #Twitter, dat is bewust. En wel hierom.

They’ll discover that, on some level, they don’t really like the antiviral design and culture of Mastodon; they prefer the buzzy surges of Twitter, its Coney Island of the attention-span.
Or maybe they’ll stay, and change Mastodon’s culture. They’ll gradually inject more viral behavior into the mix.

@Nazar Tokar It's part of #FediCulture to not mention the name, we see it as an unsafe place, a place of hate.
Kind of like how in the Lord of the Rings the name of #Mordor is avoided if possible ;-) -
I’m seeing an awful lot of photos posted with no alt text, and hashtags not using #camelCase or #PascalCase
Please use these for #Accessibility as it’s considerate to #DisabledPeople and also benefits others (e.g. if your image has text in a foreign language, translation tools can read it; Pascal Case hashtags are more readable for everyone). The #MetaText iOS app actually prompts you to add #AltText when posting an image.
