We get them big at home too, but I reckon the golden orb weavers/tiger spiders/Trichonephila plumipes get a bit bigger up here in Brisbane.
Both of these are females, but in the first photo there is also a male above the female in her web. The males are much, much smaller.

Small progress on this #drawing WIP. I'm still severely struggling against a bug, and my throat has started feeling sore.
I don't need tonsil-free tonsilitis again. Last time that happened, it caused breathing issues.
But at least I've made a little step forward with this.

So, in a prior post I talked about Claudia the bold jumper, that was also gravid and has had at least two clutches of eggs since we had been spoiling her with mealworms. She's in a more controlled diet, because that many grandbabies are difficult to handle. Plus she's fond of snacking on them.
Claudia is currently in a "retirement" enclosure with netting along all the sides and more accessible ledges as she doesn't have the best grip in old age.
Pictured are shells from a recent molt of one of the slings from Claudia clutch 1. Being able to have an intact helmet as they molt to i5 is delightful because look at how cool it is!
Also pictured is the spood before the molt, and then a different spood that we affectionately call "Little Miss can't pick a fucking name" because it was funny at the time. She hitchhiked on my person one day a month or so ago, and is currently habitating in Claudias previous enclosure.

She'd been in her hammock for a couple of weeks and we figured she's probably molting. Well, she didn't molt. And now I guess I'm a grandparent? While I may be barren, my spoods are clearly not so. And now I know she's gravid so this won't be the last batch either.
Also, despite the looming silhouette vibe going in this picture, Claudia is rather timid. She's still got just the 7 legs and I hope she can regrow it some when she eventually molts.

#DailySpiderPic: a sleek-coated Eastern parson spider (_Herpyllus ecclesiasticus_, in the ground spider family Gnaphosidae) on a big willow tree. These spiders are lightning-fast. I typically spot them while quickly waving my phone flashlight over tree trunks—then I know I have one more chance to get a photo, and need to hurriedly get everything into position before turning on the light. I usually only get one or two shots, then they're gone.

#DailySpiderPic: "Well, this is awkward…" An ant-mimic jumping spider (_Synageles_) crosses paths with a _Prenolepis imparis_ ant. Its disguise is meant to put off potential predators that won't mess with ants—but the ants themselves rely more on chemical cues and aren't fooled. I saw a couple of _Synageles_ on this planter and they both carefully avoided the ants.

A pair of mating leaf-curling sac spiders (_Clubiona_) from last night!
The male is reaching his left pedipalp underneath the female to transfer sperm to the corresponding reproductive opening (she has one on each side). The pale balloon-like structure visible in the last photo is one of the haematodochae on the pedipalp. The haematodocha is an inflatable sac or membrane that rotates various bits of the palpal bulb so it can kind of lock in. Video in next post.

I grabbed a large male midge from a wall nearby—they're still swarming—and slowly waved it in front of the hole. A surprisingly large bold jumping spider (_Phidippus audax_) emerged, seized it from my fingers, and went back in. Then she turned around and sat as before, with her head just out of the hole, eating the midge. (2/2)

I almost forgot it was #MiteMonday! Inspired by @zorbama's shot of a running crab spider, clover mite, and midge all together (https://veganism.social/@zorbama/114373000260983349), here's a running crab spider (_Philodromus_) I found feeding on a clover mite (_Bryobia_). I don't actually often find many arthropods feeding on the adults, though I've seen predatory _Anystis_ mites eating the eggs.

Both my current spiders (cobweb spider and cellar spider) molted this week!
OK, so you know how instead of gradually turning rust-red like iron does, copper turns from, well, copper to light blueish-green, and how copper compounds will turn a flame blue-green? Well, arthropod hemolymph (their equivalent of blood) uses copper-containing proteins to transport oxygen, and so spider "blood" is blueish-green—like how our iron-rich blood is red.
You usually can't see it, but right after molting this spider is unusually translucent (the exoskeleton is still hardening up) and the legs still have a distinct blue-green hue.

Got quite the shock just now when I saw my pet _Parasteatoda_ had made an egg sac!!
She has molted since I caught her, so it's not fertilized, she just made it on her own initiative. I didn't think she was full grown! I'm just very surprised. Uh…happy Valentine's Day?
