  3. So, I think it wasn't an essay, but two movies I saw in class -- "The Bro Code" and "The Strength to Resist". I'll see if I can find a link to those. In the meantime, here is my student response to the movies that I wrote back in 2017.

"The movie, “The Strength to Resist,” Dr. Gail Dines talks media’s impact on boys and men, and how “men are affected by society’s encoded messages of what it means to be a man” (Strength). However, in the movie, “The Bro Code,” Dr. Thomas Keith describes “Maxim model of manhood” (Bro Code). If a man doesn’t “measure up to Alpha Male, he will put you in your place,” (Bro Code). If one doesn’t measure up to “a tough guy badass” (Bro Code) hypermasculine model, then you’re were either feminized or a “a McLovin” (Bro Code) nerd-type.

The #hypermasculine model puts pressure on boys and men to hide their feelings or be considered weak or feminized, and to act and look a certain way – with an emphasis of being buff and tough. But it is painfully obvious – especially after watching “The Strength to Resist” and the Ms. magazine article – that there is a lot of pressure on girls and women to look a certain way – with boys and men can be brainwashed into judging women by their looks and thinking of them as just “sex objects” (Bro Code).

Gloria Steinem summed it up nicely when she described how that “even ‘real’ non-model women photographed for a woman’s magazine are usually made up, dressed in credited clothes, and retouched out of all reality” (Steinem, 181). Unrealistic expectations hurt everyone, and only by rejecting these standards can we be ourselves, and not media-constructed hyperboles."

    Media-constructed hyperbole describes #Hegseth perfectly!

  8. I just came across this in my feed....

"It is not easy to find a direct economic explanation of the behaviour of the people who now rule the world. The desire for pure power seems to be much more dominant than the desire for wealth. This has often been pointed out, but curiously enough the desire for power seems to be taken for granted as a natural instinct, equally prevalent in all ages, like the desire for food. Actually it is no more natural, in the sense of being biologically necessary, than drunkenness or gambling. And if it has reached new levels of lunacy in our own age, as I think it has, then the question becomes: What is the special quality in modern life that makes a major human motive out of the impulse to bully others? If we could answer that question — seldom asked, never followed up — there might occasionally be a bit of good news on the front page of your morning paper."

Men Have No Friends and Women Bear the Burden

#ToxicMasculinity—and the persistent idea that feelings are a "female thing"—has left a generation of straight men stranded on emotionally-stunted island, unable to forge intimate relationships with other men. It's women who are paying the price.

  18. So, I read an excellent essay about #ToxicMasculinity a few years ago. Pretty much, it has to do with #hierarchy (#capitalism / #colonialism) making men feel powerless -- so they bully other men for dominance, and the result is dominating attitudes toward those perceived as lower in status (women, girls, foreigners, etc).

In many ways, it goes way back to #AncientGreece -- pretty much, the only ones who had any rights at all were landowning men who were Greek citizens. And, of course, power, wealth and status dominating over those dominated men. #TheOdyssey and #Odysseus' attitude toward women (other than Penelope), those of lesser status, and foreigners -- was typical of the Achaean male viewpoint.

  35. What the fuck is the problem with men in leadership?
Their ability to ride roughshod over anyone who disagrees with them is mind boggling. That they practice lies, cruelty and greed with such fluency is beyond deeply disturbing.
These are not the actions of males performing acts of masculinity, they are preoccupied egomaniacs. It’s all about me, me, me, me, me, me.

#BarronTrump facing questions if he had ‘any involvement’ with #TateBrothers’ crimes

Alex Woodward, Friday 24 July 2026

    - Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari is urging the House Oversight Committee to investigate the Tate brothers' connections to individuals in the administration's orbit, including Barron Trump.

    - Ansari specifically requested Barron Trump testify about his knowledge or involvement with Andrew and Tristan Tate, who are accused of sexual abuse and trafficking.

    - The manosphere influencers were arrested in Miami following a U.K. extradition request for serious trafficking and sexual abuse allegations, with the White House not expected to block their extradition.

    - But Barron Trump was reportedly a fan of Andrew Tate and spoke to him over Zoom in 2024, according to The New York Times. Donald Trump Jr. also reportedly met Tate at Trump Tower in 2017, and Alina Habba, a former attorney to the president who briefly served as the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey, described herself as a “big fan” during a January 2025 podcast appearance.

    - Ansari is also seeking records from the Department of Justice and State Department regarding communications between U.S., British, and Romanian authorities concerning the Tate brothers' investigation and extradition.
