A quotation from Theodore Roosevelt

And as for a life deliberately devoted to pleasure as an end — why, the greatest happiness is the happiness that comes as a by-product of striving to do what must be done, even though sorrow is met in the doing.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer; US President (1901–09)
Autobiography, ch. 9 “Outdoors and Indoors” (1913)

A quotation from Propertius

And should I fail, my courage brings its commendation:
greatness aimed at is enough.

Laus erit: in magnis et voluisse sat est.]

Elegies, Book 2, Elegy 10, l. 5ff (2.10.5-6) [tr. Holcombe (2009)]

THE END OF SOMEWHERE ELSE

There are lives built around striving, escape, improvement, and the hope that somewhere else will finally feel right.

And there are lives in which very little is required.

The work is simple.

Breathe.

Write.

Care for the house.

Care for the people and creatures who share it.

Let other adults live their own lives.

Keep warm in winter.

Pay attention to what is already enough.

“I need do nothing” does not mean neglect.

It means life no longer has to be forced.

Things are cared for.

Responsibilities are shared.

No one needs rescuing.

No future needs arranging.

And home is not a place to escape from.

It is the place where escape is no longer necessary.

A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

Far better it is to dare mighty things, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Speech (1899-04-10), “The Strenuous Life,” Hamilton Club, Chicago

A quotation from Samuel Johnson

To strive with difficulties, and to conquer them, is the highest human felicity; the next is, to strive, and deserve to conquer: but he whose life has passed without a contest, and who can boast neither success nor merit, can survey himself only as a useless filler of existence; and if he is content with his own character, must owe his satisfaction to insensibility.

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) English writer, lexicographer, critic
Essay (1753-11-27), The Adventurer, No. 111
