#Spelljammer fans: which setup for fantasy solar systems do you like better?
The original approach has solar systems contained in crystal spheres, which float in the "phlogiston", a rainbow ocean of explosive yet breathable air. Stars line the inside of the shells.
The latest approach has solar systems as bubbles of wildspace in the Astral Sea. There is no solid shell around them and stars are presumably part of the Astral Sea - perhaps they're the suns of other systems?

I think the original 1989 box set might have worked better if they provided one sample solar system instead of three, gave that system more detail and used it to provide homes, bases and context for the various spacefaring races and factions.
They could also include an undescribed earth-like world as a place-holder for any DM's homebrew campaign world.
Greyspace, Realmspace and Krynnspace could be left to other products.

This is the power of TTRPGs. They do not have to have every possible event covered up front like a videogame does. The world can change because of the player characters, or in spite of them. In a TTRPG, that battle can happen without the player characters being involved. They return to a location and find it has been ravaged by war. In videogames a sandbox is typically an open world with a major questline, some secondary questlines, and various side quests. You have freedom to take things in whatever order you prefer but unless you as the player get involved thing rarely if ever changes. 2/4 #TTRPG #DnD #Spelljammer

I realised a problem with terminology in TTRPGs which comes about because we confuse them with videogames. A few years ago our gaming group started a sandbox D&D campaign which I DM. Our previous campaign was more conventional, but this one offered a big open world (several actually, it is Spelljammer), with events that occurred regardless of the actions of the player characters. Last Week Tonight rebranded a minor baseball team this year to the Moon Mammoths. I immediately thought #Spelljammer needs moon mammoths. Gamma World had the awesome Triphants. Had my first PC death yesterday after 38 session in my spelljammer campaign. I was really really hesitant to do it, but at one point it just happened.
It was cathartic. There were so many emotions. The other PCs pulled out all their tools to try to mitigate it.
Now I'm planning a solo session with the player of that dead PC in the afterlife. It'll be a LOT of fun!
