My job requires me periodically to be able to send an HDMI signal great distances, so I ordered a nice set of balun devices and a 250-foot coil of Cat-6 Ethernet cable. For years, I've just kept this cable rolled up in a box. WHY did I never think to pick up one of these spools instead? Even has awesome little flanges on the side so I don't have to unroll the entire length to be able to connect one side to my computer.

I should have taken a photo for a mastodon post, but:
TIL never leave a PoE Ethernet cable connected if it's possibly going to be exposed to moisture or a solvent, &etc
Unlike the rest of low voltage Ethernet, the differential between the two 48VAC pins for PoE is enough to cause arcing and even works great with a solution to nicely oxidize the connector pins.
I removed my PoE cameras and taped off the connectors to get our house painted, but I didn't disconnect the switch. As a result, all the connectors have black marks around two of the pins and the pins are bright green.
Thankfully I was able to resuscitate them with some contact cleaner and a pen knife. Now they're reconnected (and coated in No 4 dielectric grease) and up and running again, but that was quite the hassle for a minute.

I had a good go at trying to crimp my own RJ45 connector earlier but am admitting defeat in aligning the bastard wires with the sodding pins, and contacting the computer repair shop in the village to outsource my gritted teeth. #Ethernet
ps this is not a cry for help

Сейчас же практически никто им не пользуется, а модемы отдаются за бесценок, потому что они уже никому не нужны. И вот, спустя много лет, я решил попробовать сделать то, чего до меня практически никто не делал: раздобыть то самое оборудование, которое стояло у провайдера, запустить его и, наконец, поднять свою собственную домашнюю сеть и увидеть всё это в работе. Именно этим мы сейчас и займёмся. Заодно узнаем, как работает ADSL, а также вспомним, каким было посещение интернета в те годы и через какое оборудование мы тогда выходили в сеть.
