Storm Bert - one year on…
Today is one year since Storm Bert, 24 Nov 2024, when my studio and garage/store flooded. My home was not flooded because its base was built higher above the ground, but the studio was not so fortunate. Many neighbours’ homes were flooded, they had to move out, though most are now back in.
The water rose slowly over hours and then drained in less than an hour at around 11 pm. Something clearly went wrong that night. After pressure, the Environmental Agency has promised a report by the end of this month.
Reinstatement of the studio is not due to begin until January 2026, and dealing with insurers has been exhausting. The disruption, delays, and uncertainty have been overwhelming and at times depressing.
I've posted about some of this but kept most of it to myself, yet today it feels important to acknowledge it. Thank you to everyone who has given support, messages, conversation, or simply understanding.

I'm whispering this, I heard by phone yesterday that there might be some movement on my studio remedial build progress (and maybe the drive) I'm going to keep my excitement reigned in though, until I actually see things start. For sure it's going to be at least nearly a year since the damage was done which is actually nuts. However...

At last, today the Insurer's cleaning company is going to clean down and decontaminate all the pavements, patios, drive etc, 7 weeks after the flood. Just as well it's been so cold, a natural anti - nasty microorganism retardant. #Flood #StormBert

@hanktank61 My neighbourhood was flooded during #StormBert I had flooding in studio and garages and a little underfloor in the house, my neighbours were worse hit and most have had to move out. No clean up done by Insurance company yet, so all the debris that I had managed to get out was blown around by #stormDarragh. It's raining again in South Northamptonshire. Sigh.

I fear that there will be a lot of trees fallen, damaged and felled as a result of #stormDarragh across Wales, Ireland and Western England 😟 😪
all the trees in our garden and that I can see from the house seem to be surviving, which is more than can be said for the pine tree in next next door's garden, which was felled by #stormBert only two weeks ago

This #ClimateRisk map says that #Devon and #Cornwall have relatively low risk. If the damage from #StormBert is "low risk" you'd hate to see what high risk entails.
"More than half (52%) of people polled said their homes weren’t equipped to deal with the impact of flooding or extreme heat, a lesser-known risk that can cause cracking and subsidence. Nearly half of the participants admitted they had never checked if their home insurance would cover extreme heat impacts."

Another mild and wet month, dominated by seemingly endless anticyclonic gloom during the first half.
A cold snap with widespread snowfall on the 21st was followed 2 days later my #StormBert, the strongest winds of the year and temperatures not far short of 20°C! #StormConall quickly followed bringing the second wettest day of the year and severe flooding to much of Southern England.

Big thank you to the Irish Mountain Cardio group for maintaining the tracks and trails at the Hellfire. Today they're clearing the tracks from fallen trees and branches after #StormBert 🌿🙏🌲

There have been some seriously tough kilometres this month — November threw plenty at me: sub-zero temperatures, snow, ice, #StormBert, and #StormConall. A run-in with gluten at the start of the month added to the challenge, with fatigue, nausea, headaches, joint pain and more (thanks, #CoeliacDisease).
At times this meant a gentler pace, a couple of extra rest days, and shorter distances when needed — but I kept going. And that’s the main secret to #running… just…keep…going!
November looked like this:
Distance: 229km (142 miles)
Longest run: 11.72km (7.28 miles)
Average run: 9.40km (5.84 miles)
Average pace: 5:16/km (8:29/mile)
Fastest km: 4:31/km (7:16/mile)

More rain forecast after #StormBert hits UK

November 25, 2024"More rain is due to fall in the coming hours and into Wednesday in southern England and south Wales, where flooding and high winds from Storm Bert have caused major disruption to homes, roads and rail networks.
"At least five people have died in the storm that struck much of the UK over the weekend and prompted criticism about a lack of preparation and insufficient warnings.
"The severe flood warning for the River Nene in Northamptonshire remains in force with a "danger to life and risk of significant disruption", as a holiday park has been submerged for the third time this year.
"Environment Secretary Steve Reed said more flooding was likely this week but it should be 'less severe' than on Sunday."

Popped in to the Natural History Museum in #Oxford to get away from #StormBert this weekend and was taken by Angela Palmer's basketwork sculptures "The Deadly Six" relating to six dangerous pathogens and the vaccines developed against them by the Oxford Vaccine Group.
Here, receding from us, are Malaria, Typhoid, Coronavirus, Pneumococcus.
Unseen because it is behind us is Ebola which looks a bit like a giant dog poo. Beyond the Pneumococcus in the distance may just be seen the Meningococcus.
An emotive piece of work, catching the eye, drawing us in, informing us, all in a fabulous setting. The place (though not this shot) was thronging with young families.

Interesting titbit from a friend whose cottage was flooded (many in the village suffered). The 4x4 rescuers said they couldn't go through any water higher than their knees (I think she said it was because of the gear they had on ) She pointed out that the water was higher than most people's knees.. #Flood #Rescue #StormBert #weather

Warning, unsolicited advice incoming! One thing I've leaned from the studio flood is wellies are useless (that sensation of cold dirty water filling your boots is not recommended. I think in flood preparation kits you definitely need waders. My new studio fashion look will possibly involve waders....

What a start to #NationalTreeWeek ! #StormBert has fatally damaged a number of trees in our copse, and taken the ladder (pictured) with it.
The ladder is dead, long live the ladder.
(Our copse is therefore off-limits till the council can come and take down all the broken trees.)
