    Created by Yuji Horii, and inspired by #RPG games such as Wizardry & Ultima. #Manga artist and #DragonBall creator Akira Toriyama produced the artwork and Koichi Sugiyama composed the music.

    Dragon Quest has been credited with establishing the basic template for subsequent Japanese console RPGs.

    While writing this post I discovered the #ChornobylNotChernobyl hashtag from which I learnt "Chornobyl (Чорнобиль) is the correct Ukrainian spelling and transliteration, which is increasingly adopted to reflect Ukrainian identity and decolonize place names. Chernobyl (Чернобыль) is the Russian spelling, which was standard internationally during the Soviet era and remains common in Western media."

    He contributed to the development of the #internet in the 1970s. He co-invented #Ethernet co-founded 3Com, and formulated Metcalfe's law, which describes the effect of a #telecommunications network.

    He has received various awards, the IEEE Medal of Honor and National Medal of Technology and Innovation. In 2023, he received the Turing Award, the highest distinction in computer science.

    It is credited with defining the survival #horror genre and with returning zombies to popular culture. It established many conventions seen in other survival horror games, including the inventory system, save system, and use of a vitals-monitoring system instead of a health counter.

    It is often cited as one of the greatest and most influential video games ever made.

    It was one of the first computers available that used the 6502 cpu. An expansion included a #BASIC interpreter, greatly lowering the entry cost for home computing.

    Am 23. Februar 1730 erscheint die erste Ausgabe der «Donnstags-Nachrichten von Zürich». Darin finden sich 14 Inserate: eine Wohnungssuche, Verkaufsanzeigen – und sogar eine Bibliothek, die verlorene Bücher zurückfordert (Bild 2).

    Dieser erste Kleinanzeiger Zürichs ging im 19. Jahrhundert im «Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich» auf, das noch heute fortbesteht.

  18. #TodayInHistory 1986 - In Japan, #Nintendo releases the Disk System for the #Famicom It's a 128kB disk drive, disks can be rewritten with new games at special vending machines. Price of the Disk System is about US$100.

    The Legend of #Zelda was a launch title.

    Sales ended in 1993, selling 4.4m units. Nintendo maintained Disk writing services by mail until 2003, and provided technical support until 2007.

  21. #TodayInHistory 1946 – ENIAC, the first electronic general-purpose #Computer is formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

    It was Turing-complete and able to solve "a large class of numerical problems" through #programming

    having cost $487,000 (equivalent to $7,000,000 in 2024), and called a "Giant Brain" by the press. It had a speed on the order of one thousand times faster than that of electro-mechanical machines.

    Deep Blue became the first machine to win a chess game against a reigning world champion under regular time controls. However, Kasparov won three and drew two of the following five games, beating Deep Blue by 4–2 at the close of the match.
