Hey folks, I'm a huge #DnD fan, specifically #DarkSun, #Eberron, and #Planescape. I also love #WrathandGlory, #Vampire, #EsperGenesis and more.

I am a Canadian geek. I am not a geek in a can, and I've never used the herb many people think my name refers to.
I mostly play #GURPS these days. In the past I've been a big #DnD fan, and still play #pathfinder with my Dad's group once a month. I tend to favour a more traditional style of play, as I find it lends itself to mystery and investigation more then modern styles. My favourite settings are #Eberron #Spelljammer and #Tangents from #Alterntiy

Really, I wish the DM had let me play Ruha my hexblood warlock with the iron arm as their pact was weapon., instead of Reeda the flying tiefling .
Ruha had more substance that would have mesh in this campaign. Ex bandit leader, dumped in Eberron after assassinating someone for her babushka Baba Yaga, spent time on a pirate crew, then decided to head in land and start a less self-destructive path... and skip out on the war she started between the two largest pirate factions.
Reeda on the other hand is young, all her experience is second hand from her brothers and parents who all served in the Brelish Army. She's tangled with the foreman of the logging operation to the north. She starts in the campaign having lived in Sharn about 2yrs and her oldest brother arranged employment at new job to keep her getting sucked into the crime syndicate Dassk.
Ruha just has more je ne sasi quoi that can hook in with events going on. A lot more ways and impetus to engage.
Where as Reeda, well I'm either hanging in the background quietly, or I've slipped off to the bar and do a solo txt RP between Reeda and the barkeeper/owner so I don't get bored and putz with stuff other than the session.

Back to the Table
On Monday I played D&D in person for the first time in a very long time. This is partially because I’ve been playing online and partially because I’m a bit of a “forever DM”, a role I really enjoy (especially if it makes a game happen). That said it’s nice to just play one character and not have to plan and adjudicate everything!
I joined an existing game with an open seat run by a fellow neighborhood dad who has been running campaigns for a kid group, including mine, from our (now former) elementary school. He usually runs Eberron, and since I had recently picked up the digital version of Forge of the Artificer I decided to whip up a dwarf armorer character concept.
It was really fun to play; the existing party had to rescue my character and then we had a very dynamic combat in my study. We plan to return to this story hook in a few weeks. I’m really looking for forward to figuring out who Mack is.

So, what has everyone been playing?
I joined a podcast that does one shots on Monday. I am playing an Eidolon: Become Your Best Self game inspired by Persona on Tuesday. I am playing Fellowship 2e on Thursday. My GM is about to finish a Jim McGarva's Strike 2e game on Friday (used Eyes of the Stone Thief). I finished an Eberron game in 5e last Saturday that I ran for a year. A former player will now run Gundam 5e alternating with another playing running D&D 5e's Icewind Dale. Sunday I run Dungeon World using the Plangea setting. And I'm considering a playtest podcast for my RWBY meets Dark Souls & Bleach game, Wild Hunt, on Wednesday.

No other early-era playable species/race in D&D history has been shoehorned into a singular type as the Halfling. Originally called Hobbits, because that’s what they were, Gygax decided to avoid a legal battle and renamed them as Halflings.
But for nearly thirty years these small people were either the peoples who lived in homely burrows (Stouts) or peoples who lived in Buckland (Tallefellows). There were also hairfoots, which let’s be honest the three types of D&D Halfling perfectly mirrored Tolkien’s varieties of Hobbit.
In 2024 Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards of the Coast says there are more varieties, mentioning Eberron’s street-gang house and Dark Sun’s roving cannibals. And that’s it.
Halfling communities come in all varieties. For every sequestered shire tucked away in an unspoiled part of the world, there’s a crime syndicate like the Boromar Clan in the Eberron setting or a territorial mob of halflings like those in the Dark Sun setting.
No longer are the differences in Halfling types subraces as earlier versions of the game. But the “all varieties” are conventional hobbits, gangsters and cannibals.
This need not be all varieties of the small folk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGqOVIGcxgA
Caravans
In Rings of Power we meet two varieties of Halflings. The first are the Harfeet, who travel in communal covered wagons travelling with the seasons over a wide land. These peoples hide quickly (a Halfling born trait) and sing proudly of their history. Though not ‘Shire-y’ they are clearly the popular Hobbit/Halfling of fantasy tropes. Caravan Halflings have been embraced by D&D in the past, fitting them in your world is easy.
Desert cliffs
Stoors from the Rings of Power (Fandom | CC BY SA)Season 2 introduces the Stoors, who live in cliffside holes in an arid land. You can see some Halfing behavior in the structure of the settlement. Again, they are quite communal, which I don’t like associating with a species because that feels cultural, not born, but this is part of the Halfling trope still. What makes these Stoors inspiring for small folk in my world is that they seem to embrace the divine luck of Halflings. Those aqueducts and microforms carved into cliff sides seems to require bravery, nimbleness and luck. Children scampering through that space would fall constantly without the luck of the gods.
There are other ways that you can embrace the born traits of Halflings and build some societies, captured in their homes.
Coop homes
Chicken coops sold at American feed stores (Dave Clark)In visiting various farm and feed stores you can find fancy chicken coops. These will frequently have multiple levels, many doors and windows. Sometimes they have a small fence in material similar to the walls or roof.
These have made me think of Halflings for some time, not just because they are made for tiny creatures. The various nooks and crannies are places to hide. Similar to modern micro-housing, a cluster of these coop-style Halfling homes would take up very little space in a fantasy city too. A cluster would touch on the communal aspect that Halflings will never escape, because their connection to Tolkien is so strong (even in Eberron and Dark Sun).
Or one with a run extension could be a connection to terriers, cats, or other small domestic animals that live with these Halflings as companions. A design with space underneath is sensible for raising mushrooms or other foods.
What other home types make sense for Halflings?
Rafts and waterways
A species of brave nimble peoples living on the waters in a mix of canals, creeks and lakes makes a lot of sense. Their small size lends itself well to working in the sails and ropes of the big people too. Narrow paths of docks and ladders would require a nimble and lucky peoples too. This also works at sea, with Halflings living in the rigging of multi-mast ships.
Bridges
Yes, I love this trope. My own Fort Ooshar uses it. Small folk are perfect for settling in the upper levels of a bridge-city. They also make sense in the undercarriage. The ability to slip into and out of the various rope elevators is perfect for the narrative. Halflings in this environment can be similar to the Eberron gangs or they can be families who take up the small spaces that humanity (all the medium thinking peoples) ignores.
Tree houses
Yes, yes, yes — this trope is heavily associated with Elves. It need not be. Halflings make a lot of sense as a tree people. They are small and light, which means they can live in a much larger variety of tree and not just the not-Redwoods. Put them in birch, or larches, or cedar. Maybe they live in briars with offices in the local oak. Being just a couple dozen pounds is a massive advantage for Halfling tree people. Their divine bravery and luck are also a great fit.
Spire lands
Imagine a land of natural spires with Stoor-like homes, but even more exaggeration of height with tiny bridges of rope connecting the neighborhoods. Humans would hate such a place, but a Halfling would run full speed along a rope bridge connecting two towering rocks.
tl;dr
Halflings can be more than just Hobbits. Your fantasy version of the small folk should embrace their born traits – brave, nimble, lucky, stealthy. Don’t assign culture due to their species, but the places where they live and how that influences them.
Your city Halflings could be gangsters, your caravan Halflings could be communal, your bridge Halflings could be a hidden undercurrent, your burrown Halflings could be a coven.
Embrace more options in your fantasy world so you can tell a wider variety of fantastical tales.

Does anyone remember any really good non-WotC #dnd3e books from the 2000-2005 period?
There was a lot of crap, but I remember it as feeling like very earnest and passionate crap.
Was there anything good that still had that spirit of 90s RPGs, before the shift to Eberron-Dungeon Punk, that anyone would recommend?

Sessions:
26x #Duetgame
24x #Fatefinders
14x Out of the Abyss (inkl. Epilog der Kampagne)
10x Schatten der Klage/neue #Eberron Kampagne
9x Wild Beyond the Witchlight
10x Sunless Citadel
15x Lost Mine of Phandelver
11x #Redskye
9x #TheBetween
5x #BladesInTheDark
2x #BrindlewoodBay

In darkness there is light — the Lamplighter is a new 5th edition D&D Background
Within our fantasy worlds are massive cites. There are lots of problems with the scale of some of these cities — they need farms, roads, and light because residents are up at all hours. Settings like Ravnica and Eberron deal with the largest cites via magic. Those worlds with less magic manage metropolises with some magic, some magically imbued races and hand-waving. One of those hands we can wave relates to light.
Magic is the simple way to add light to cities. Another way to have them with some level of light for safety and to encourage all races to reside within is via a public lantern system. For about 150 years this was the process in Western Europe and Northeast America. People would go through and light lanterns along the street. Those shops and establishments that wanted business in the evening or early morning would do the same.
These workers would live split lives as early risers and night owls.
Let’s crank all of this up to d20 and make them potential heroes. Meet the Lamplighter, for “in darkness there is light.”
Photo by Josh Hild on Pexels.comLamplighter
You know your neighborhood. You don’t have a favorite bar, or food stand, or favorite bakery — they all are you favorite. They know your route, you know when every one gets up or goes to sleep. You know the street urchin, the acolyte, the haberdasher, the goblin family that makes the best trinkets (maybe you have one favorite). They all know you too.
Getting around the city you use a run-jump parkour along the crates and awnings, somehow never letting your lighting candle go out. You flow through the streets and alleys. You’re a great observer and with the other Lamplighters the group always knows the secrets and rumors of a land — a nobleman leaving the tavern too late, a merchant up too early with visitors on the stoop, a door left opened. And you know the guilds and gangs of the underground, because when your lights go out they are there, ready to do their work. They know you, and never act against you (unless you count putting out a light early), because you are a beloved symbol of the city. You are a Lamplighter.

When visiting a new town or city you quickly pick up the rhythm of the streets. The Lamplighter is able to figure out what neighborhoods and buildings are most active at what times, when the urchins and gangs are out, when the guards are on patrol. The pace of a city and its people is second nature to the Lamplighter.
In your hometown your knowledge is more accurate and more complete, and you will always know someone who will help you in a time of need.
Lamplighter Design Goals
Frankly, this background started with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Jack in Mary Poppins Returns. The lamplighters featured throughout the movie, riding bikes, lighting the neighborhoods of London, and inspiring people to be their best through song, dance, and conversation. There are some bard themes, but nothing is magical besides a few people loving their town and making it better.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ9WKQmcX2k
Beyond what Jack does in the movie, there’s also an opportunity for a Lamplighter in the massive cities of not-quite Eberron levels of magic. These workers are active at dawn and dusk. As Waterdeep, Skuld, Calimport and other transition between night and day the neighborhoods transition too. Lamplighters are not guards or police. They fill of space of advisor, guide, and concerned citizen.
They know that the world’s largest cities need the hope and safety that lanterns provide. Without that comforting light what is a city anyway?

Seeing Things – The Trump And Hegseth Show: Toxic Masculinity – Liza Donnelly
The Trump And Hegseth Show: Toxic Masculinity
And use US Cities as military training grounds
By Liza Donnelly, Sep 30, 2025
Today, Pete Hegseth and Trump gathered 800+ Generals, spending millions to bring them to Virgina just so he and Hegseth could have a photo op. It was a joke, Hegseth looked riduculous. A former FOX talk show host talking to 800 men and women who have risked their lives for our democracy. I don’t really want to spend too much time on it, but it really annoys me. Their effort to ram a toxic brand of machismo down our throats is offensive.
Hegseth: “No more climate change worship, no more division, distraction or gender delusions,”
There are no words to describe this Not My President. –DrWebHe wants to get rid of facial hair in the military.
He wants everyone in the military to be really “fit.”
He defended his firing of more than a dozen military leaders, many of them people of color and women: the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., who is Black; the first woman to command the Navy, Adm. Lisa Franchetti; and the U.S. military’s representative to the NATO military committee, Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield.
Walking around stage, he said he wanted to change the military’s “stupid rules of engagement” that he claims limit war fighters in the field. Hegseth had fired the top lawyers for the Army, Navy and Air Force in an effort to “remake the military into a force that is more aggressive on the battlefield and less hindered by the laws of armed conflict.”
He wants his “Department of War” (what Trump wants the Defense Dept to be renamed, but Congress has not approved it) to be able to play dirty, I guess.
Trump followed Hegseth, and try as hard as he could, he could not get the military leaders to laugh or even applaud. It is customary for miltary personal to remain non-partisan in situations like this, much to Trump’s chagrin. NY Times reporter Maggie Haberman wrote, “It was striking how many times President Trump tried to get the assembled military leaders to break character, or laugh when he mocked his predecessors or used his typical political lines. It was also striking how often they resisted before Trump finally threw in the towel.”
In his rambling delivery, repeating so many of his grievances to the assembled group of high ranking professionals, he brought up tariffs, Joe Biden and the autopen, the southern border, CNN, his feelings about Putin and his desire for a Nobel Peace Prize he feels he deserves. “I think we should maybe start thinking about battleships by the way,” he said at one point, pausing to bring up a 1950s documentary series about naval warfare. “I used to watch ‘Victory at Sea.’ I love ‘Victory at Sea.’”
Trump said he told Hegseth that “we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military,” referring to urban areas in the US.
This man is crazy and dangerous.
The goverment is close to a shutdown, which will furlough many and stop services. Speaker Johnson has set it up so that this will happen: he canceled votes earlier this month after Republicans in his chamber pushed through a stopgap spending measure to fund the government through Nov. 21. That was a bid to “pressure Democrats into accepting the Republicans’ proposal, but they refused, blocking the measure in that chamber, where the bill is currently stalled, awaiting the 60 votes it would need to move.”
