  1. #Arachtober 21: I have noticed that young leaf-curling sac spiders (_Clubiona_) have a daring way of catching prey: they leap at it and throw themselves off whatever surface they are on, and hang in the air from their silk dragline, spinning around with their catch. Here is one that bagged a green midge (family Chironomidae).

  2. Last night went out for a good bug ramble except I realized I forgot my light, so I went home and made do with my phone flash along the way. (OpenCamera has a torch flash mode where the flash is always on.)

    - _Leptinotarsa_ potato beetles mating
    - a huge _Clubiona_ leaf-curling sac spider eating a zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_)
    - an ant war (_Tetramorium_?), this was only one of two large patches, with skirmishes up and down the sidewalk
    - a *huge* sawfly larva? of some kind

  3. #DailySpiderPic: night spiders!

A couple big _Larinioides_; a silky _Clubiona_ leaf-curling sac spider; and a running crab spider.

Most of the spiders out and about now were born last year and overwintered. They are reaping a plentiful bounty of midges (family Chironomidae), which have begun to emerge.

  4. found another pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (family Clubionidae)!

The bubble-like thing in the first picture is the haematodocha, a sac in the male's palpal bulb that inflates to change the orientation/shape of the pedipalp to allow it to lock in to the female's convoluted genital opening.

  5. Here's a short clip of the haematodocha deflating and inflating, using the hydraulic pressure of haemolymph (arthropod "blood"). Uh, NSFW unless you're an arachnologist I guess

  6. A pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (_Clubiona_) from last night!

The male is reaching his left pedipalp underneath the female to transfer sperm to the corresponding reproductive opening (she has one on each side). The pale balloon-like structure visible in the last photo is one of the haematodochae on the pedipalp. The haematodocha is an inflatable sac or membrane that rotates various bits of the palpal bulb so it can kind of lock in. Video in next post.

  7. #Arachtober 27: have I done a _Clubiona_ yet this month? These sleek, stealthy spiders, about a centimetre long, can be found prowling around after dark. The ones I see range in colour from fawn to dark red-brown, and the chelicerae are always dark.

  8. #DailySpiderPic × #bloomscrolling: when night falls, the spiders come out. A silky-looking leaf-curling sac spider (family Clubionidae) prowls stealthily across a pink petunia in a decorative planter.
