  1. Some arachnids from today:

    - young _Mangora_ orbweaver
    - _Naphrys pulex_ (I think?), considering some kind of hymenopteran
    - and most excitingly, Trombidiidae that aren't _Allothrombium_! I'm not quite sure whether they're both _Trombidium_, the first one is oddly not velvety at all but more rough-textured, and more flat than plump, like Smarididae if it were trombidiid-shaped. I am going to upload the pics to BugGuide to see what the experts say.

  8. Have got back from a long-postponed outing to forage for seeds and berries for guerrilla native plant gardening! Goldenrod, milkweed, Virginia creeper, staghorn sumac, brown-eyed Susans, etc. I saw two cottontail rabbits and a few black-capped chickadees. Plus, this small orbweaver (_Zygiella_) nestled in a staghorn sumac (_Rhus typhina_) bob.

  9. #Arachtober 31: handsome little ice cream sandwich boi (male _Hentzia palmarum_ jumping spider) spotted back in August.

Damn, posting every day feels like way more work than it should. Anyway back to slightly less frequent arachnid posts tomorrow…

  10. #Arachtober 30: a lovely female hacklemesh weaver (_Amaurobius cf. ferox_) out in the open one night, rare for them. They spend most of their time in crevices in retreats of fuzzy back-combed silk that extends some way outside, letting them sense prey passing too close. People typically encounter the mature males that go wandering in search of mates and inadvertently end up inside.

The family is closely related to the funnel-weavers (family Agelenidae).

  11. #Arachtober 29: didn't have time for a proper spider outing, so hopped over the garden wall to see what I could find in the yard—and almost walked right through this cross orbweaver's web strung between the dead coneflowers and columbines! As you can hopefully see in the close-up, her jaws are full of a big lump of mushed-up bugs.

  12. #Arachtober 27: late October, we're getting frost warnings, but the orbweavers just keep on trucking. Taken just a few hours ago on a grocery run; the supermarket's large windows attract a lot of midges and are great scaffolds for the ubiquitous _Larinioides_ orbweavers.

    #ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Araneidae

  13. It's still #Arachtober 24 somewhere: a tiny, curious zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). It even gave me a little head tilt. WARNING: very high levels of cute

  14. #Arachtober 22: a hobo spider, _Eratigena agrestis_ (I believe), found in a big willow tree down by the lake. These European spiders are imports to the Pacific Northwest but there are a few isolated populations elsewhere, like here in Toronto. I always get a kick out of seeing them.

Contrary to popular North American belief, they are not medically significant. They are close relatives of the native, equally harmless, and far more abundant grass spiders (genus _Agelenopsis_) and make the same flat webs with funnel-like retreats.

    #ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Agelenidae

  15. #Arachtober 19: for spooky season, here's a couple of ghost spiders (family Anyphaenidae)! The first is an adult, possibly the mother of the tiny one in the second photo. They resemble sac spiders like _Clubiona_ and _Cheiracanthium_ but with distinct patterns of markings, and as you can see they make similar silk hammock retreats, here under the leaves of a _Silphium_ cup plant.

    #ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #GhostSpider #GhostSpiders #Araneae #Anyphaenidae

  16. #Arachtober 18: an Eastern parson spider (_Herpyllus ecclesiasticus_), a stealthy and fast-moving active hunter, feeding on a male _Zygiella_ missing-sector orbweaver. (This was right behind a female's web.) You can see the distinctive "knees" of the male's pedipalps in focus in the second picture.

    #ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #SpiderBehaviour #Araneae #Gnaphosidae #Araneidae

  17. #Arachtober 15: it's _Zygiella_ courtship season! The males hang around the edges of the females' webs, plucking and strumming rhythmically to communicate. Here's a male with his long "elbowed" pedipalps; a female; and a cobweb spider preying on an unlucky male suitor who got too close.

    #ArthroBeauty #spiders #Araneae #Araneidae #Theridiidae

  18. #Arachtober 14: The gaps between the wooden snow fence and the metal posts are ideal homes for jumping spiders and sac spiders! I found several bold jumping spiders (_Phidippus audax_) this way. High Park, Toronto.

    #ArthroBeauty #JumpingSpiders #spiders #Araneae #Salticidae

  19. #Arachtober 12: a small yellow sac spider (_Cheiracanthium_) perches on a fence post and releases a stream of silk strands that are separated and carried aloft by the breeze and (as we've learned in recent years) atmospheric static electricity. If the silk catches on something, the spider can use it to bridge a long gap. Smaller spiders can be borne aloft entirely and traverse long distances, a behaviour called ballooning.

  20. #Arachtober 11: a little thin-legged wolf spider (_Pardosa_) on a blade of grass in a marshy meadow. They can be practically as jumpy as jumping spiders and are very hard to get close enough to to photograph.

    #ArthroBeauty #WolfSpiders #spiders #Araneae #Lycosidae

  21. #Arachtober 10: happy #InternationalJumpingSpiderDay! Here is one of my favourite species, the peppered jumper _Pelegrina galathea_, seen recently. I find the females' patterns so mesmerizing. This one is brown but they can also be just black and white.

While I've found them in all manner of places, I've found that tansy flower heads are a good place to look for them. They like to make little silk retreats under the dense canopy of flowers.

  22. gotta stay on brand

here's a sidewalk mite (_Balaustium_) feeding on some predatory mite, Rhagidiidae or Cunaxidae or thereabouts; and an _Admestina_ jumping spider I found near pine trees in a nearby park. I find such interesting arthropods around pines that I don't see anywhere else.

  24. I was just poking around the garden today in a spare moment and had two unexpected arachnid discoveries!!

    1. A hackled orbweaver (_Uloborus glomosus_), one of the very few venomless spiders, that also makes orb webs with a fuzzy, glueless silk not often used for aerial webs—I rarely come across them and never, I think, in my own garden.

    2. A new kind of pseudoscorpion—not the tiny yellowish cthoniids I'm used to, but a HUGE beast with sturdy claws, like 3mm long! I think it's family Chernetidae.

  25. I almost forgot it was #MiteMonday! Inspired by @zorbama's shot of a running crab spider, clover mite, and midge all together (veganism.social/@zorbama/11437), here's a running crab spider (_Philodromus_) I found feeding on a clover mite (_Bryobia_). I don't actually often find many arthropods feeding on the adults, though I've seen predatory _Anystis_ mites eating the eggs.

  30. #Arachtober 23: from June, a long-legged velvet mite (family Erythraeidae) climbs into a silk retreat over the exuvia (molted exoskeleton) of the jumping spider (family Salticidae) that previously occupied it. This is not the first time I have seen mites using old spider retreats for shelter!

  31. New digs for Sabella the black widow! Larger jar (56 oz./1656 mL), plus a wide piece of bark to hide behind, coco coir and clay pebble substrate, and cork dots for anchor points. She was easily coaxed into the new jar with a paintbrush. Now I just have to leave her alone for a while until she gets a web set up.

You can't see it, but the lid has window screen glued to the inside, for ventilation.

  32. After several days of refusing food and staying in the same position at the top of her jar, Sabella molted! This is her second molt in my care.

I gave her water, but will wait for a few days for her new exoskeleton to harden before feeding her more.

  33. Got a fresh container of fruit flies and fed several to Sabella. She frantically flew back and forth in her web wrapping them up and dragging them to a central spot, although she often tugged on the web with such eagerness that the flies fell out and escaped.

  34. #BREAKING: Sabella the black widow molted!!

When I checked in on her earlier today I had a feeling she might, something about the way she was hanging in her web, but honestly mostly hopeful imagination. After a grocery trip and dinner I came back and noticed something else in the web—her old exoskeleton!!

I was going to feed her today but I'll hold off for a day or two to let her new exoskeleton harden up more.

  37. An unexpected spotting. IDed as a Singapore Frontdoor Tarantula (Phlogiellus inermis), seen resting on a leaf next to the path at one-north Park: Fusionpolis South, Singapore, on 21 Nov 2023. These spiders are usually nocturnal, so seeing one in daylight is unusual.
