Promise: For today, I will share a picture of some RPG dice, my wedding cake. My marriage vows are the central promise of my life. RPGs played a role in our courtship and continue to be a significant part of our relationship. (It’s a good thing we were playing #GURPS back then instead of #Genesys, or the baker would have had a much more challenging job depicting a critical success.)

Some musings on what I like in #ttrpg :
I do like it when player characters get more powerful and competent over time. But the power curve of #DnD and its derivatives is too steep for me - I like it when a campaign has room to breathe.
Thus, some of my favorite RPGs have a middle ground of slow but steady improvement - where the players can pick some minor improvements after each session or two which become impressive over time. #GURPS and #WFRP are some good examples of this style of play - the characters can become very powerful over the course of a long campaign without actually developing into the equivalent of superheroes.
What is your preference when it comes to the power curve in RPGs? -

Discipline: In a #GURPS game, I played Rafe, a street kid who eventually grew into a skilled swordsman working for a baron. My GM surprised me with a very moving knighthood ceremony he'd read about (in the Banestorm book, I believe). Rafe had to demonstrate the self-discipline required to stay awake all night kneeling still on the chapel's stone floor, while friends shared insights and advice. It was an amazing experience for me to hear how Rafe was viewed by all those NPCs.

This is an interesting choice though its size will still look daunting to new players. GURPS has very simple rules but their breadth is enormous. It's not a ruleset per-se but rather a toolkit from which you only extract the bits you need for your campaign. Doing so starting from the full spread of rules is rather daunting (but quite rewarding).

Does anybody want to get into GURPS with physical books?
I have the 4th Edition Basic Set (2 hardcovers, Characters and Campaigns, 575 numbered pages) and the additional volume Fantasy (softcover, 240 numbered pages, also 4th edition)
I'm asking for 10€ for the Basic Set and 5€ for the Fantasy book, plus actual shipping (unless we can meet in Cologne somewhere). Due to shipping it's probably not worth it if you're outside of Europe. -
