  1. OK, if anyone knows about this, it's the folks on Mastodon:

way before the #SCP Foundation wiki, before #Warehouse13 TV series, even before #GURPS #Warehouse23 RPG book, there way a file shared on #Usenet detailing various weird, funny, and conspirational objects hidden inside a secret giant government warehouse.

Can anyone share a copy of that file or point me in a direction I could download it?

  4. Five Tiers of RPG Publishing

Hasbro’s annual earnings came out this week, so I took a look. It is truly staggering how much Wizards of the Coast has changed the company since they were acquired; when looking at unadjusted earnings the Wizards of the Coast and Digital Games division was the only one that turned a profit in the entire company. Not only that, but Wizards is responsible for roughly 47% of the entire company’s revenue and over 90% of all revenue growth over the last year. That’s over 2 billion dollars in revenue; roughly $1.7 billion is attributable to Magic: The Gathering and the rest is attributable to Dungeons and Dragons. Dungeons and Dragons is obviously the largest, most popular roleplaying game, but $400 million in revenue is staggering. If this was all books, it would be eight million copies. It’s not all books of course; one of the reasons D&D is growing (though perhaps not as fast as Magic is) is the continued expansion of digital services like D&D Beyond, products with high margins and minimal variable costs. This is the future, not because it makes for a better gaming experience, but because it makes for a better balance sheet. […]

  8. @renegaderich @blackcoat I mean you've gotta keep in mind that in a very real sense, *all* #TTRPGs before #3eDnD (and even 3e to a certain extent) are effectively "indie games" and we understand the concept today.

#TSR was the biggest fish in the pond, but it was still a very small press. So games like Top Secret, Star Frontiers, and Amazing Engine are all effectively indie games.

    #WorldOfDarkness? Indie. #GURPS? Indie. #Warhammer? Indie.

Almost all of those things that we look at as being huge monoliths today started out very very small.

It almost doesn't matter how deep you dig, you're gonna find more weirdness. Rifts was spawned from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and other Strangeness, the official licensed game for the Turtles brand at the time! There's a for-real Rocky and Bullwinkle TTRPG.

If you really want to see the expansive weirdness of the early days of the hobby, check out the #SystemMastery podcast:

  12. New GURPS game inspired by Darkest Dungeon and gothic horror! 250 point human characters, -125 Disadvantages, flawed, dark, compelling. Learn the horrific secrets of Harrow House, and the isolated island that holds the estate.
Gothic horror, Eldritch horror, all played theatre of the mind on Discord. Every other Sunday at 7 PM EST. #ttrpg #gurps #GothicHorror #EldritchHorror

  13. Steve Jackson Games hires a queer, handicapped woman as Lead Game Designer.

Actions speak louder than words in these strange times.

On a side note: I'm expecting good things for #GURPS from this decision.

  15. Talking about #TTRPG 's today I'm reminded of a recent issues I've had with #SteveJacksonGames particularly #GURPS. I've been purchasing phyiscal books for the system since the 90's I have quite the collection of 3e and 4e books and grabbed their #DungeonFantasy set as well. I also picked up their Character creation software as GURPS characters can quickly get very complicated especially with all the calculations needed and how changing one thing can effect everything else.

    Currently running

    • #Pathfinder1e "Curse of the Crimson Throne" remotely for my former players. Not the biggest fan of the system or Paizo's adventure construction, but the setting is fun.
    • #TheDarkEye 5E campaign where the PCs currently are on a mission to save a Viking princess from a curse, but get distracted constantly.
    • #TheDarkEye (using the #ilaris ruleset) retro campaign where we started out playing the baddies (they're just politically persecuted and misunderstood) from an ancient bad adventure and generally wreck the world by assuming every adventure the PCs aren't participating in fails for the "good guy".

    Currently playing

    • Some Inception-like sleeper agent game. Cool story, just hope it doesn't get more railroady. GM wants a story game experience but rules-wise is a bit stuck in the 90s (homebrew WoD/Feng Shui mashup)

    Wish I was playing

    • #GURPS in general, preferably either a Voodoo/Cabal contemporary campaign or hardcore cassette futuristic #Traveller / New Era.
    • A video-gamey #OSR campaign I've been dreaming of, a mixture of Might & Magic, Wizardry and Ultima Underworld.
    • Dreamy but "realistic" portal fantasy stealing from 80s German novels. Using #BRP / #Mythras
    • My own #palladiumRPG mashup: Ninjas & Superspies group is summoned into the Palladium Fantasy setting.
    • #Shadowrun the setting, preferable some other rules, but all with a very Wu Xia mindset.
    • Everquest D20 in the Forgotten Realms.
  18. If you play role playing games and aren't watching the 1ShotAdventures channel on YouTube, you should be.

JC usually does an exhaustive review of adventure modules from various systems and then explains ways to work around any hiccups that he's discovered in play AND, if that weren't enough, gives away resources to make running them easier.

    Great stuff!

Tag 31: Liebstes Rollenspiel aller Zeiten
