Mikaela Davis and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad at the Rochester Lilac Festival.
Great night of local-bred talent. Good enough even that it was worth braving windy and uncomfortably cold weather (WTF Spring?!) Davis played the entire new album backed by her old bandmates plus John Lee Shannon on guitar and a solid sit-in from Alan Murphy on keys.
Always reliably fun Panda set to open the night with Kurt Johnson sitting in on a set-closing New Speedway Boogie.

This week, the #RochesterNY #LilacFestival is in full swing. This year, the lilacs bloomed right on schedule, and the weather is crisp and springlike. My own little front yard lilac bush has joined the festivities by bursting into blossom. It's running rather wild, taller than the roof of the house, loaded with blooms reaching for the sky, and smelling wonderful.

The front yard lilac bush is making encouraging progress towards blossoms. Our #RochesterNY Lilac Festival begins May 8th, and it looks as though my own home lilac is on schedule to bloom in sync with the ones in Highland Park.

#RoseWindow in a former church, now the #Swillburger restaurant in #RochesterNY. There is now balcony seating, and the window is at eye level over a table. It’s not every day you get stained glass at your table in a burger/gaming joint.

Currently 3°F in #RochesterNY with a wind chill of about -20°F. Light lake effect snow, not more than an inch or two accumulation, but blowing and drifting. The zoo where I work has closed for the day due to the cold, so I've got the day off. I'm hunkering down for a quiet afternoon, with a warm blanket and relaxing music and a library book and some hot coffee, listening to the wind whistling around the house.

Gonna do something I don't often do and recommend an album I think several people here might like by KITCHEN from Rochester, it's folky, guitarry, usually chill, this guy is a VERY good songwriter, guitarist, and lyricist- this is just too chill for me, for the most part. (Wish the whole thing was fuzzy rock like track 8.) But try it out - I'm tagging a couple of you (or maybe you're already familiar with it).

It has come to my attention that today is National Lighthouse Day. This calls for a bit of celebration!
One of my LibriVox audiobook projects was recording "Instructions to Light Keepers", an instruction manual for lighthouse staff written in 1881. With this little booklet in hand, a keeper could learn how to do anything, from keeping the lights burning to keeping the supply inventory in order.
Some sections are admittedly a bit dry and technical. If you want a good picture of the general duties of a light keeper's day, without getting too deeply into the details, try Section 1 "General Instructions to Light Keepers" and Section 4 "Instructions to Keepers of Light Ships". That's just a half-hour of the most interesting material.

In Rochester, NY, today's May 1st rally took place downtown from 5pm to 7pm. A large crowd gathered in Austin Steward Plaza, and listened to several speakers from 5pm to 6pm. Then we set out to march through downtown. It began to rain just as the march began, and a number of people left at that point. But still about half of the original crowd remained, and we marched about a mile in the rain, down Main Street and East Avenue to Gibbs Street, where we paused to listen to more speakers, and then continued on Main Street, to finish up at Parcel 5 at about 7pm.
I carried a two-sided sign, both sides shown in the the first photos attached. The other two photos show the intrepid folks who stayed throughout the rain.
