In 1861 Utagawa Yoshikazu made this woodblock print of a French photographer, head under the cloth.
Photography went on to take over much of what prints had been for: news pictures, portraits, souvenirs. Meanwhile the cheap prints of Edo ended up in museums, collected by painters like van Gogh.
So: when a new technology makes the old one less necessary, does the old medium become more valuable as art?
