  1. Eight eyes, zero chill. Spotted this fuzzy jumping spider (Salticidae) in Biebrza National Park, Poland, striking the perfect pose on a curled leaf. Nature's tiniest, most curious hunter.

  2. Another Ant Mimic Jumping Spider and another Asian Weaver Ant which it mimics. This is the female jumping spider. Under normal lighting, their color matches very closely too.

  3. This cutie had better hop off, I thought. Coaxing it off the car, and it hopped onto my phone, then on to the door. 🙄

  4. Hello, I am a spider. Will you be my friend?

    😀

I photographed this little guy on the weekend in Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, NZ. It's an Australian Bronze Hopper, Helpis minitabunda. Introduced accidentally to NZ, it now occurs throughout the North Island and upper to middle South Island.

This species is unusual amongst spiders in that the male is larger than the female.

  5. #Arachtober 31: handsome little ice cream sandwich boi (male _Hentzia palmarum_ jumping spider) spotted back in August.

Damn, posting every day feels like way more work than it should. Anyway back to slightly less frequent arachnid posts tomorrow…

  6. It's still #Arachtober 24 somewhere: a tiny, curious zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). It even gave me a little head tilt. WARNING: very high levels of cute

  7. #Arachtober 14: The gaps between the wooden snow fence and the metal posts are ideal homes for jumping spiders and sac spiders! I found several bold jumping spiders (_Phidippus audax_) this way. High Park, Toronto.

  8. #Arachtober 10: happy #InternationalJumpingSpiderDay! Here is one of my favourite species, the peppered jumper _Pelegrina galathea_, seen recently. I find the females' patterns so mesmerizing. This one is brown but they can also be just black and white.

While I've found them in all manner of places, I've found that tansy flower heads are a good place to look for them. They like to make little silk retreats under the dense canopy of flowers.

  9. #Arachtober 7: can't go wrong with a classic, the photogenic bold jumping spider (_Phidippus audax_). In my experience they are shy at first, but if you take a little extra time and are patient, they become curious and friendly.

  10. I haven't been taking my camera out much this year so I don't even have enough spider photos for each day of October from the past year? Crazy. Anyway, have a cute little jumper!

  11. Let's kick off #Arachtober with some fall colours! This beautiful coppery jumping spider—_Eris rufa_, maybe, or _Pelegrina_?—reminded me of autumn leaves. Tried to get an even closer pic of its iridescent scales.

  12. An _Attulus fasciger_ jumping spider I met yesterday. I like the green shine of their eyes and their soft-looking palps.

  13. Peanut Butter (that's what I've decided to call the _Platycryptus undatus_ who lives down the street) nabbed herself a female ant alate! I also saw more female alates in other spiders' webs, and a few that had gotten into the grocery store somehow.

Northeastern North Americans/ant people in general: anyone know which ants' nuptial flight time it is? Those yellow _Lasius_ maybe? The males (in my window orbweaver's web) seem yellow.

  14. What a beautiful paper :D Hurni-Cranston, T. & Hill, D. E. (2021). Three new jumping spiders of the genus Cosmophasis from Wallacea (Araneae: Salticidae: Chrysillini). Peckhamia 228.1: 1-84. #cosmophasis #salticidae #spiders #biodiversity

  15. CW: Jumping spider feeding, totally Renfield mode

The female _P. undatus_ was out today! She looked thin to me so I resolved to get her a fly, as I was catching a few anyway for my window orbweaver. The only problem is that at home, I put the flies in the refrigerator which temporarily knocks them out, and I also have tweezers to hold them. Awake, totally-able-to-fly flies are a different story!

When I showed her a fly in a container she locked on right away, and tried to pounce on it. Opening the little plastic container a crack did not work, as jumping spiders' hunting method is to pounce on prey from a distance, not grabbing it through a small opening. If I opened it further, the fly simply wriggled out and flew away. What worked was carefully opening the container and putting it over her while the fly was at the non-open end. She quickly caught the fly and I took away the container so she could retire with her prize.

  16. Yesterday I went to the big No Frills to get peanut butter as it was on sale, but it was sold out. In the evening I was like, let's try the No Frills near me. As I was passing a concrete pillar just down the street, I saw a surprisingly large jumping spider, the same pale grey as the concrete, cautiously emerging from a crack!

I had found a _Platycryptus undatus_ before, but a male one (they have reddish faces), which I guess must be much smaller. This one was as big as a bold jumper!

A common name is "tan jumping spider", but they are not necessarily tan-coloured, as you can see.

P.S. The other store did have the peanut butter.
