  5. A federal court judge has dismissed a case brought by the Trump administration against the city of #RochesterNY over its sanctuary status with prejudice, meaning the White House can't refile the same claim.

On Tuesday, Judge Frank Geraci ruled that the Department of Justice had failed to state a valid claim against the city.

“Once again, grandstanding of the Trump Administration has been found to be without any legal legitimacy,” Mayor Malik Evans said in a statement...

The DOJ ... alleged the city's policy to not aid or cooperate with federal immigration enforcement violated the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution ... and that the law obstructed federal immigration policy.

Geraci, in his decision, rejected all of those claims.

"Rochester’s Sanctuary City laws and policies are not a prohibition on or interference with the federal government’s role in enforcing immigration policy," he wrote. "Instead, they simply recognize the different functions of each governmental body. ... Sanctuary City laws and policies only dictate that Rochester Police Department and other Rochester employees cannot participate in civil immigration enforcement," he continued. "As such, they do not dictate how the federal government must act and therefore do not violate the intergovernmental immunity doctrine."

..."Lake Ontario is going to be Lake Ontario, just as the city of Rochester is going to be a sanctuary city," Melendez said...

  10. On July 5th 1852, exactly 174 years ago today, Frederick Douglass gave a speech at Corinthian Hall here in #RochesterNY, at a gathering of the Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society. His words were blunt and honest, pointing out the hypocrisy about the laudable ideals of liberty and justice promised in the Declaration of Independence. He forced his audience to confront the truth, that the high-minded assertion that "all men are created equal", was NOT actually being extended to all.

The speech is known under the title "What to the American Slave is Your Fourth of July?" It is well worth reading again now, on this July 5th.

Here's the complete text of the speech, as published in a pamphlet at the time:

And here are some central excerpts from the speech, read by some of Douglass's descendants:

Here I was today in only an outlying suburb, of only a minor city, and the #NoKings turn out was huge

Selected #posters I captured today in the below thread. I had to cap it at 25 posts:

  12. Some local #WinterOlympics #WinterOlympics2026 news from #WesternNY, #RochesterNY

The #USA #WomensHockey team is currently undefeated

5 of its 23 players are from a high school in #Rochester #NewYork

Including #LailaEdwards, the first black woman to play #US #Olympics #Hockey. She just scored a goal against #Canada. In fact 3 of the 5 goals in the win over Canada were by #women from this one high school (sorry Canada)

  14. I managed to get coverage at work today, so I could attend one of the No Kings rallies. Here in the Rochester NY area, there were five rallies at different locations around the county. I attended the one in the town of Irondequoit, which was billed as an "Un-Parade". People lined up for about a mile along Lakeshore Boulevard, which runs along the shore of Lake Ontario.

People were in good spirits, waving home-made signs and U.S. flags. Passing vehicles mostly honked, waved, smiled, gave a thumbs-up, or waved flags of their own. I only saw about a dozen rude drivers who gave us the finger. Seeing how many drivers were cheering the event was very encouraging.

For me, the highlight was a musician who walked along the route playing "This Land Is Your Land" on a guitar and harmonica. Lots of people sang along.

When I got home, I checked to see whether any of our local news outlets had covered the events. I was pleased to see fairly good coverage from the local paper, the Democrat & Chronicle. According to the article, "thousands" of people attended the Irondequoit event, though it doesn't specify exactly how many thousands.

    Here's the D&C article:

Also, a couple of pictures I took, and the Irondequoit portion of the article in a screenshot.
