  4. Ransomware response firm CEO accused of data recovery fraud. Prosecutors allege that Florida-based MonsterCloud owner Zohar Pinhasi, 50, claimed to be able to recover encrypted data using a proprietary "recovery tool," without victims have to pay a ransom or even negotiate with attackers. But investigators have accused him of instead typically just paying a ransom, then charging clients up to double (or more) that amount. Prosecutors said he paid $8 million in ransoms but billed victim clients in the United States and Canada a total of $19 million.
