Not sure what to make of this, and can't see any positives either - #MetPol nicked more people at #Carnival than last year, and although there were at least fewer #stabbings and #violence the amount of creeps and #ToxicMasculinity on the sidelines of this event have give the Old Bill a decent amount of #copaganda they will use to justify #LFR and other #surveillance throughout #London
There's also nothing you can easily compare the event to, its not the same as a #festival that only privileged rich folk can afford as the whole site is (quite rightly) open to the general public throughout the event but I don't think there's anything like it anywhere else in Britain..

You would think someone smart enough to go up to #University would steer clear of dodgy #scams (even if they are a business management student) but not shank his former friend in broad daylight in the street directly outside the University!
Was a 3 grand loss really worth doing 10,5 years in #prison for? (assuming 66,67% early release as it was #manslaughter rather than murder with a minimum tarriff)
Maybe he even calculated that (works out as about 77p per day he sits inside)
Not the first #stabbing amongst Uni students in recent times either, there was once a time when they were less likely to resort to #violence but it seems #ToxicMasculinity has also put paid to that..

There was once a time not so long ago when a #rave event was considered so safe and friendly anywhere in #Europe that even #Police didn't pay much attention to it and turned a blind eye to the amount of #drugs being used as most of the time no one got hurt everyone got home safely until the next time - it seems that thanks to #ToxicMasculinity and #violence those times are now gone..

It's common but not fair to reduce complex geopolitical situations to street beef logic

Worrying aspect of this #crime is offender clearly knows he will get #prison for stabbing someone, and appears to have already researched sentence he would get and still is prepared to commit the offence for just £20 -whilst he's mistakenly picked the highest minimum tarriff for an adult offender committing #murder in public rather than a juvenile (its about 16 years these days), even that wasn't a deterrent.
If he had the #knife since Year 9 that means he has been routinely carrying it and preparing to use if for 2-3 years..
If #ToxicMasculinity isn't addressed in #British society (which needs to start before primary school age!) we are never going to solve the problems with overcrowded #prisons as they will keep filling up with lads like this..

So, I think it wasn't an essay, but two movies I saw in class -- "The Bro Code" and "The Strength to Resist". I'll see if I can find a link to those. In the meantime, here is my student response to the movies that I wrote back in 2017.
"The movie, “The Strength to Resist,” Dr. Gail Dines talks media’s impact on boys and men, and how “men are affected by society’s encoded messages of what it means to be a man” (Strength). However, in the movie, “The Bro Code,” Dr. Thomas Keith describes “Maxim model of manhood” (Bro Code). If a man doesn’t “measure up to Alpha Male, he will put you in your place,” (Bro Code). If one doesn’t measure up to “a tough guy badass” (Bro Code) hypermasculine model, then you’re were either feminized or a “a McLovin” (Bro Code) nerd-type.
The #hypermasculine model puts pressure on boys and men to hide their feelings or be considered weak or feminized, and to act and look a certain way – with an emphasis of being buff and tough. But it is painfully obvious – especially after watching “The Strength to Resist” and the Ms. magazine article – that there is a lot of pressure on girls and women to look a certain way – with boys and men can be brainwashed into judging women by their looks and thinking of them as just “sex objects” (Bro Code).
Gloria Steinem summed it up nicely when she described how that “even ‘real’ non-model women photographed for a woman’s magazine are usually made up, dressed in credited clothes, and retouched out of all reality” (Steinem, 181). Unrealistic expectations hurt everyone, and only by rejecting these standards can we be ourselves, and not media-constructed hyperboles."

So, I read an excellent essay about #ToxicMasculinity a few years ago. Pretty much, it has to do with #hierarchy (#capitalism / #colonialism) making men feel powerless -- so they bully other men for dominance, and the result is dominating attitudes toward those perceived as lower in status (women, girls, foreigners, etc).
In many ways, it goes way back to #AncientGreece -- pretty much, the only ones who had any rights at all were landowning men who were Greek citizens. And, of course, power, wealth and status dominating over those dominated men. #TheOdyssey and #Odysseus' attitude toward women (other than Penelope), those of lesser status, and foreigners -- was typical of the Achaean male viewpoint.
