  1. The alarm was five-thirty. The river path was slick with frost. Luna had the pillow.

Every logical argument was against going out. I went anyway.

What kept you going when everything was telling you to stop?

  3. The first time I ran in Swedish winter darkness, I couldn't see ahead.

Streetlights made pools of orange. Beyond that, just darkness. My feet learned to trust what eyes couldn't see.

  8. What a surprise start into the first work week 🤗 cleaning all pipes with a swift pyramid run and some pushes over a longer distance than typically. Streets ice free and thankfully not cold AF. Can absolutely get used to this again 🎉🏃‍♂️💨

  9. Another one in the books. Accompanied by my oldest on bike this time. We got to talk and share thoughs enjoying a moderately cold winter day. Holidays almost over. Make even more memories this year 🫶🏃‍♂️💨

  10. Still reeling from a significant ‘glutening’ in November has meant December has been another tough month. Recovery is a slow, slooow, sloooow process, but #running is a good distraction, and the daily boost of endorphins welcome.

Despite still feeling somewhere between ‘meh’ and ‘ugh,’ I’ve managed a new PB for distance in a single month 🤯 breaking the 150 miles mark for the first time.

    December looked like this:
    Distance: 243km (150.99 miles)
    Longest run: 11.84km (7.36 miles)
    Average run: 9.23km (5.74 miles)
    Average pace: 5:25/km (8:45/mile)
    Fastest km: 4:45/km (7:38/mile)
    VO₂ max: 50.0

  11. There have been some seriously tough kilometres this month — November threw plenty at me: sub-zero temperatures, snow, ice, #StormBert, and #StormConall. A run-in with gluten at the start of the month added to the challenge, with fatigue, nausea, headaches, joint pain and more (thanks, #CoeliacDisease).

At times this meant a gentler pace, a couple of extra rest days, and shorter distances when needed — but I kept going. And that’s the main secret to #running… just…keep…going!

    November looked like this:
    Distance: 229km (142 miles)
    Longest run: 11.72km (7.28 miles)
    Average run: 9.40km (5.84 miles)
    Average pace: 5:16/km (8:29/mile)
    Fastest km: 4:31/km (7:16/mile)
    VO₂ max: 50.0

  12. Suddenly, life has new meaning
    Suddenly, feeling is being
    And you shine inside
and love stills my mind like the sunrise
    Dreaming light of the sunrise
Suddenly, I don't have to be afraid
Suddenly, it all falls into place

  13. Quite a bit of black ice out there this morning. #Running should be interesting. #NewEngland #WinterRunning

  14. Wednesday 11 km ✅ Foggy run. Walked the first 3-ish km then switched over to running - still trying to shake this injury off. I'm two weeks from 500 days, and I think once I hit that target, I'm taking a break to try and rest. Maybe I'll start taking my bike out for a spin then. For context, since Jan 2020, I've run 1100 days of the 1183 (including 363 halfs, 1 marathon, and 7 ultras). #FeelingBroken

  15. Monday 22 km ✅ Figured it was worth a shot at a longer run to see. Generally a good run, lots of folks out getting steps in, with just enough cold rain to be annoying. I think I probably need to take it frustratingly easier for a bit longer.

  16. Monday 11 km ✅ Was supposed to be a half, but the strange pain in my hip got a bit worse as I went along, so I decided to shorten things up. I may dramatically shorten my runs this week. We'll see how this feels tomorrow morning.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #10km

  17. Sunday 10 km ✅ City is clearing snow from our neighbourhood, run was o-k-a-y, my hips are a bit sore (I did kinda skip stretching), cool enough (-22°C windchill) to get that fun-looking ice-beard look. 😜

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  18. Thursday 17 km ✅ Bit crunched for time today, so I trimmed it down a bit. Pretty decent run, all told. Even got groceries done!

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning

  19. Monday 12 km ✅ Good run, even though quite tired. Bit of wind pushed the windchill down to -18°C. Not too many people out today, and I suspect there will be very few out by end of week when it actually gets cold out. 😜

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #WinterRunning #12km

  20. Wednesday 17 km ✅ Had to (sigh) put on pants due to the -18°C windchill, but it was honestly, a good run. When I started out I decided I was going to aim for 15km, and when I finished, I realized I probably could have done the full 21. 🤷

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning

  21. Monday 22 km ✅ Wide mix of conditions from cleared paths, slushy paths, heavy snow paths, and variations in-between. Pretty nice morning for it too.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #21km #HalfMarathon

  22. Friday 24 km ✅ Everything looks beautiful when it's covered in snow. I really feel runs like this in my hips - sloshing through all the snow is *tough*.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #21km #HalfMarathon

  23. Wednesday 16 km ✅ Great to be back on #TeamShorts, even if the conditions were… tough to say the least. Got my steps in, onward with the day.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning

  24. Saturday 11 km ✅ Not too bad of a run even if the route was pretty messy. I'm not a fan of being in direct sunlight, but in this case, the sun helped with the -21°C windchill somewhat. At least everything looks beautiful covered in snow.

Now, if the city could clear the sidewalks as efficiently as they clear the streets, it would be so welcomed for the sections of my runs that are along streets (which end up *on the streets).

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #10km

  25. Friday 22 km ✅ Hit 200km for January on today's slog of a run. Huge dump of snow meant everything was a struggle, even if I love running in snow. At least the -10°C windchill meant I was back on #TeamShorts, even though I also ended up on #TeamBeardIcicle. 😜

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #21km #HalfMarathon

  26. Wednesday 22 km ✅ Me this morning: Hmm. -23°C windchill. I should try to avoid wind.
Me, once outside: picks route with eighteen bridge crossings.

Good run, ankle's still not happy, and the irony of icing my ankle after being out in the cold is not lost on me.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #21km #HalfMarathon

  27. Tuesday 12 km ✅ Ankle's still feels a bit weird, windchill was around -16°C which meant pants, but a beautiful morning for a run. Popped over to Hurdman to see if the two LRT trains were in place (they were) and the overhead catenary wire was repaired. Fresh fallen snow made the uncleared portions of the route easier.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #10km

  28. Monday 22 km ✅ Windchill of -9°C meant I was back on #TeamShorts, which made me happy. Good run, and I got to poke around the Chaudieres Falls area now that construction work changed a bit so I had a clearer view of where I could go. I did something to my left ankle around KM 16 or so, probably crossing the uneven snow/ice boundary. I'll nurse it and see how it goes. Mondays!

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #21km #HalfMarathon

  29. Friday 22 km ✅ Real slog of a run, powdery snow on top of ice in many places, plus seriously distracted by the LRT stuff between Lees and Hurdman (lots of start/stop/walk/looking). Otherwise, the temperature (-6°C) was great and I enjoyed myself (I do seem to enjoy the slogs, truth be told).

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #21km #HalfMarathon

  30. Tuesday 11 km ✅ Good run, even if most of the route is covered with ice and/or snow with an ice crust. Light -4°C windchill. Starting to see some the "regulars" back out now that the holidays are over.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  31. Monday 24 km ✅ Strava crashed 3km in, fortunately my watch kept track. I decided to tack on a few extra KMs to make sure I hit the half-marathon distance. Tough run, probably due to all the junk I ate yesterday. Fortunately, the amount of available junk is rapidly dwindling. My Apple Watch (S5) gave me an award for the half. Curious to find out if that's a one-off or an each-time thing. 😛

  32. Sunday 11 km ✅ Happy 2023, everyone! Bagged my first 10k of the year, starting off with NewShoeDay (Merrell Men's Moab 2 Vent Hiking Shoe), reporting a fire to emergency services (first fire truck arrived within three minutes), and spotting a beautiful holiday decoration that looks like something from the 2018 movie Annihilation on my revised route.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  33. Friday 27 km ✅ Bit of everything, soft snow, ice, slush, puddles, with some drizzle that threatened to turn to rain. Managed fifteen bridge crossings. At least by adding descriptions to the maps I'm learning all the bridge names! 😛

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #HalfMarathon

  34. Thursday 10 km ✅ Another tough, messy run. And don't get me started about off-leash dogs with owners who are unable to control said dogs. <sigh> Weather was perfect with a -7°C windchill. Tomorrow's going to be nuts - and it's supposed to be long run day.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  35. Wednesday 12 km ✅ Today was tough; nearly the entire route was uncleared and/or covered in 8-10cm of fresh, powdery snow. Fun to splash through, and impossible to build up any speed. Very pretty run today, and back in shorts!

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  36. Tuesday 10 km ✅ Bit of a slog today, I regretted not #TeamShorts'ing today even though the windchill to start was around -16°C. Even though the Rideau River hasn't frozen over yet, it feels like winter has finally arrived… except tomorrow it should be 0°C, and climbing higher by week's end. <shrugs>

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning#10km

  37. Monday 23 km ✅ Went for my first distance run with someone else; Jane (who I met at the Summer Institute of Film & Television nearly twenty years ago), joined me for 10km of today's run. We were treated to lots of dogs, a large bird (she says possibly a Merlin or a Copper's Hawk), and lovely large fluffy snow. Fun time and great to catch up with an old friend.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #21km #HalfMarathon

  38. Sunday 5 km ✅ Felt weird to do such a short run (for me), but I figured that today's a holiday, so a holiday-length run was in order. Will have to add some extra KMs later if I want to hit 400 KM for December.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful, safe, and happy holiday wherever you are.

    #Running #RunOttawa #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #WinterRunning

  39. Saturday 11 km ✅ Another tough run with snow shovelling as a warm-up; healthy chunks of my "normal" 10k route was covered in a layer of snow, ice, and more snow, so I got a bit creative. The 48km/hr wind gusts didn't help much either. Got my steps for the day in, going to focus on my hot chocolate now. 😛

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #10km

  40. Friday 10 km ✅ Quite possibly the most challenging run of the year. Started off by shovelling wet snow for over half an hour, then off into the 50 km/hr winds with gusts to 75, w/ heavy, wet snow, and then it started raining. Exhausted.

On the positive side, with this run, I hit my target for the year: 5,000 KMs!

    #Running #RunOttawa #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #TeamShorts #10km

  41. Thursday 22 km ✅ Figured I'd sneak in a long run to avoid long-running in the mess that should be arriving Friday. Good run, lots to see all over the place, and hit my 300 km in December.

The experience in the shower afterwards was funny when the ice in my beard melted out and landed on me.

    #Running #Ottawa #RunEveryDay #NoFoodNoWater #WinterRunning #21km #HalfMarathon

  42. Wednesday 10 km ✅ A really tough run today as I'm recovering from a spot of food poisoning yesterday. Welcomed the shortest day of the year (and winter solstice) by getting my steps in.
